Be a reader (Bear)The Be A Reader program is a literacy project that has been helping 2nd grade children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 13 years. Currently the BEAR program is serving eight schools with over 70 program participants. BEAR volunteers go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality; one on one time with a child that has been identified by their teacher. The time spent with the child is about learning to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers the children five books to keep and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact Michelle Grimsley, BEAR Coordinator, at 321-2303 or [email protected] to mentor a child or make a donation.
