For this task we were required to research variousaudio-visual projects and analyse their audio. Aterexploring various works we decided to ocus onthree distinctive projects, Resonance, the openingsequence o American Horror Story 2 and thetrailer o the movie Safe. Resonance is a projectthat explores the relationship between geometryand audio in unique ways. The perect combinationo abstract 3D visuals and audio were very inspiringor our project. The opening sequence o American

Horror Story 2 made use o many short diversesounds which were ully synchronised with thevisuals in quite a unique way. Its contrasting audiogives the eeling o a sound through a silent visual. The experimental ootage and its quick transitionsgive the sound designer the opportunity to combinemany dierent sounds with individual shots. In thetrailer o the movie Sae the mood changes quite

requently hence keeping the viewer interested inevery scene. The sound is used in an eective wayboth to build up suspense and during calmer shots.Contrary to the other works, this trailer containsvarious melodic pieces throughout. With the help o these three audio-visual projects wemanaged to combine elements rom all o them andproduce our own unique piece o work.

This unit was very challenging orme since I never had the opportunityto produce a complete audio-visual

    project o this sort.

Throughout this unit I learnt howsuch project are created and howsound can be edited in order toproduce synchronised audio andvisuals. We all worked very well as Igroup and I eel that we have come a

long way in this unit since none o usknew how to edit sound and how tosync it with the ootage we had.

Although everyone had a dierentrole we all worked together as agroup. We lmed the shots and therecorded the sound together and

everyone pitched in the ideas bothduring the creation o the storyboardand even while we were on location. Ieel that this project was a successulcollaborative project and we are verysatised with the nal outcome.

Starting this module I had literallyno idea how sound design works.I was always aectionate at so

many diverse projects Ive lookedat over the internet that consistedo abstract visuals with perectlysynced audio. Never really had thechance to try and create somethingo my own, not to mention that I hadno knowledge whatsoever to whatdigital audio workstation to use.

Through this module Ive learned howsound eects can be manipulatedin so many creative ways so as toproduce beautiully audio designwhich can than be easily combinedwith dierent visuals.

In the beginning it was quite dicult

to adapt to this module as none ous had no idea rom were to start, however as we got used to it westraight away started working on ourproject, were each and everyone ous had an very vital part to the group.

The Sound Design & Productionmodule was quite un andchallenging. It was completely

dierent rom the other modulesweve learnt so ar. Beore thismodule was ready, I had no ideahow sound design and productioncould be carried out, nor had anyknowledge about digital audioworkstations. By means o usingAvid Protools, through several

experiments on recorded sounds, raw sounds where given a new ormand use, which then could be addedto the nal experimental audio-visual. Together with my other teammates, we planned a step by stepstructure, where work was dividedamongst us our. Planning consisted

o the selection o loctions o lming, props, cast and most important thesounds that needed to be recorded. We all did our best and since we allhad the same style o audio-visualsin mind, we all worked well togethertowards one aim and all the team isullled with Sigarett u Bukket Fjuri

During our HND course last year,I got very excited when we weretold that we will be having a Sound

Design and Production unit in theDegree course. Anything related tovideography is what I like doing most, and in any type o video, sound is asimportant as the visuals.

During this unit I have become moreamiliar with the dierent sound

elements, eects and equipmentand now I nd mysel going deeperinto the music/sounds that I listento and analyse their build up, and Ibelieve that this has helped me a reallot or the sound development o ourproject.

I eel that us as a group, all o usbeing very green in the sounddepartment, have managed todevelop our idea or the audio-visualproject into a good one. I enjoyedworking on this project with the teamand hopeully together we will workon something similar in the nearuture.

We started o by exploring dierenttechniques that could have beenhelpul or both the visuals and

sound recording. Being an audio-visual project we kept in mind thatthe combination o the audio had tobe perectly synced and versatile tobe easily mastered. We all agreedon an experimental style o visualsand quick transitions, thereore weneeded a large amount o dierent

shots to work with. The earlyidea was to create visuals usingliquids however this was urtherdeveloped into sequential shotso various elements in dierentenvironments. The storyboard wasdrawn to incorporate the dierentobjects that were going to be used.Locations were chosen to blend withthe atmosphere we wanted to createwith the audio used.

The rst location chosen or lmingwas St.Pauls Bays playground.Beore the actual lming and soundrecording took place, we visitedthe location to make sure that thearea was appropriate or what we

had in mind. Then we restructuredthe storyboard and added somemore shots which were applicable. We also listed some more soundeects which could be created in theplayground environment. The nextday we went or the actual lming, taking all the equipment needed.

We rst took the shots and thencontinued by recording the dierentsound eects according to theootage taken. A particular soundwhich had to be very prominent inour video, that o the swing, could notbe recorded through the swing itsel

due to a huge amount o backgroundnoise and also because the soundproduced by the swing was o a lowamplitude. Hence the sound eectrecorded was that o a squeakinggate. Other sound eects wererecorded using combination o thingsor example knocking on a woodendoor and hitting a metal board.

During the making o, o this project,we all took dierent roles, Racheland Rowena were lming, sincethey had the appropriate cameras todo so while Graziella and Noeleenwhere taking care o the props andsetting the scene accordingly. It wasa collaborative task to record thesound needed, with one or two o ushelping in the making o it, and the

others taking care o the recordingitsel. Sometimes this had to berepeated since in some recordingsthe background noise was veryprominent and it was interering toomuch with the main sound.

The second part o theootage were takenin an old townhouse. The rst lming wasdone in the kitchen; thewhistling kettle and therying egg shots. theshot o the kettle was

a little bit challengingsince we had to positionourselves correctlyin order to avoidrefections. The audiohad to be taken at adierent time or thesame reason.

We then moved on to lm thetelephone shots. We managed to

take a lot o dierent shots thatwhere linearly combined. Theseshots were later combined withthe abstract ootage to acquire acontrasting mood. The dailing soundwas recorded on location whilethe whispering melodic sound thatwill be heard rom the phone, was

recorded later. To extend the samegloomy ambience we also decidedto include a part o the horror lmNoseratu. From this lm we decidedto use a shot o Noseratus shadowand a shot o creepy spiders. Thenwe reconstructed our version o bothshots with the same basic elements.

In the last secondswe adopted a calmer enviroment tomove away rom the chaotic soundsand visuals so to help in diminishingall the eects till the ending.

discussion we chose to lm acigarette and a bouquet o fowersin the very last part o the projectwhich will help the viewer tovisualise the title in the end.
