Sharing God’s Word amidst conflict and cholera in South Sudan
Six months into a bi-er ethnic conflict, which is tearing South Sudan apart, more
than a million people have fled their homes.
Many are sheltering in UN camps but others, like those shown here, are crowding into
school compounds and have li-le or no help. The Bible Society is providing them with bags
of food, blankets and Scriptures.
Refugees and Bible Society staff praying together before unloading
the aid and Scriptures from the truck.
Unloading aid material from the truck.
Some of the sacks of maize and beans provided by the Bible Society, thanks to donaFons from the American Bible
Society and the Bible Society in England and Wales. Some of the tents that the refugees are living in are
visible in the background.
Bearing each other’s burdens: two refugee women carry a sack of maize flour.
Dinka pastor, Rev Rebecca Abuk, fled the fighFng in Bor and walked more
than 200km to the capital, Juba. She is sheltering in a school compound with many others, and leads the Sunday services they hold. Here she holds a
Dinka Bor New Testament, provided by the Bible Society.
These women were very happy to get Scriptures along with aid materials. Some requested English Bibles, while others asked for the Scriptures in their
mother tongue, Dinka.
These refugees are also sheltering in Juba, outside the protecFon of the UN camps. The woman on the right was shot in the hand as she fled the fighFng in her
village. The man in the middle is carrying a Proclaimer, which allows them to listen to the Bible. They told the
Bible Society that it brings them comfort.
The arrival of the rainy season, normally eagerly awaited, is helping to spread cholera and bringing
even more misery to those sheltering in overcrowded camps.
We praise God for his protecFon over us in these difficult Fmes. Please join us in praying for peace, an end to the cholera outbreak, and for more opportuniFes to
share God’s Word across our troubled, divided naFon.
Thank you.
In the midst of the challenges, the Bible Society is conFnuing its work of making the Bible’s message available to those who need
it most, through Bible translaFon, distribuFon and trauma healing workshops.
