SONLANDPARK. - Waterdale Road just nearthe entrance to Sonlandpark claimed three outof four lives early on Monday.
The gruesome accident left the communityshocked.
The gruesome accident stunned passing mo-torists because the sheer force of the impacthad unearthed a tree by its roots.
The fortunate survivor cannot talk as he isfighting for his life in hospital. He was rushedto Sebokeng Hospital before being transferredto Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Amongst the three people killed was the car-owner, identified as Lehlohonolo Kolisang, a29-year-old young man from Zone 3. The grue-some accident mystified observers because allthat was left of the crash was the back-side ofthe car.
The blue vehicle was found hanging in thetrees, with the roots of a tree suspectedly unear-thed by the force of the impact. All three vic-tims were immediately declared dead afteremergency personnel had examined the scene.
According to the deceased’s brother LuckyKolisang, who was at the scene within hours,he was initially summoned to the VereenigingPolice Station:
“I had to move. I knew something bad hadhappened. At the same time, I tried to be positi-ve about the situation until I reached the policestation. It’s unbelievable! We just celebratedMothers Day. The family cannot take suchnews. It’s unbearable,” said Lucky.
The accident was especially shocking to re-gular users of that road because, a month befo-re, a crash occurred that killed two people whentheir vehicle also hit a tree. “This road is a dan-ger to our lives, I have never seen such an im-pact in my life,” said Granny Phiri.

Baloyi’sspeech touched on fundamental issues such asEducation, Economic Transformation and Ser-
vice Delivery in the area. On the issue of eco-nomic transformation in the area, Baloyi urgedMidvaal residents to be forward thinkers:
“The Gauteng premier discussed the needto unlock the agricultural potential of Sedibengas the food basket of the Gauteng City Regionand position the region as an Agropolis, whichis exactly what Midvaal has been working on.”

agriculture, we are devising an agriculturalpolicy which will see us involved in a rangeof agricultural projects.” On the issue of hous-ing, Baloyi stated that Council has already ap-proved plans for the upgrading of Sicelo Shice-ka Ext 4 & 5, where the plan is to consolidateand re-subdivide the properties into residen-tial, business and community facility stands:

The event was witnessed by hundreds of members of thepublic gathered a mere 10 metres away from the Vaal river-bank on Mario Milani Drive. The project should create upto 7 500 jobs in the construction phase alone. The estimatedcost of the project is R7-billion to R11-billion. Once establis-hed, the Vaal River City will have many benefits, includinggeographic consolidation of highly urbanised areas of rapidgrowth, large scale residential +and mobility of people, goods and services. The development of the new Vaal RiverCity (hydropolis) aims to unlock the potential of waterfrontdevelopment in the Emfuleni and Midvaal areas. The Sout-hern Corridor encompasses the economy of the SedibengDistrict and the creation of new industries, economic nodesand cities. Kukama said the unique residential and commer-cial development will enable the greater public to have ac-cess to river frontage and offer the opportunity for everyoneto enjoy the parklands and landscaped expanse. He said thecentralised civic buildings mean that residents will have ac-
cess to essential services as it becomes part of a centralisedMetro and will offer affordable housing on prime river locati-ons. Mofokeng said this was a momentous occasion for thepeople of Sedibeng as it celebrates an exciting future for theregion adding that the South African landscape is changingwith development that will leave an environmental legacy forgenerations to come. Said Mofokeng, “Itwill benefit the poor areas and fast-track development andhousing delivery.” Premier Makhura said it is the govern-ment’s intention to do away with the RDP houses develop-ment: “Together with the private sector, we are implementinglarge scale, sustainable mega-human settlement projects onwell located land with socio-economic opportunities.” Hesaid in the people’s view, a post-apartheid city must mirroroverall commitment to a society that is truly equal, wherethere is expanded access to socio-economic opportunities andwhere there’s dignity and property for all. Many of these pro-jects are catalytic in nature and their impact will be felt acrossthe Gauteng economy and space. The project will be imple-mented in line with and guided by overall commitment tothe transformation, modernisation and industrialisation ofGauteng. Makhura said the projects will create 1000 perma-nent jobs per annum over three years. The private sector in-tends to invest more than R4-billion in the development.

