Story
Address [Hangang River] 23 Donggyeoro 8an-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (Mangwonjeong)
Theme Mangwonjeong Pavilion, used for observing farming and military training activities
Story
One day, King Sejong visited this area and sat in this pavilion just before it started to rain. As it was a much-anticipated rain at the time, King Sejong called the pavilion “Huiwujeong (welcome rain pavilion)”. This beautiful place was also used for military training.
Later, King Seongjong’s brother, Wolsandaegun, had the pavilion renovated and renamed it “Mangwonjeong”. He too came out here to look out over the farmland, watch soldiers training in the water, and enjoy poetry recitals with local noblemen.
King Yeongsangun had Mangwonjeon expanded to make it large enough to accommodate over 1,000 people, so he could hold parties there, and all other structures that could be seen were torn down to clear the view from the pavilion. He also renamed it “Suryeojeong”.
After Manwonjeong was swept away by a flood in 1685 1925, only traces of it could be found in the neighborhood of the same name, Mangwon-dong. In 1990, Seoul City restored the scenic spot as part of a project to restore cultural and historic ruins, and designated it as Seoul City Monument No. 9.
* For more detailed information, please refer to 30 Stories of the Hangang River - A Dialogue with the Hangang River , p. 88.
Tip From Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station on Subway Line 2, take a walk for roughly 15 minutes toward the Hapjeong-dong Community Center and you will encounter the restored Mangwonjeong Pavilion.
Address [Hanyang Fortress Wall] 105 Gwanghuidong 2-ga (Gwanghuimun), Jung-gu, Seoul
Theme Is Gwanghuimun stone powder a “cure-all”?
Story
Take a stroll along the Fortress Wall past Jangchung Stadium and you will come across Gwanghuimun. One of four small gates to Seoul built in the Joseon period (1392-1910), Gwanghuimun was also referred to as “Sigumun,” a name related to the fact that funeral processions regularly passed through the gate during that period.
In the Joseon period, it was forbidden to bury the dead within the walls of the capital, which meant that the bodies of the deceased had to be transported somewhere outside of Seoul for burial. It was through either of the two gates, Soeuimun or Gwanghuimun, that the funeral processions usually passed, making them silent witnesses to the vicissitudes of death. In this respect, the name “Gwanghuimun” is rather ironic as it literally means “bright light”.
In the past, people believed that nothing was more powerful than Gwanghuimun, as it had encountered and endured numerous evil spirits. They believed that a pinch of stone powder obtained by scraping any of the stones of Gwanghuiman would cure all diseases. Residents of local regions, whenever they heard that someone they knew was planning to travel to Seoul, would ask that person to bring them some stone powder from Gwanghuiman as a favor.
The restoration of Gwanghuimun began in 1975, after the designation of Seoul Fortress Wall as a historic site in 1963, and the gate is now completely open to the public after 39 years of restoration work.
