2014. Polymer Degradation and Stability. A series of novel random copolymers of poly(butylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PBCE) containing triethylene glycol sub-unit (P(BCEmTECEn)) were synthesizedand characterized in terms of molecular and solid-state properties, among these barrier properties to differentgases (oxygen and carbon dioxide). In addition, biodegradability studies both in soil and in compost andecotoxicological analysis, by means of the Lepidium sativum test, have been conducted.

2014. Carbohydrate Polymers. All-cellulose nanocomposite (ACNC) film was produced from sugarcanebagasse nanofibers using N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride solvent. The average diameter of bagassefibers (14 m) was downsized to 39 nm after disk grinding process. X-ray diffraction showed that apparentcrystallinity and crystallite size decreased relatively to an increased duration of dissolution time.Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that thermal stability of the ACNC was slightly less than that of the purecellulose nanofiber sheet.

Desarrollo y caracterización de películas compuestas deextracto de semillas de carragenina / pomelo para envasesactivosPublicada el 12/05/2014

2014. International Journal of Biological Macromolecules. Carrageenan-based antimicrobial films weredeveloped by incorporation of grape fruit seed extract (GSE) at different concentration into the polymer using asolvent casing method and their physical, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties were examined. Thecarrageenan/GSE composite films appeared yellowish tint due to the polyphenolic compounds in the GSE.SEM analysis showed rough surface with sponge like structures on the cross section of the films. FT-IR resultsindicated at GSE had good compatibility with carrageenan. The amorphous structure of polymer films was notchanged by the incorporation of GSE. But, the addition of GSE increased moisture content, water vaporpermeability, and surface hydrophilicity of the films.

Novel electrochemicalDNA-based biosensors with outer-sphere Nafion and chitosan protectivemembranes were prepared for the evaluation of antioxidant properties ofbeverages (beer, coffee, and black tea) against prooxidant hydroxylradicals. A carbon working electrode of a screen-printed three-electrodeassembly was modified using a layer-by-layer deposition technique withlow molecular weight double-stranded DNA and a Nafion or chitosan film.The membrane-covered DNA biosensors were initially tested with respectto their voltammetric and impedimetric response after the incubation of thebeverage and the medium exchange for the solution of the redox indicator[Fe(CN)6]3/4.

Desarrollo de quitosano basado en películas comestibles:optimización de procesos utilizando la metodología desuperficie de respuestaPublicada el 12/04/2014

2014. Journal of Food Science and Technology. Three-factors Box-Behnken design of response surfacemethodology (RSM) was used to optimize chitosan level (1.5, 2.0, 2.5 %w/v), glycerol level (0.5, 0.75, 1.0%w/v) and drying temperature (35, 40, 45 °C) for the development of chitosan based edible films. Theoptimization was done on the basis of different responses viz. thickness, moisture, solubility, colour profile (L*,a*, b* value), penetrability, density, transmittance and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The linear effectof chitosan was significant (p<0.05) on all the responses. However, density was only significantly (p<0.05)affected by glycerol in a negative linear fashion.

The degradation of the main proteinfractions and the characterization of peptides arising from caseins weremonitored by nano Liquid Chromatography and electrospray ionization iontrap Mass Spectrometry (MS) coupled with a bioinformatics approachbased on the scoring distribution and a post-database search validation.Microbiological and sensory properties of fiordilatte samples packagedunder different conditions were also evaluated in order to find possiblecorrelations between quality decay of cheese and peptide profile.

2014. LWT - Food Science and Technology. In this work a new methodology based on thermo-pressing aresin made from gliadins and glycerol has been developed to obtain water resistant films. The effect ofprocessing temperature was studied on the functional properties of the films. The results of SDS-PAGEanalysis of the molecular weight profiles of the resulting films were indicative of disulfide/sulfhydryl interchangereactions giving rise to the formation of intermolecular disulfide bonds between the gliadin units. Thesereactions augmented the degree of cross-linking of the matrix, which increased with thermo-pressingtemperature, as evidenced by the residual reaction enthalpy values determined by MDSC as well as by cross-linking density values determined from tensile tests.

Use of antimicrobial substancesbased on essential oils is of great importance and can control the microbialpopulation and target specific microorganisms to provide higher safety andquality products. The main objective of this review is to provide a state ofthe art about the shelf life of foodstuffs, the history of packaging and aliterature review about the different types of packaging concepts. Thisreview provides several types of antimicrobial packaging and especiallythe incorporation of essential oils in packaging with discussion on the useof essential oils, their general properties with respect to the mechanism ofaction, effectiveness and the effects on foods.