TThere is no ‘I’ in the word TEAM. This I ca-me to realise recently. In a team we all haveour positions, which are in some way all linkone to the other. You could compare a teamto a chain, once it breaks somewhere, the bicy-cle cannot function or the dog runs loose.
It is one thing to create a team but quiteanother to create teamwork, just as it’s onething to join a team, but another to performas a team. Teamwork to me means not to workalone, but rather together with others in orderto achieve a common goal. I came to realiseover the weekend that in a team each and eve-ry player is important, that each and everyplayer has their own special qualities and thatin a team we should all take responsibility andnot become liabilities to one another. Thereshould never be individuals in a team who feelmore valuable than others, who feel that ifthey are not there, the whole mechanism will
fall apart, Never. I might be the Captain butI will never achieve anything if I look downon my squad. This I believe applies in theworkplace, in a sports team, in a relationshipand lastly in the household. Great teams donot hold back with one another. They are un-afraid to air their dirty laundry. They admittheir mistakes, their weaknesses, and theirconcerns without fear . Teamwork is impor-tant as according to me it does not mean every-body doing the same thing or everybody beingable to do each other’s jobs. It is more a meansto a synergistic way of working together whe-re the sum is greater than the parts. Properly
managed teamwork brings out the best in allinvolved, even those that are perceived to belazy or insignificant. How often have we seena team made up of expensive players outper-formed by teams with players who may be in-dividually less talented? The next time youthink you are good-looking, have achievedmore, that you are better, more intelligent oryou are a harder worker than others then youare lying because, without them, you wouldnot have been here. “Talent wins games, butteamwork and intelligence wins champions-hips.” ― Michael Jordan

SEDIBENG. - “South Africa was pooreven before foreign nationals were amongus.”
This came from Troy Mathebula, presi-dent of the Students Representative Coun-cil at the Vaal University of Technologyrecently. Mathebula was speaking duringa mass meeting called by VUT Manage-ment. The meeting included staff mem-bers, students and all stakeholders againstxenophobia. Mathebula said local com-munities trying to drive foreign nationalsout of the country would bring about nochange:
“In the 1980s and 90s our parents didnot have decent jobs, education and hous-ing so it was the same story even whenthe foreigners were not here.
“We know that we do not have land be-cause the ANC is not willing to return it.We live in congested areas because there’sno land.
“Killing them or driving them (foreign-ers) away will not put food on the table
or give you a job. Killing them is not goingto make our children stop alcohol abuse. Our children do this to avoid the realitythat they nothing better to do with theirlives.” He adds that killing Pakistanis orZimbabweans would not give skills, jobs,or create own industries or make sanita-tion better:
“It will make us cold-blooded murder-ers. It means we are not the children ofthose people who went into exile to fightfor the liberation of the country. “Thosewho blame foreign national are not tellingthe truth. The reason for our misery is thefailure of the government, which caresmore for the rich. We elect people whodo not care about us. Our leaders are notafraid to send Police to kill us. If we arecowards, we will always shift blame toother people. Once we have chased theforeigners away, we will blame ourselves- we’ll blame different ethnic groups, likein the 90’s. “When we finish, husbandswill turn against their wives for being use-less. The blame has to be put straight on
the government.”He said even before 1980 there was still
no proper life:“These foreigners are here for a better
life. It is the government that destroys ev-erything. It is the government that weshould be marching to, to demand the bet-ter life they promise. We should march tothe union buildings and occupy them untilJacob Zuma passes a law that will returnland to the people.
“We should be marching to the big min-ing companies to occupy their offices untilthey release money to build the housesthey have destroyed. “We should be tell-ing the banks to provide free educationand build new universities with all themoney they take from the people. “Let usnot let evil and hatred swallow us. Afri-cans must resist deadly hatred and bitter-ness. Africa is ours and we must share itand its resources. Today, Somalia, Paki-stan, or Zambia need our help - tomorrowit might be us. Let us say ‘no’ to xenopho-bia and stop killing foreigners.”
Foreigners could go, but SA will remain poor

