SLU Unveils First Strategic Plan SLU BULLETIN VOLUME 1I, ISSUE 1— MARCH, 2017 ...the official news publication of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa has unveiled its First Strategic Plan, which covers the span of five years, 2016-2020. The unveiling was conducted by the Visitor to the University and Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, MON, mni, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Higher and Adult Educaon, Alhaji Ibrahim Ismaila (Jarman Ringim) dur- ing the Matriculaon Ceremony for 2016/2017 undergraduates of the University. In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Pro- fessor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu disclosed that the Strategic Plan is a road map for the structured and orderly development of the University. He described it as a markeng document that will pro- vide informaon about the Mission, Vision, Goals and Corporate Strategies of the University to the four key stakeholders, namely: the Government of Jigawa State; local and foreign donor partner/ funding agencies; staff and students of the University and the general public, especially the indigenes of Jigawa State. Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa has unveiled its First Strategic Plan, which covers the span of five years, 2016-2020. The Vice-Chancellor Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu has reiterated the Institution’s guiding principle to appoint staff based on merit. He made this indication during Quarterly Meeting of the Honourable Commissioner, Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST), Hajiya Rabi’a Husaini Adamu Eshak with Heads of Tertiary Institution held on Thursday 9th March, 2017 at the University’s Senate Chamber. The Vice-Chancellor said this was to ensure quality in teaching, research and administrative running of the University.

He added that the Appointments and Promo-tions Committee (A&PC), in pursuance of the directives of the University Governing Council, had conducted recruitment interview for Twenty (20) applicants sourced to fill various senior academic positions in the Departments of the University. The interview was conducted on 12th February, 2017 where thirteen candi-dates turned up for the interview including one candidate from Malaysia who was interviewed via Skype. Three candidates were recommend-ed for appointment as senior lecturers.

In her comments, the Honourable Commis-sioner, MOEST, Hajiya Rabi’a Husaini Adamu

Eshak, commended the Management of the University for hosting the Quarterly Meeting and assured the University of the total Commitment of the Ministry to the development of the University. She then requested for collaboration between the University and the Ministry in the recruit-ment of teachers across Jigawa State sec-ondary schools. The meeting was organised to forge syner-

gy between the Six Tertiary Institutions in

the state for the attainment of the goals set

by the Jigawa State Government for the Ed-

ucation Sector. The meeting was attended

by Permanent Secretary Ministry of Educa-

tion, Science and Technology, Alhaji Abdul-

lahi Hudu, all Heads of the Six Tertiary Insti-

tutions in the state namely: Sule Lamido

University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State Poly-

technic, Dutse, Jigawa State College of Edu-

cation, Gumel, Binyaminu Usman Polytech-

nic, Hadejia, Jigawa State College of Legal

and Islamic Studies, Ringim and Jigawa

State Institute of Information Technology

and the principal officers of SLU.

SLU MOVES TO EASE BUS SHUTTLE HICCUPS IN THE UNIVERSITY

Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa (SLU) is to partner with Kafin Hausa Branch of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to compliment the University Bus Shuttle Ser-vice. The Acting Chairman of the University Bus Shuttle Committee Malam Musbahu Ada-mu, disclosed this to SLU Bulletin.

Malam Adamu said the committee, at its 10th meeting held on Thursday 16th March, 2017 had invited the Kafin Hausa Branch of NURTW to discuss modalities on how to forge a part-nership with the Union’s members to provide commercial bus shuttle service for staff and students in addition to the already existing bus shuttle service provided by the University.

The sum of One Billion, Nine Million, Four Hundred and Ten Thousand Naira (N1,009,410,000.00) only has been allocated to Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa (SLU) as TETFund 2016 Intervention. This was dis-closed by the Vice-Chancellor of the Univer-sity Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu during the Meeting of Heads of State Owned Ter-tiary Institutions with the Honourable Com-missioner, Jigawa State Ministry of Educa-tion, Science and Technology, Hajiya Rabi’a Hussaini Adamu Eshak at the University’s Senate Chamber on 9th March, 2017.

Professor Ribadu said TETFund had, on 20th of February, 2017 during a meeting with Heads of Tertiary Institutions nationwide, dis-tributed letters of allocation for 2016 Normal Intervention under which each of the forty (40) Federal Universities and thirty four (34) State Universities received the said sum.

The Vice-Chancellor added that in its effort to ensure prudence and transparency, TET-Fund had introduced Project Defence by beneficiary Tertiary Institutions to fast-track the implementation of intervention projects and eliminate accumulation of unutilised funds.

INTERVENTION GRANT TO SLU The Department of Biological Sciences of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa (SLU) is to partner with Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands Project in areas of research, training and community service. This was contained in a Field Trip Report submitted to the Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Rib-adu, by the Acting Head, Department of Bio-logical Sciences of the University, Dr. Umar Adamu Ahmad following a Three-Day Field Trip to the Wetlands by staff and students on Field Course, which is part of the require-ments for the award of B.Sc. Biology.

Narrating the success recorded, the Acting Head disclosed that through the Field Trip there was an increase in learning interaction between members of staff and students of the Department as well as an increase in practical knowledge on the application of biological equipment in the field. According to Dr Ahmad, both staff and students con-cerned were exposed to bio-diversity of the natural environment where samples of or-ganisms in their natural habitat were collect-ed for further studies in the laboratory.

SLU REJOICES BIRTH OF QUADRUPLETS WITH THE HOST COMMUNITY

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Management of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa had on 28th February 2017 visited Abdallawa Community to rejoice with the Family of Mallam Miko Abdallawa who was blessed with quadruplets.

Although one of quadruplets had passed away few days after their birth, the three children were presented to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu

in the presence of Bulaman Abdallawa Alhaji Haruna Magaji.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that the gesture was part of the SLU’s contribu-tion to a member of the host Communi-ty. He then prayed for good health for the children and their mother. Responding, the representative of the family, who was the grandfather of the children, Malam Garba Gambo Abdalla-wa, expressed the profound appreciation of his family for the gesture and prayed for the overall development of the Uni-

versity and wished the University leadership Allah’s guidance.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sule Lamido Univer-sity, Kafin Hausa Professor Lawan Sani Taura, is to chair Jigawa State Technical Committee on Re-cruitment Interview for Teachers in Jigawa State. Prof Taura was nominated during the Quarterly Meeting of the Honourable Commissioner, Min-istry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST), Hajiya Rabi’a Hussaini Adamu Eshak with the Heads of Tertiary Institutions on Thurs-day 9th March, 2017 at SLU’s Senate Chamber.

The Committee was mandated to arrange and conduct a recruitment aptitude test for the Min-istry of Education, Science and Technology.

the Six Tertiary Institutions in the state.

In his speech, the Governor expressed his administration’s satisfaction over the modest achieve-

ments recorded in the University which he attributed to the dedication and selflessness exhibited

by the leadership of the University.

This, according to the Visitor was making positive impact on the policy formulation and imple-

mentation in the Education Sector of the state. The Visitor indicated that it is a vindication of

such commitment by the University leadership that resulted to the election of the Vice-

Chancellor of the University as the Secretary General of the Association of West African Universi-

ties (AWAU) in October, 2016 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
