Membership has its privilegesMembership has its privileges… what

an incredible catchy tagline from american express. Many of you reading this article are already members of various clubs, organizations or (dare i say it) your Milton chamber of commerce. Some of you though may not be a member; instead you’re reading our newsletter in a reception area, found it in a coffee shop or are thinking about becoming a member of the chamber and received a copy from our team.

if you’re already a member at the Chamber, can you name five benefits you’re receiving? How about two? if not, you’re not alone – i’m sure there’s someone out there who only uses the caa when their car breaks down they need a tow. Not everyone would have joined because of expert auto advice or discounts on everything from movies to insurance. But a little research goes a long way – and making the most of your membership dollars is the best way to capitalize on your investment.

it’s the same idea with your chamber of commerce. One of the best ways to connect with those in our community is networking – which is more than simply inviting more people to your Linkedin account (though that’s an important part). Have you been to a Business after Hours or Milton Young Professionals meeting event lately? these are dynamic opportunities which are held 10 times a year - each provides you with a great chance to connect with business associates (new and “not so new”) who can link you up with others with whom you can share your business ideas.

We are very fond of our breakfast events, and if you’re an early bird, you can get into the ear of our many guests who have included Mayor Gord Krantz, MP Lisa raitt, MPP indira Naidoo-Harris, treasury Board President tony clement, dr. Max Blouw, President of Wilfrid Laurier University, senior representatives from MetroLinx and many more. it’s a great opportunity to meet

face to face with those in government and business who are part of the decision makers in our town.

Your chamber works with a great group of volunteers who organize our popular Golf tournament, community awards Gala and Sports celebrity dinner & auction. these three events present a great chance to socialize with colleagues and friends in an atmosphere of fun!

if you’re looking for someone that you met with at any of these occasions, contact the chamber – the team will provide you with a customized list of members.

There are many other benefits to being a chamber member including insurance savings through www.buychambers.ca, group home and auto insurance discounts, first data Merchant Services, esso Business card program (who wouldn’t like to save 3.5 cents off per litre of fuel?) , free editorial write-ups in our newsletter that introduces new members to businesses and residents, priority listings in our Business directory and of course, a personalized certificate and decal to display at your business location.

Membership with the Milton chamber of Commerce carries its own intrinsic benefits. While we may not be able to get you front row tickets to your favourite performance, we will get you a premiere spot to connect with others who value your business.

for those who are already members, thank you for your ongoing support. for those considering membership, it will be one of the best things you’ll do this year for your business. and if you’re a business new to town, welcome to Milton, and welcome to YOUr chamber of commerce.

We are here for you.

exciting fall planned at the chamberSummer 2014 is over and we are

preparing for an exciting fall season at the chamber.

• New website• expanded seminar program• More networking opportunities• Greater profile through

sponsorships• Business referrals for members• Affinity programs

September marks the end of our fiscal year and saying goodbye to our summer students who have been part of the fabric of the chamber for the past 4 months. We have been fortunate to have desiray and alex as part of our team again this year and we will miss them as they leave to resume their studies at university this month.

desiray, our communications clerk, made thousands of phone calls to members and non-members; sent over 4,000 emails and a few hundred faxes in an effort to get the correct information to be used in our 2015 Business directory. this year was made more challenging because of the anti-spam legislation limiting our emails after July 1 to non-members. if you are currently not a member of the Milton chamber please call us at 905-878-0581 and provide us with your detailed information so that you are not left out of the 2015 directory. the listing is free.

this information forms the backbone of our database of Milton businesses and provides us with a comprehensive list of companies, what they do and where they are located. desiray explored all the commercial sectors in town, adding new businesses to our database. She has been able to update the information on businesses that have left town, moved to a new location or opened within the last 12 months. the site visits provide us with a glimpse of the changes taking place in town and what changes are taking place year over year. if you are new in town or have a new neighbour please let us know. You don’t want to be left out of our database and miss the free listing in our annual Business directory that goes to every home and business in Milton.

WELcoME MELissaJoining our team is Melissa Janjevich,

as our 2015 Business directory and 2015 Business to Business newsletter sales representative. Melissa brings an extensive knowledge of the chamber, the Milton business community and the town so please welcome her aboard. She is excited about the project and looks forward to speaking with you in the weeks ahead. advertising information can be found inserted in this newsletter.

Stride (Supported training & reha-bilitation in diverse environments) is a non-profit, charitable, community based vocational rehabilitation program founded in 1983. Stride is the only Halton-based organization whose primary purpose is to serve the employment needs of individuals facing mental health and addiction issues.

Stride provides a comprehensive range of employment support options, which are responsive to individual needs.

a continuum of services is available, including:

•employment connections Program•Worksite training Program•Youth employment ProgramStride is committed to creating op-

portunities for people facing mental health issues to gain meaningful employment. families, doctors, mental health profes-sionals, and community partners may refer individuals, or we accept self-referrals.

It has been estimated that eighty-five percent of people experiencing mental health issues are unemployed. experience has shown that for many of these people, their lives can be

transformed by something most of us take for granted - a job. Stride recognizes that employ-ment and earning power contribute significantly to a person’s sense of dignity, independence and quality of life.