VEREENIGING. - Employees claim theywere not paid for two month by the EmfuleniLocal Municipality, ELM.
In this way they vented their frustration onELM and not on the paymaster ELM had re-tained to pay them out. Employees did not holdresponsible the Specialised Violation System,SVS, but, instead of blaming the Emfuleni’sservice provider SVS, workers who are sup-posed to be collecting over R1 million monthly
from ELM say they have not been paid for twomonths.
When confronted by Sedibeng Ster, Emfu-leni Public Safety MMC Councillor VellyMcera said it is not his duty to speak publiclyabout the service provider.
Mcera could not confirm or deny that localgovernment had not paid the service provid-er.“Yes,” said Mcera, “SVS is the service pro-vider collecting the debt on behalf of the Emfu-leni. They are contracted to Emfuleni and are
based in our building. The SVS has neverbrought complaints around payment to our at-tention. We did not hire the employees of SVS.We hired a company. Should the workers haveconcerns regarding their payments. They areat liberty to approach this company.” Mceradid not want to be dragged into the matter ofsaying the municipality had not paid the serviceprovider:
“The problem with the service providermight be that they don’t communicate with
their workers. They always pull away from tell-ing the truth. Workers are advised to communi-cate with the employer.
“As the municipality we never anticipatedany lack of service from the said company. Ido not work in Human Resources or in the mu-nicipal manager’s office.” The question, for ex-ample, of how much the company collects permonth is out of his jurisdiction. The SVS ser-vice provider could not be reached for com-ment.

SEBOKENG. - The recent Sebokeng Wed-ding Expo at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centrewas a big hit and exhibitors got to show offtheir products and market themselves. They can onlyagree that they were satisfied, that they defini-tely got some great ideas, and that exhibitorscould expect a call from them. VANDERBIJLAPRK. - Watershed Chris-tian School learners weregiven a lecture on life, prison and crime onThursday.
Ex-offenders MartinSibanda and TshepoChuene explained to thelearners what a life behindbars is really like.
Chuene was arrestedand spent 10 years in pris-on. He served five years inGroenpunt for hijacking.
By the time he was 21,the ‘motor-master’ hadstolen 340 cars. “Crimewas the coolest method ofbecoming famous or noto-rious. I thought I was un-touchable but eventuallymy life of crime caught upwith me and I was arrestedand sent to prison for 10years.
I wished I could go back in time and dothings over but it was too late. I was incarcer-
ated and had to face the consequences of mywrongdoing,” Chuene said to learners and
staff.He added that he
learned his lesson andthat he wasted 1 825days of his life. He doesnot want to see anyoneelse go down that road.Chuene is a VUT drop-out. His parents tried ev-ery means to educatehim, but he chose a lifeof crime.
Siband, founder of Po-lite CommunicationHoldings who organisedthe event, served 10 of15 years in GroenpuntMaximum CorrectionalService for house break-ing and theft.
He says the purpose ofthe event is to educatelearners on questions
they should ask themselves before they en-gage in crime.
“Prison life is not child’s play. It’s a jungle
dominated by the principle of ‘survival of thefittest’, pitting groups against groups in acongested space. Anything and everythingcan and does happen behind those highwalls.”
He says it’s one’s choice to look ahead andkeep one’s head high.
The learners were given the opportunityto ask questions and it seems that they hadlearned a lot during this special event.