A method to carry out large-scale manufacturing of everyday objects using a fully degradable bioplasticisolated from shrimp shells has been developed by researchers at Harvard's Wyss Institute. The objects madefrom this bioplastic, like cell phones, food container and toys, exhibit many of the same properties as thosecreated with synthetic plastics, but without the environmental threat. This development is better than mostbioplastics on the market today, as it poses no threat to trees or competition with the food supply. Mostbioplastics are made from cellulose, a plant-based polysaccharide material. The Wyss Institute team developedits bioplastic from chitosan, a form of chitin, which is a powerful player in the world of natural polymers and thesecond most abundant organic material on Earth. Chitin is a long-chain polysaccharide that is responsible forthe hardy shells of shrimps and other crustaceans, armor-like insect cuticles, tough fungal cell walls—andflexible butterfly wings.

El 31 de diciembre de 1994, entró en vigor la Directiva 94/62/CE relativa a los envases y residuos de envases[1](en lo sucesivo denominada la "Directiva sobre los envases original"). El 7 de diciembre de 2001, laComisión presentó una propuesta de Directiva del Parlamento Europeo y del Consejo [2] por la que semodifica la Directiva 94/62/CE relativa a los envases y residuos de envases, para su aprobación mediante elprocedimiento de codecisión establecido en el artículo 251 del Tratado CE (en lo sucesivo denominada"Directiva sobre envases revisada") Entre otras cosas, la directiva sobre envases revisada establece objetivosmás ambiciosos de valorización y reciclado, que deben alcanzarse a más tardar el 31 de diciembre de 2008...

2014. Carbohydrate Polymers. Highly exfoliated, biodegradablethermoplastic starch (TPS)/polylactic acid (PLA)/sodium montmorillonite(NaMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by an eco-friendly approach,involving in-situ gelatinization of potato starch in presence of dispersednanoclay followed by melt mixing with PLA. The morphological analysisrevealed that the NaMMT was selectively dispersed into the TPS in ahighly delaminated manner. An increase in mechanical as well asthermomechanical properties was evident in the presence of PLA andmore influenced in the presence of clay.

Caracterización fisicoquímica y termomecánica de películacomestible de goma de tara: Efecto de polioles comoplastificantesPublicada el 18/04/2014

2014. Carbohydrate Polymers. The aim of this study was to evaluate tara gum as edible film material as wellas the influence of polyols as plasticizers on the properties of the films. Thermomechanical, physicochemicaland barrier properties were determined as a function of plasticizer type and concentration. Glycerol, sorbitoland PEG 400 were used in the range of 0.075–0.3 g/tara g. Glycerol was the best plasticizer in terms ofmechanical properties with the highest elongation (16 - 44%) and resistance (45 - 90 MPa). Sorbitol presentedthe best barrier properties with the lowest hydrophilicity and water vapour permeability (0.24–0.34 g mm m2 h1kPa1).

This paper compares the effect of incorporating high barrier self-adhesivenanostructured interlayers of zein between layers of other polyhydroxyalkanoate materials (a PHBhomopolymer and a PHBV5 copolymer with 5% valerate content). Furthermore, similar reference multilayerstructures based on both a polylactide (PLA) and a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were also prepared,retaining high levels of transparency. The results indicate significant differences of the effect of the interlayerbetween different materials.

2014. European Polymer Journal. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) bio-nanocomposite films modified with limonene as plasticizer and reinforcedwith cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) extracted from agro-waste, such asPhormium tenax leaves, have been prepared by using a twin-screwmicroextruder and characterized. The extraction of cellulose was carriedout by chemical treatment followed by sulphuric acid hydrolysis process.Binary and ternary films containing the plasticizer (20 wt.%) and/or theCNC (1 and 3 wt.%) were produced and characterized in terms ofmorphological, thermal, mechanical and wettability properties. The effect ofCNC content and the combination with the specific plasticizer on thestructural properties of PLA films were also investigated.

This month, the dedicated Spanish plastics technology R&D center Aimplas in Valencia opened its newlyexpanded fully equipped research unit for business. The new building, which will focus on research intonanomaterials, materials from renewable sources, composites and intelligent materials has a total surface areaof 4,500 m2 and is spread over three floors. The new unit will not only allow Aimplas to be able to increase thenumber of research projects that are implemented every year, it will also facilitate the transfer of generatedknow-how from the research lab to enterprises active in the plastics industry in Valencia, but also throughoutSpain.

LightManufacturing LLC,founded in 2010 as a solar thermal technology company, announced lastmonth that the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued it apatent covering the use of concentrated solar thermal energy for moldingplastic. The proprietary technology, Solar Rotational Molding (SRM),allows low-cost manufacturing of large plastic objects like water tanks andboats without the use of fossil fuels. The patent describes the use ofheliostats (sun-tracking mirrors) to concentrate heat in a plastic moldingsystem.