Studies report that ‘work’ is a leading com-ponent in promoting positive mental health and leads to a more fulfilling life in the community. employment increases the level of indepen-dence and speeds the recovery of individuals we serve. Stride provides a variety of meaningful work opportunities which form an integral com-ponent of the overall rehabilitation process.

Milton’s summer social on Saturday morningsthe Milton farmers’ Market is an outdoor

market, where vendors gather Saturday mornings through May 18 to October 11 from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon. the vendors at our market offer a broad array of fresh-picked fruits and vegetables including; preserves, jams, honey and apple cider; breads and baked goods; flowers and plants; meats, eggs and cheeses; ethnic and specialty foods; crafts and pottery. the market is on Main Street (between James and Martin Streets) which is closed down to vehicle traffic and reserved for our 40+ market vendors and the 1000-1500 market visitors who shop there every week.

the Milton farmers’ Market has been bringing farm-fresh goodness and old-fashioned hospitality to Main Street, in downtown Milton, since 1972. Our farmers proudly display “picked fresh this morning” produce and the streets come alive with artisans and flower vendors. The Milton chamber of commerce operates the Milton farmers’ Market and it is one of Ontario’s best outdoor markets.

all across Ontario, shoppers are choosing farmers’ Markets for nature’s best produce, secure in the knowledge that the food is fresh, safe to eat and the next best thing to harvesting it yourself.

People come to meet the vendors who nurtured seedlings into plants, picked the fruit, pulled the vegetables, baked mouth-watering bread and other treats, prepared delectable jams, jellies and other preserves and loaded their trucks early in the morning to bring their products to town. they come to chat, to learn, to leave with tips about perfect ripeness, food preparation and even a recipe or two. they come to connect with the land, many with their own

HoW oLD is tHE MaRKEt?the market has made its home in several

locations over the past 42 years from its beginning in the town Hall parking lot to the carriage Square (former Sunoco Service Station) parking lot to the present Main Street location. We moved to Main Street in June 1990 and have enjoyed the downtown atmosphere since that time. Our vendors work in a spirit of cooperation with downtown merchants and together are responsible for attracting thousands of shoppers every year. the Milton farmers’ Market is one of the few Ontario farmers’ Markets where the street is closed down and pedestrians are free to stroll and visit with local vendors and businesses. the farmers’ Market gives people a real sense of community and is a great meeting place for friends, family and neighbours.

Managed health care: new solutionsPrescription drugs account for 75%

of all extended health care claims so they’re the logical please t concentrate on keeping costs down. a Managed health care (MHc) drug Plan is a particularly good way to tackle the problem.

MHc plans are “formulary Plans”, based on a provincial list (or formulary) of covered medications drawn up by a group of professionals: doctors, pharmacists and scientists. these experts ensure each medication on the list offers both therapeutic and monetary value.

By providing coverage only for prescribed medications on a formulary, the MHc plan saves money in important ways – without discouraging prescription claims. for example, new drugs have to prove their clinical worth before they’re added to the formulary. the plan doesn’t cover experimental treatments or “me too” products which duplicate others already available.

and, a manufacturer can’t simply ”repackage” a medication and reintroduce it at a higher price. the formulary committee requires that additions to the list do something medicinally new. So, if a medicine is available in two formats say a pill and a capsule, the formulary will include only the lower priced one.

Partnership – of patient, pharmacist and doctor – comes into play in making sure prescriptions stay within the list, wherever possible. the patient has to tell the doctor “i’m on a formulary plan”. But, if the patient does reach the drugstore with an uninsured prescription, the pharmacist can help b contacting the doctor and discussing what alternatives might be covered.

By involving consumers and professionals, plus employers with the foresight to choose Managed Health care, we can keep health insurance a viable benefit for year to come.

the Sports celebrity dinner & auction has become one of Milton’s most talked about events, raising the profile of the Milton chamber of commerce and the chamber Scholarship fund. this is a “must attend” event in the chamber calendar, the Sports celebrity dinner & auction brings together sports heroes and sports enthusiasts alike for over 13 years!

Organized by a volunteer committee of chamber members, the evening’s program includes an autograph signing session, a cocktail reception and gourmet meal, and a silent and live auction. Bidding on the live auction items, which in past years have included golf packages, spa packages

and autographed jerseys and sports memorabilia, become one of the highlights of the evening as the energy in the room escalates! The finale of the evening will be the presentations made by our keynote celebrity speakers.

Proceeds from this event and the farmers’ Market Scholarship café go toward the Scholarship Program, funding local students in their post-secondary education. It is our goal to raise sufficient money to create an endowment fund that will be self-funding into the future to ensure monies will be in place in perpetuity to provide scholarships to Milton’s youth.

developed to discuss the future of the chamber Scholarship fund. Historically, monies raised from the Scholarship café were used to offer scholarships to local schools in the community. With the introduction

of the Sports celebrity dinner & auction, raising $10,000 at the inaugural event in 2002, a committee was formed to ensure the continuation, development and again, “smart

growth” of the fund. the committee consists of volunteers, many of whom come from the financial sector, who meet to discuss the possibility of the development of a development fund. a secondary responsibility of this committee is to decide the structure of the chamber Scholarship fund. in the past, we have offered scholarships to the schools and the schools have chosen the recipients with very little involvement by the chamber.