These were the words of Sebokeng SAPSboss Brigadier Jan Petrus Scheepers, themain speaker at a Mothers Day celebrationon Friday.
He referred to the Psalm of David abouta capable wife: “God has given you capability

The world can try to describe and defineyou, but you are not what the world sees, youare what God says you are,” said Scheepersto the multitude that attended the MothersDay celebration.
The event was conducted by the well-known Lieutenant-Colonel Maria Mazibuko. She explained that a mother is a motivator,

She further gave the house an opportunityto celebrate by singing and praising God, ded-icating their lives to Him and their families.
A special young woman and also an entre-preneur, Barbie Thekiso from Breeze Clean-ing, encouraged the house with her businesssuccess story: “Breeze Cleaning is a domesticcleaning company. We do what you don’twant to do.

VANDERBILJPARK .- The Bishop TutuHall in VUT was parked half full by studentfashion-lovers recently.
This was when they attended a fashion andbusiness event hosted by business and fashi-on students. The event was so well organisedand successful that it promises to become anannual occasion.
It showcased young and untested fashiondesigners, reports Bonginkosi Ripinga, nowthe show director/ student and model.
It was a musical and entertainment fashionstatement gala. All fashion designers livedup to expectations. It was great show for stu-dents who attended the event and parentswho supported their children.“We are verygrateful for the support we got. We are plan-ning to do this event every year. We are stillyoung in the industry and we want to learn
as students. Fashion is part of talent but, atthe end of the day, it should be a business,”said Tebogo Ngwenyama, a creator of theshow.
Victor Masombuko, part of the creativeteam, says a number of fashion designers we-re willing to showcase their work:
“Fashion needs business acumen - marke-ting and ability.”
He further said they used fashion modelsfrom school to further showcase their talentas some are taking fashion modelling seri-ously.
Business speakers said a word or two toencourage students to pursue their careersand love what they do.
The showcase was further graced by thealways-funny comedian Mduduzi Mabaso, who set the house on fire with his jokes kee-ping audience awake.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Esokwazi Secondary School willrepresent Sedibeng in the Coca Cola Provincial Play-Offs.This was after this Zone 7-based secondary school execu-ted this feat during the Coca Cola regional playoffs at CecilOldridge Park Stadium this past weekend. The school wonall their group-stage matches before they beat Mohloli Se-condary School 2 - 0 on penalties in what can only bedubbed a very exciting final to watch. This will not bethe first time the school has represented Sedibeng in a high-profile school soccer tournament. Last year the school re-presented this region in the McDonald U/16 Tournamenthosted by Sedibeng. This was before they lost to Prestigi-ous College in the final. However, the school’s achieve-ment can be attributed to their head coach William “Vecks”Gumula, who has also coached one of the most successfulacademies – the Evaton Youth Development Academy -
in this region.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Gumula says he credi-
ted the school’s success to the players and the fighting spiritthey showed during the tournament. He also thanks schoolprincipals and teachers for their support.
However, it is important to note that the majority of play-ers in the team were from the Evaton Youth Academy. This makes sense, taking into consideration the successof the school: “I must say, these boys really made all ofus proud, not only the Zone 7 community, but the entireSedibeng community, for qualifying for another major soc-cer tournament.
The fighting spirit was unbelievable during the tourna-ment and winning all the group-stage games was the high-light of the day. I must thank everyone who contributedto the success of the team from preparation to the day ofthe tournament. It was a team effort.”

“We are pleased to announce that we havebeen chosen to host a 21km race which willtake place on the same day.
“This 21km race is proudly brought to youby the Free State Athletics Organizing Bodyand will be part of the Free State Champions-hips,” says owner Christo Ziotopolous.

