Taking the form of a two-screen video and audio installa on, Ma Stokes' new commission is inspired by Barry Hines’ produc on Threads, which portrayed a fi c onal cold-war nuclear a ack on Britain. years a er its original broadcast, Stokes envisions the impact of such an event on the human body, and its social and cultural consequences. Collabora ng with composer Ben Gaunt and a cast of

Sheffi eld-based vocalists, he depicts a transformed society in which archaic customs and systems prevail. In this futuris c world, the human voice and other func ons, have been aff ected by radia on sickness and environmental diseases. This manifests itself withtwo languages being spoken by two diff erent socie es. One society survives in a lamp-lit underworld, communica ng via a form of mutated English and clipped sounds, whilst the second lives in a scorched overground environment conversing via a form of tonal expression. Heard together the two diff erent groups produce confl ic ng vocal sounds, which as the work progresses, move closer to each other, from disharmony to harmony. On Saturday October at pm Sara Cluggish,

Curator will give a tour of the exhibi on.FREE Bookings via www.sitegallery.orgIn partnership with Film Hub North, led by Showroom Worksta on. Proud to be part of the BFI Film Audience Network.

As record their fi rst album, marking the birth of Heavy Metal, Hera, is a young girl growing up in a remote rural area of Iceland. She sees her beloved brother Baldur—a long haired heavy metal fan—killed in a horrifi c accident. Emo onally trapped and unable to move on, she takes on Baldur’s wardrobe, and takes up the guitar, channelling her anger into unrepentant rebellion, masking the fact that she is lost and sinking fast. When her childhood friend returns intent on marrying her and a young priest moves to the farming community, the wheels of fate start turning.
