My passion for architecture could only be described in love terms. It’s little exaggeration, if any, to say I was born with this passion. Since I was a little child, any architectural item worthy of the name gripped my imagination, stimulated me to apply my pen and ruler to paper and sketch out all kinds of houses, buildings and bridges that impressed all those around me as shown in (Fig 1.2), I kept cultivating this passion through all my school stages, only to be lucky enough to make it to architecture for my college

studies. At first sight it seemed as if i found the Holy Grail, but college was actually another stimulus that ever more excited my passion. Upon graduation I applied myself to field architecture where i spent a considerable amount of time and had a career that spanned a broad range of disciplines, including architectural design, interior design, freehand and sketching, digital modeling. And here where I’m, a postgraduate architect, but forever a student, hence I’m looking forward with ever greater passion for the next step. Figure 1.1 • My photo when I was 16 years old.

I was only six years old when I first put pen to paper to sketch a house (Fig 1.6), I was destined never to lay down that pen again. I soon began to draw pictures of houses of all shapes and sizes. It had become my dream that, one day, I would live in a house of my own design. It ingrained itself all the more deeply onto my psyche because the urge to draw was such an anomaly in my life as illustrated in (Fig 1.3), There was no one among my family and close friends who was an architect. It was only due to the encouragement of

my dear father, who had never had the chance to complete his own education, that I kept on perfecting my craft, and doing my hobby/sketching every where and on every tool (Fig 1.4).

In 1999, at the age of nine, I drew my favorite sketch of all time (Fig 1.6), In my mind, I pictured a home at the edge of a small raging river. I picked up a pencil and did not put it down until the proportions looked perfect. Little did I realize that 17 years later as shown in (Fig 1.5), this drawing would become the inspiration for my first ever fully realized vision.

During my stint as an architect working at the Darin Group, one of Iraq’s largest companies, I was afforded a unique opportunity to create a design proposal for the Darin Head Office Building. A main feature of this design proposal is the distinctive of the building which has influenced the way it was conceived. Comprising a 30-story vertical tower along with a 10-story horizontal base, The building publicly accessible entertainment facilities

The concept derives its inspiration principally from the historically well known Khanzad Palace see (Fig 2.4), a celebrated archaeological site that represents a shining item of Kurdish architectural heritage. Hence, the building is more or less a contemporary version of the ancient palace, with a number of striking similarities, such as the site of the hotel, as it perches on a hill just as does the ancient palace, as well as its geographical proximity to it, so much the ancient palace serves as a delicious view for the hotel. Most conspicuously,

The Concept

Page 21: Sherwan Mzuri Portfolio

the design of the hotel is strongly inspired by that of the Khanzad palace, with a series of alterations having been made to confer on the hotel a modern design on the one hand, and to give a historical hint about the ancient palace on the other hand. The old palace as we notice is a square- shaped building with four supporting cylinders, it lies freely on a hill, having views

from all its four sides, while our hotel suspends, as it were, from the breast of a hill, thus due to the geographical nature of its site, we were forced to remove two cylinders and confer a rectangular shape on the building with some curvature to add further to its frontal view and to fit well into the site. However, the cylinders have the most obvious historical implications.

This five-star hotel is an ambitious entrepreneurial project, located in Pirmam, a resort that lies about 40 kilometers north of Erbil/Iraqi Kurdistan. The launching of this project is well in keeping with the region's thriving economy and animating tourism, that has long placed enormous demands on the region in terms of accommodation and entertainment facilities. The site of the hotel, that's Pirmam resort, has not been chosen without good reasons, as it's a popular and fascinating tourist magnet. The hotel, which embedded in the breast of a hill, is a sixteen- story building. The

upper twelve floors are devoted for accommodation, having two typical floor plans; A and B, with every single room having a downhill view overlooking a breathtaking natural scenery. The accommodation segment provides rooms with a variety of qualifications, including standard, presidential, superior and honeymooning rooms. In the ground and first floors occur the public facilities, which include two ball rooms, four restaurants tow of which are special with VIP dining rooms being built on them, a lobby bar, three coffee shops and several other shops. In addition to a business wing consisting of a two

conference halls and two meeting halls. In the basement occur the main kitchen, the laundry, the storage, the employees' room and the maintenance department, that's mechanical and electrical areas. The minus two floor, which also has a frontal downhill view, consists of entertainment facilities, including a spa with sauna, steam baths, as well as multiple sports facilities such as a gym, a body-building hall and a swimming pool. The hotel also has a few appendixes such as an outdoor swimming pool, a spacious green area and a helipad.

The building of a government

in Erbil city. It is a curious blend

of both modern architecture and

classical architecture of the city.

The glassy part is the modern

element in the building, while

the brick flanks with its special

architecture after the fashion of

some buildings preserved in a

The idea behind designing (Erbil Academic Research Center) building is inspired by the tension between modernity and identity. Identity usually takes us back to our traditional culture and the way our grandparents lived. Composed of solid houses with solid brick walls, traditional housing was mainly inward looking. This contrasts sharply with modern designs in contemporary architecture. A lot

has changed. Modern concepts in general are, spacious, light-drenched and accessible to the public. With this design, I aimed to resolve the tension by integrating several elements into one, In this case, the main concrete box-like structure represents identity, solid and strong. Modernity is expressed through the concept of a glass box, which is fixed on and supported by the concrete.

OIL STATION SERVICES CAR WASHING

The idea behind this project is to construct a simple modern gas station on every highway in Kurdistan in northern Iraq. The

goal is to provide facilities such as restaurants, cafeterias and car washes as illustrated below to people using these highways. The

structural design is built with steel and concrete that was combined together. Electricity is provided by using solar power.

5 STARHOTEL & SPA

StatusProposal

The design of this five star hotel is a classic example of the Art Deco style, Although the relative thinness of the columns clearly alludes to these modern structural methods, the material finish visually hearkens to an older method of masonry construction

This playful deployment of historical quotation explicitly contradicted moder imperatives and heralded the mainstream arrival of an approach to design defined instead by a search for architectural meaning.

on an enormous scale. As with all architecture in the postmodern tradition of the “decorated shed,” the superficiality of this sign age not only fails to detract from its effectiveness but reflects a deliberate privatization of architecture’s affective capacity.

From the stylish guest-rooms, studios and lofts to the more dramatic public areas and day spa, natural materials in neutral color tones provide warmth and texture while vibrant shots of color, accessories and upholsteries, create drama and excitement, While the Hotel Tower is designed to emerge from the ground, the Banquet Hall is designed to be more embedded in the landscape. Composed of three floors and a rooftop pavilion, the building has a crisp angular shape. Its Porte-coherer leads into a grand, two store lobby with a wraparound deck. Floors below the lobby contain a restaurant with views of the beach and a spa that opens up to dense vegetation.