A thousand T-shirts and medals will be han-ded out in different categories on race day. Theprize money at stake totals a tidy sum of R17500 for both the 21km and 10km Race. In the10km race, for example, the prize money is R1250 for the first man and first lady home, R600for the man and lady in second place, R350 forthose in the third and R250 in the fourth place. But that’s not all. There are many more prizessuch as for juniors and veterans in different agegroups.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Air Products SouthAfrica once again demonstrated its ongoingsupport of young agriculture students withthe sponsorship of Inmed’s aquaponics unitat Carel de Wet High School in Vanderbijl-park recently.
Inmed, a global children’s organisation, launched the unit in August 2013 in partner-ship with Air Products South Africa, in orderto introduce students to aquaponics, an agri-
cultural technique that combines aquacultureand soilless crop growing.
The aquaponics project has generatedmuch interest overall among students takingagriculture as a school subject.
The first group of students, Grade 10 and11 learners at the school, who are studyingagriculture as a subject, were recently ho-noured at an awards ceremony.
Of the 16 students who took part, 12 recei-ved graduation certificates while the remain-
der received participation certificates. Grade 10 pupil Matshepo Maduna clind-
ched top honours with her impressive 95%mark.
“It has been an honour to be involved inthis exciting initiative, which teaches youngpeople an innovative and environmentally-friendly method of farming to help combathunger among communities in our country,”said Josua le Roux, General Manager: Cen-tral Support at Air Products South Africa.
The aquaponics training programme in-cludes a combination of ‘hands-on’, practi-cal experience at the school’s farming facili-ty, plus a theoretical component.
Air Products South Africa’s sponsorshiphas paid for the training and the developmentof course material.
In addition, Air Products donated a giftvoucher for each student who achieved apass mark of 80% and above, and a prizefor the top student.
“As a company, we feel strongly that thekey to a healthy and sustainable future liesin developing our youth, thereby allowingthem to become resourceful and self-reli-ant,” Le Roux concludes.
Sponsorship bears fruit
Grade 10 pupil Matshepo Maduna of CarelDe Wet High, who received top honours, ispresented with her award by Barry Little,Project Director at Air Products South Afri-ca.

Congratulations Fikile Unifire Zulu, for this month’s winning story! Situated not far from Sebokeng, Evaton West commonly known as Mkhelele is a developing black neighbourhood. It is divided into extensions to easily identify different areas within. It has been in existence for at least 18 years.
There are a number of small businesses on every street, has three primary schools, one high school, a skills development centre, a mobile clinic and a community hall. You’ll also find kids enjoying a game or two of skipping “kgathi” or soccer tournaments however there’s a massive need for resources that young people urgently seek; a library and a recreational/sports centre where they can be able to excersize their talents that often go unnoticed.
Not turning a blind eye to the level of substance abuse and crime it tears the community apart.Nyaope drains life out of young people on a daily basis. Evaton West is a place where stars are born but many don’t seem to realise their potential to shine. You hear of colourful dreams and see hopeful faces but who can they turn to in order to turn those dreams into reality? That’s where role models and mentors come in.
Opportunities arise all the time, only a few are able to get them. I know we have a long way to go but as a developing community we are on our way there. Unity speaks volumes.

The status quo of football in this region leavesmuch to be desired, to say the least. TOUCHLI-NE recommended that Safa Sedibeng be putunder administration by the Safa national offi-ce for the following reasons:
“To inquire into the administrative and/or fi-nancial affairs of Members, and, where neces-sary, to recommend corrective measures in thisregard and, should these measures not be im-plemented, to take over the administrative and/or financial affairs of the Members until theseare placed on a satisfactory footing.”
TOUCHLINE has learned that Safa nationaloffice to this end appointed Andile Ndengezi
as Regional Administrator with all the powersof the Regional Executive Committee. In fact,Ndengezi has been granted 60 days to restorethe normal functions of the Region. This is abad time for Sedibeng football, taking into con-sideration that this is a ̀ first’. It is the first timethis region has been put under administrationby the Safa national office.
This region once had academic administra-tors such as Molefi Oliphant who went on tobe a household name in South African footballas Safa President. However, lately, our footballhas been run by any Tom, Dick or Harry.
No longer are there football administratorswho put the interests of football first, as was
the case in the past. TOUCHLINE had an inte-resting discussion with some former local foot-ball administrators regarding the status quo ofour football. They say there is an embarrassingsituation in football where “nobody” can beelected or appointed to run it.The Safa constitu-tion has been ignored, undermined and floutedby the very people voted into power by those“ghost” teams.TOUCHLINE believes that thelikes of Ntate George Thabe would turn angrilyin their graves if they could see what was hap-pening to our football. Ntate Thabe, Molefi Oliphant, Knocks Matjila and many others, were the most respected football administra-tors in this country.TOUCHLINE challenges
all former administrators to come forward tointervene and help restore the pride of footballin this region. How can one explain this – thefootball association is run by the club owners, which is something against the Safa constituti-on. This is a conflict of interest in football, tosay the least. If Safa Sedibeng is under admini-stration, surely our local football associationalso needs to be investigated. Some football ad-ministrators have turned football into a narrati-ve that orbits their personal egos.
TOUCHLINE believes everyone should beput under administration in this region inclu-ding our LFAs, because some of them are notfunctioning.
Everyone should be put under administration