2014. Materials Science, Coatings & Films. Polystyrene/thermoplastic starch blends from 90/10 to 50/50 (w/w)were prepared by melt blending. Blends were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (morphology);thermogravimetric analysis (thermal stability and weight content of each component); Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (identification of functional groups); differential scanning calorimetry (thermal properties); tensiletests (strength, modulus, elongation at break and tenacity) and biodegradation in soil (biodegradability). Thebiodegradation process was also followed by thermogravimetric analysis calculating the loss of eachcomponent after removing the samples from soil at different time intervals.

2014. Food Chemistry. Previously, we developed a novel metal-chelatingpackaging film (PP-g-PAA) by grafting acrylic acid (AA) monomer frompolypropylene (PP) film surface, and demonstrated its potential incontrolling iron-promoted lipid oxidation. Herein, we further established theindustrial practicality of this active film. Specifically, the influence of filmsurface area-to-product volume ratio (SA/V) and product pH on theapplication of the film was investigated using an oil-in-water emulsionsystem. The films equally inhibited lipid oxidation throughout the range ofSA/V ratios tested (2–8 cm2/ml). PP-g-PAA films were most effective at pH7.0, and the activity decreased with decreasing pH.

Quince seed mucilage (QSM) films containingoregano essential oil at 1, 1.5 and 2% v/v were prepared to examine theirantibacterial, antioxidant, physical, thermal, microstructural andmechanical properties. Addition of 1% oregano essential oil did not affectthe oxygen and water vapor permeability of the films. Incorporating OEO,increased total color differences (E) and decreased whiteness index (WI).A decrease of elastic modulus (EM) and tensile strength (TS)accompanied with an increase in elongation at break (%EB) was observedwith increasing oil concentration up to a level of 2.0% (w/w).

2014. The effects of active slow-releasing pasteurizing packaging (self-made) on the quality of Kyoho grapes were studied. Conventionalpolyethylene (PE) membrane with preservation tablets and nakedtreatments served as the control groups. Grape quality changes wereevaluated by comparing sensory evaluations and experiment results. Theresults showed that the storage period of treatment packaged with activeslow-release pasteurizing packaging can be extended to eight days.

Novel nano-biocomposite films based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were prepared by incorporating thymol, as the activeadditive, and modified montmoril lonite (D43B) at two differentconcentrations. A complete thermal, structural, mechanical and functionalcharacterization of all nano-biocomposites was carried out. Thermalstability was not significantly affected by the addition of thymol, but theincorporation of D43B improved mechanical properties and reduced theoxygen transmission rate by the formation of intercalated structures, assuggested by wide angle X-ray scattering patterns and transmissionelectron microscopy images.

First, acrylic acid (AA) was grafted onto PPsurface by photograft polymerization reaction, and then either MB orchitosan chains (Cs) was attached to polyacrylic acid (PAA). Threesyntheses were researched in order to fix MB to PP-g-PAA–Cs intodifferent levels of PAA–Cs layers. The growth of microorganisms and thegeneration of reducing substances take place during milk decomposition,where MB is reduced to its colourless form.

ANSI/SPI B151.31-2014 Safety Requirements for the Manufacture and Care ofBlow Molding Machines is a newly created standard that addresses the safety requirements for both extrusionand injection blow molding machines. The two revised American national standards are ANSI/SPI B151.7-2014Safety Requirements for Extrusion Machines and ANSI/SPI B151.29-2014 Safety Requirements for VerticalClamp Injection Molding Machines.

Producción global de bioplásticos se estima crecerá 400% el2016Publicada el 28/03/2014

The current global production capacity of bioplastics, including both biodegradable and bio-based plastics, isabout 1.5 mln tons, which supposes a total revenue of about Euro 4,400 mln. A significant growth of thebioplastic market is expected in the next few years. Some sources estimate an increase of the globalproduction capacity by 400%, reaching values of about 5.8 mln tons in 2016. In terms of revenue, this marketwould reach more than Euro 13,700 mln, as per Miguel A. Sibila, researcher of the Department of Sustainabilityand Industrial Valorisation of AIMPLAS in jeccomposites.com. This growth is mainly due to two factors: theirhigh technical substitution potential compared to conventional materials and their environmental benefits. Froman environmental point of view, bioplastics are an attractive and sustainable alternative to conventionalmaterials. On the one hand, the use of natural raw materials reduce both the dependence on fossil fuels andthe greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere at the end of life (30-80% depending on the material andapplication). On the other hand, biodegradable plastics can be jointly managed at the end of life with otherorganic waste.
