SMART Goals ...
SMART Goals• Specific
– Straightforward, focus on what you want to happen.
– Clearly define what you are going to do• What – use action words• Why – why do you want it to happen• How – how will you accomplish it (by…)
• Measurable– If you can’t measure it you can’t manage it.– Set milestones so you can see progress.– Set concrete criteria for what success looks
like.
SMART Goals• Achievable
– A goal needs to stretch you.• If it is too far out of reach you will never truly
commit to it.• Breaking goals down to smaller chunks
helps.• Realistic
– Not a synonym for “easy”– Learning curve is not a vertical curve.– Must be able to devise an action plan
around achieving the goal.
SMART Goals• Timeline
– Gives you a clear target to work toward.
– Without a timeline, you may never start.
– No urgency, let yourself off the hook.
– Must be measurable.

The 7 "Musts" for Goal Achieving
Balance Your Goals To Balance Your Life• Develop goals in six areas of life:
Relationship(s) SpiritualContributionFinancialHealthBusiness
By pursuing goals in each area, you will create a more balanced and integrated life.
Aim high • Shoot For The Stars
– if you miss you'll still be on the moon.• Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone.
– Make your goals slightly unreasonable; in other words, don't allow your (perceived) limitations to get in the way. Don’t allow your old conditioning to stop you from going after what you really want.
The 7 "Musts" for Goal AchievingWrite Out Goals In Detail.• Just the act of writing down goals sets
the process in motion, so be specific. – Instead of “A new home”– "A 5,000-square-foot rambler on five acres of
lakefront property with vaulted ceilings, 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a private boat dock."
– The more information you include, the more probable the final result will be.
Make Your Goals Consistent With Your Values.
• Most people don’t do what they value first and therefore find themselves stressed and out of alignment. – Create a list of your highest values and then
create your goals around them. – This will give you a sense of being on purpose
consistently.
•
The 7 "Musts" for Goal AchievingEvery Goal Must Have Two Things:
– a detailed plan to achieve it – the right beliefs and mindset – You can kiss your goals goodbye without these two
items. So, what do you have to believe and what can you start to do immediately to move you towards your goals and dreams?
Review Goals Daily. • This is an important part of achieving success
and must become routine. – Review your list of goals each morning when you
wake up. Visualize your completed goals and how your life looks and feels as a result. Each night before you go to bed, repeat the process. This is a great way to train your brain to expect your goals to materialize.
The 7 "Musts" for Goal Achieving• Don't Get Discouraged.
– You will either achieve your goal or the insight into whatever is in the way to its achievement.
• This is not a setback; rather, it is part of your forward progress. Stay focused on what you want to achieve and you will find ways to solve difficulties or break through barriers.
– Celebrate every success and contextualize your accomplishments within the framework of your goals.
• Before you know it, you'll have to make a whole new list for "next level achievement!"
Setting Goals EffectivelySet priorities
When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.
Share Your Goals With People Who Are Important To You – If you are certain your significant others will support
the accomplishment of your goals, share them. – Your manager is likely to support your goal
accomplishment as your success is their success.– Honestly assess the ability of family members,
peers and friends to provide support. – If you don’t believe you will have whole-hearted
support, keep the goals to yourself.
Setting Goals Effectively Are there specific obstacles you are
experiencing which are interfering with your ability to accomplish the goal? – In this case, make action plans to remove the
obstacles or seek help from your coach/mentor. – If you are not making progress on a particular goal,
attempt to do a root cause analysis to determine why.
– Only by honestly analyzing your lack of progress can you determine steps to take to change this picture.
– In this era of the hand-held computer and PDA cell phones, picture your goals automatically forwarding for 365 days.
– Talk about a daily reminder about failure!