SEBOKENG. - The Democratic Alliance(DA) has made a special plea to the EmfuleniLocal Municipality to re-open Sebokeng’sZone 10 nine-hole golf course. This golf cour-se was one of the best in Sedibeng before ne-glect set in.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, DA repre-sentative Teboho Maraka believes the coursecould be utilised by all people around the area.
He stresses further that the young could usethe golf course as a development and, further-more, for competitions:“The course has notbeing maintained for ages, to the extent that
some golfers don’t even know that the munici-pality zoned that area for a golf course before1994. DA wants Emfuleni to fence it andmaintain it.“As things stand we have only theEvaton Golf Course, though its condition alsoleaves much to be desired.”Sedibeng has sixgolf courses: Meyerton, Emfuleni, Vander-
bijlpark, Riviera Golf Course in Vereeniging,Maccauvlei Vaal and Evaton Golf Course.Maraka says it would be appreciated if the mu-nicipality could speed up the request to re-open the Zone 10, Sebokeng nine-hole golfcourse, which could be turned into a full 18-hole course.

SEDIBENG. - Sandile Ncala says they arestill deeply involved in the development ofsport in this region.
This was how the veteran athletics admini-strator responded to TOUCHLINE’s recentarticle, which was headlined “Where havethey gone?”
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Ncalasays the only challenge they face is lack ofsponsorship for township athletics clubs.
He says they are still much involved in thedevelopment of athletics and they still hostsome of the meetings/races in Sedibeng.
“After I saw the TOUCHLINE commentrecently I thought I must come forward be-
cause the article challenged many of us, eventhose who have since given up athletics.
I’m happy that such an article came out be-cause some of us are still involved in the deve-lopment of athletics in this region.
Our main problem is a lack of financialmuscle and there is nothing we can do.
We have tried everything we can but our
township business people seem not careabout the sport.
Sport people are the very same people whosupport their businesses but they don’t wantto plough back into the community. Yes, thereare those who contribute to the sport, butothers do nothing about this matter,” says Ncala.
Athletics need financial injection Ncala

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Despite playing entertaining foot-ball NWU Vaal FC suffered another defeat at the hands ofSoweto Panthers FC in the ABC Motsepe League matchplayed at the Vaal Campus on Saturday. The latter languishesat the bottom of the ABC Motsepe League log and - withfour games left – The team is heading for relegation. Manyask themselves how the team finds itself in this kind of situa-tion, considering the kind of football they displayed recently. This was one game that kept students - who came in numbersto support their team - on the edge of their seats. It was end-to-end staff with the home team toying with their opponentsfor the better part of the game, until its dying minutes whenthe visitors scored the winner, much to disappointment ofhome supporters.
However, it was too late for their darling team as it willcampaign in the lower division next season. To date, NWUclinched ABC Motsepe League status at the beginning ofthe season, Now ironically the club will be relegated at theend of the season, having spent only a season in this league.
NWU Vaal head coach Thomas Thema says they havelearned a lot in the league and this will help them going for-ward.
