THE MANAWATU MOTEL ASSOCIATIONThe Manawatu Motel Association (MMA) is an independent amalgamation of like minded motels in the greater Manawatu region.

Brought together by a common goal the strength of the Association is in its ability and desire to provide a common standard of comfortable accommodation for all travellers alike.

Whether the motel be self rated, two, three or more stars ‘a can do’ value for money approach is adopted by all members.

Bound by a strong Code of Ethics and utilising a modern high tech booking system all members work together to ensure a “home away from home” living experience.

When in the Manawatu stay with a member of the MMA and be assured of a welcoming and pleasant stay.

From the mountains to the sea, across valleys and plains, Palmerston North City and the Manawatu district has much to offer.

Throughout the Manawatu are villages and towns based around thriving rural communities that offer options to explore world-leading gardens, museums and adventure activity.

Palmerston North is a compact University city offering great parks, extensive shopping, excellent dining, exciting sports events and a thriving arts and theatre community.

We’re a young, highly educated and innovative city with plenty of opportunities for all ages.

The Manawatu is strong in agribusiness, horticulture and food processing. Palmerston North is a world-leader in food science, research and tertiary education. We are home to New Zealand’s main army and airforce bases, and we are fast becoming a national logistics and distribution hub.

There is much to do, so take your time to explore and enjoy your stay.

Nga mihi nui,

Palmerston North City Mayor Grant Smith and Manawatu District Mayor Margaret Kouvelis

Palmerston NorthThe city of Palmerston North is home to 88,000 people and Massey University. Blessed by many picturesque parks including the National Rose Gardens situated in the Victoria Esplanade; it also boasts a miniature railway.

A national wildlife rehabilitation and visitor education facility is proposed for the Victoria Esplanade and nearby is the Lido Aquatic Centre that has New Zealand’s largest superbowl waterslide.

The jewel in the crown of the central city is The Square; it is a beautiful and expansive setting. Take your time to read some of the stories on our statues and street art to get a feel for who we are.

During the day you can visit Te Manawa our regional museum of Art, Science and History, the New Zealand Rugby Museum and our innovative City Library is regarded as a world leader.

At night you will find an array of restaurants and entertainment options such as theatre and music.

Ambience with cosiness and comfort are the norm in Palmerston North restaurants and cafes. In abundance and so apparent is the wealth of ingredients being used as enriched culinary delights are created.

If one thing characterises the Manawatu when it comes

to food it’s variety. The fertile region produces quality beef and lamb as well as horticultural products to a very high standard of excellence.

It isn’t surprising that the wonderful arrangement of harvested food coming from the paddock to the kitchen table tastes great.

Perhaps with the quality so prominent in the food chain, it may well have parallels as to how the Manawatu region constantly churns out top athletes to elite champion status. Food for thought.

REGENT ON BROADWAYDesigned in 1929 by Charles Hollingshed of Melbourne, the Regent Theatre officially opened its doors to the general public on 4 July, 1930. A newspaper report at the time described the theatre as having “been built, decorated and furnished regardless of cost” and called it “The Theatre Beautiful” and goes on, “Creating an entirely new standard of Entertainment, the Luxurious Regent will become the Mecca of all Devotees of the Magic Talking Screen because of its Compelling Worth and Regal Magnificence.”

Te Manawa Museum

OF ART SCIENCE AND HISTORY

Page 39: Showcase Manawatu 2015

Publishing World Ltd 37

The story of settlement in Manawatu-, the life cycle of the Sun and photography by local school students - once upon a time these things would not have been seen within a mile of each other.

That’s what makes Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History special. As a museum without boundaries, it offers an experience like no other. Breaking down traditional museum barriers, it is a space where diverse communities can mingle, dance and collaborate on bringing new ideas to fruition.

Te Manawa is a unique destination, a custodian of important collections of Taonga Ma-ori, contemporary art, and social and natural history. It takes pride in fostering ground-breaking science and cultural initiatives.

Every day Te Manawa demolishes the old perception of museums as dusty places filled with old things gathered by moustachioed

colonial explorers or excitable zoologists in pith helmets. Here visitors can step into history and participate in its stories, or immerse themselves in the science that makes our everyday world tick.

An ever-changing calendar of events and exhibitions explores the past, provides information for the present and asks questions about the future. Art, science and history collide in inspiring and surprising ways.

Te Manawa embraces its place in the global community of museums and, in addition to fostering the growth of local talent and New Zealand artists, hosts celebrated international exhibitions. It is one of only two national museums to host National Geographic’s 50 Greatest Photographs in 2015 and will bring Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s distinctive and stunning personal collection of photographs to New Zealand in 2016.

Some visitors may even remember Da Vinci’s Machines, Roman chariots, tarantulas and giant mechanical insects that have passed through over the years. Motorcycles Unleashed was a tremendously popular exhibition that brought together rare motorcycles and the people who ride them, and exemplified the way Te Manawa creates appeal across the cultural spectrum. The 2015-2016 Summer brings a racing exhibition and collaboration between Palmerston North’s Robertson Holden International Speedway.

Many of its extensive stock of touring exhibitions are high-calibre science interactives exploring themes of sound, light, colour and the human body. The addition of ‘Sunlight – Ihi Ko-maru’, designed and built on-site over two years, brings a new level of ambition and commitment to engaging local, national and international audiences.

‘Sunlight’ has broken new ground in presenting science to a diverse audience and brings new life to the story of sunlight through interactive games, challenges and dynamic multimedia. It is the first Te Manawa-developed touring show to be completely bi-lingual in both English and Te Reo Ma-ori – making it a uniquely Kiwi experience. Following its inaugural season in Palmerston North, it will tour New Plymouth, Rotorua and other venues.

Te Manawa’s semi-permanent exhibitions have a strong Manawatu- focus. Te Awa – The River, follows the Manawatu- River from its source high in the ranges, through the city to the sea. Te Rangi Whenua shares the stories of iwi groups in Manawatu-, Rangitīkei and Horowhenua regions, and Manawatu- Journeys follows the region’s development from settlement to the present day. All have free entry.

Page 41: Showcase Manawatu 2015

It is also home to Palmerston North’s historic Santa’s Cave. A seasonal landmark for nearly a century, Santa’s Cave is a kitsch romp through the North Pole as imagined by model-makers and craftsmen for generations. It moved to its permanent place at Te Manawa after relocation of the Farmers Department Store to the Plaza, and continues to delight and amuse locals and visitors alike in December each year.

If Te Manawa exhibitions represent the mind, it is people who are its heart. In the spaces between exhibitions, Te Manawa’s community engagement and learning programmes draw people in, connect them with each other and celebrate our collective mana. It could be a weaving demonstration, a model-making workshop, or a lace-making session. It could be children and their caregivers experiencing the tactile, activity-laden space of Kids TM. Every day, people can join in and have their horizons expanded. All are welcome.

Visitors even have the rare chance to see the Museum animated after dark through community performance, winter Shakespeare or ‘Nightlight’ events popular with the whole family. A partnership with Centrepoint Theatre, the only professional theatre outside the main centres, opens the back-of-house as ‘The Dark Room’ for a “black box” theatre experience. New life and energy is continually being added to the complex’s eclectic spaces.

They’re spaces to make your own. Te Manawa is one of Palmerston North’s most stimulating and attractive venues. With modern, well-equipped and comfortable facilities, conference and function guests can enrich their stay and discover an exciting new museum experience located in the cultural heart of the city. Its facilities can cater anything from small functions to hosting nearly 200 people.

The Te Manawa shop stocks a range of gift items including books, cards, local art and educational toys and puzzles. You can also pick up New Zealand rugby merchandise (supporting the New

Zealand Rugby Museum) or even score a piece of a former exhibition. Take the time to browse and find something a little different.

Challenge yourself! Come to Te Manawa and feel the fascinating tug of history, the inspiring breath of art and the electrifying processes of science. Nau mai, haere mai! You will be most welcome.

Te Manawa Museum of Art Science and History is open daily from 10am – 5pm (closed Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day). Free General Admission, charges may apply to some exhibitions.

Rugby Museum

THE NEW ZEALAND

When a museum receives a rugby boot with instructions that it “never be cleaned”, it must be some pretty special dirt. In fact it’s a special boot: that of legendary All Black Don Clarke, complete with its Lancaster Park mud. It’s one of many unique and precious memorabilia items collected and cared for by the New Zealand Rugby Museum.

The New Zealand Rugby Museum’s collection is rich and diverse, and represents the evolution over many years of our nation’s favourite game. It’s not just a rugby enthusiast’s treasure trove; it’s a place the whole family can get a kick out of.

For those wanting to learn about the history of New Zealand rugby and know some early All Black stories, the displays create a timeline that you can follow from the birth of the game to the present. The museum’s collection of artefacts helps tell the tale - things like the walking stick of Charles Monro, ‘father of New Zealand rugby’. Old film from as far back as 1905 lets visitors see the rugby of yesteryear as their parents and grandparents saw it.

The museum mixes history with high-energy activity. Visitors can measure their speed and tackling skill against local legends Aaron Smith and Aaron Cruden, or see if their kicking boot can measure up to Andrew Mehrtens. Those who want to experience life in the front row can pack down like Keven Mealamu and Charlie Faumuina against the scrum machine. The current record holder is an international rugby prop from Georgia who managed an incredible 498kg.

The big screen plays rugby highlights all day, and can be customised to display games from whatever era is desired. Fancy some Christian Cullen? Or how about some of the mighty Buck Shelford? Visitors need only ask and staff will make it happen.

Don’t leave empty-handed. Thousands of visitors from all over the world have had their photograph taken in front of the gigantic Haka wall, with the All Blacks in the background. Other souvenirs are available in the gift shop.

The game’s at the heart of our culture and history, and the New Zealand Rugby Museum keeps it beating.

The New Zealand Rugby Museum presents a unique WW1 commemorative exhibition that tackles the story of wartime rugby.

In popular memory, rugby players during the Great War were heroes, athletes turned soldiers, making noble sacrifices for the “greater game” of war as they traded the cheers of spectators for the roar of artillery fire. This interactive, multimedia-based exhibition explores the impact of the harsh reality of war on colonial sportsmen as they were transplanted from the rugby fields of home to fight overseas for the “mother country”.

Trace 15 Kiwi rugby players and a coach as they represented their country on and off the battlefields of WW1.

The life stories featured in the exhibition and accompanying e-book aim to encapsulate the range of wartime experiences Kiwis 100 years ago would have had, with their love of rugby the common denominator in their selection for the “exhibition XV”.

Meet a pioneering woman coach, three pre-war All Blacks and three post-war All Blacks, a schoolboy rugby player-cum-soldier and a rugby-mad military defaulter; rugby players who served in the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and New Zealand Tunnelling Company; and three New Zealand Ma-ori players and a highly decorated VC winner who had a stellar pre-war provincial rugby career.

Follow their journey from rugby field to battlefield and back again.

BALLS, BULLETS & BOOTS – FROM RUGBY FIELD TO BATTLEFIELD

The exhibition is open at Te Manawa from 22 August until 11 November 2015. After that it goes on a national tour, stopping at the National Army Museum in Waiouru from November until February 2016 and the Rotorua Museum from February until April.
