Ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation
Non-ionizing radiation is a low energy EM wave that cannot cause ionization in materials such as heat, light, sound, RF, microwave, and UV. However, they may cause cellular damage when received in large quantity such as UV burnIonizing radiation is a high energy EM wave such as gamma ray, X-ray and particles (α, β, p, n, fission fragments). They cause ionization of materials (eject electron(s) from orbit to form ion pairs) and can cause cellular damage by breaking chemical bonds, or materials damage by displacing atoms from their regular lattice positions

Types of radiation and shielding
Alpha radiation (α): positively charged helium nucleus emitted by a large (Z > 82) unstable nuclei (U, Pu, Th, etc). Massive particle, but has a short range in air (1-2 cm) and can be stopped completely by paper or skin (and become helium gas atom). Alpha radiation can be hazardous if it enters the body by inhalation or ingestion, because large exposure can result in nearby tissues, such as
the lining of the lung or stomach.
11
• Typical energy = 4-8 MeV
• Limited range < 10 cm in air, 60 µm in tissue
• High LET (Quality Factor = 20) causing heavy damage (alpha
radiation is the most ionizing radiation)
• LET (Linear Energy Transfer) refers to rate at which energy of
radiation is transferred to medium in units of keV/micron.
• More LET means more energy transfer to the medium per distance
and, consequently, more damage to the medium

Types of radiation and shielding
Beta radiation (β): electron or positron (same mass as electron but with positive charge) emitted by an unstable nucleus. Much smaller with lower LET than alpha particles, so it can penetrate further into materials or tissues. Beta radiation can be absorbed complete by a sheet of plastic, glass, or metal. It does not normally penetrate beyond the top layer of skin. However, large exposures to high-energy beta emitters can cause skin burns and damage to eye lens. Such emitters can also be hazardous if inhaled or ingested. Common in research: H-3,
C-14, S-35, P-32, Sr-90, Tl-204
14
• There are 3 hydrogen isotopes: protium (H), deuterium (D) and radioactive
tritium (T)
• Tritium is radioactive with a half-life of 12.3 years and a biological half-life of
~ 10 days.
• Low-energy (avg. 5.7 keV) beta decay (3H 3He + β-).
Tritium
15
High pressure tritium gas is sealed inside these small glass vials. The emitted low-energy beta radiation
impacts a special phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, causing it to grow
green.

16
• Typical energy = several keV up to 5 MeV
• Wide range of energy levels:– Tritium (H-3) only 0.0186 MeV Max, can’t travel through air to reach
your skin
– P-32 is toasty (1.71 MeV Max), can travel across the room to get you
• Range ~ 12 ft/MeV in air, a few mm in tissue
• Low LET (Quality Factor = 1) causing light damage
• High speed electrons may lose part of their energy in the form of X-rays when they quickly decelerate upon striking a heavy material
• This is called Bremsstralung (or Breaking) Radiation.• High Bremsstrahlung energy is from high electron energy and high
atomic # (z) of absorber.
• So aluminum and other light (z < 14) materials such as plastics are
used for beta shielding
• This is important for x-rays production in conventional x-ray tubes.

Bremsstrahlung
• Bremsstrahlung, from bremsen = "to brake" and Strahlung =
"radiation", i.e. "braking radiation" or "deceleration radiation", is
electromagnetic radiation produced by the acceleration/deceleration
of a charged particle, such as an electron, when deflected by
another charged particle, such as being attracted by an atomic
nucleus.

Origin of beta particle:from negatron decay
Negatron decay Excess Neutron turns into Proton (most beta-
emitters are produced by n bombardment of stable isotopes in a reactor, thus the nucleus has an excess neutron)
A stays the same, Z goes up +1, element changes
Neutrino emission accompanies decay Example: C-14 becomes N-14

1.1.3 Positron (positive electron of continuous energy)
Positron emission Excess proton turns into neutron (thus positron
emitters are often produced in a particle accelerator such as cyclotron, which can accelerate proton to collide with target element)
Proton gains negative charge, becomes neutron To conserve charge, positive electron is emitted A stays the same, Z goes -1, element changes Neutrino emission accompanies decay Example: Na-22 becomes Ne-22 Positron is hardly detected because
after it is slow down, annihilation withelectron occurs which liberates 2 gamma rays

Auger electrons• X-ray or gamma ray can cause ejection of an electron.
• A hole is created and an electron in the higher orbital falls to fill in
the hole, emitting a characteristic X-ray.
• This X-ray may be transferred directly to one of the outer electrons,
causing it to be ejected called Auger electron.
• Energy = Atomic excitation energy (char. X-ray) - binding energy.
• Auger electrons produce a discrete energy spectrum.
• Energy is low compared to beta particles or conversion electrons
because it is favored in low-Z elements as binding energies are low.
• A typical few keV initial E is subject to self-absorption and can be
stopped by very thin source covers or detector entrance windows.
• Example of applications: elemental analysis of a very thin surface
layer.

Types of radiation and shieldingGamma radiation (γ): very high energy photon emitted from an unstable nucleus that is often emitting a beta particle at the same time. Causes ionization in atoms when it passes through matter, primarily due to interactions with electrons. Can be very penetrating and only a substantial thickness of dense materials such as steel, lead (1 in.) or heavy concrete (8 in.) can provide good shielding. Gamma radiation can therefore deliver significant doses to internal organs without inhalation or ingestion. Very high penetration capability because it has no charge, no mass, and low LET. Examples: Co-60, Cs-137
Gamma radiation
• Gamma radiation is emitted by excited nuclei, often by beta decay.
• There is no pure, gamma emitting radioisotopes.
• Beta decay has half-life, while de-excitation occurs in the order of
picoseconds or less.
• Gamma ray, therefore, appears with a half-life characteristic of a
parent decay, but with energy of daughter de-excitation.
• Gamma-ray reference sources for radiation measurement normally
consists of samples of radioisotopes of a few microcuries encased in
plastic disks or rods.
• Encapsulation thickness is large enough to stop any particulate
radiation from parent nucleus decay.
• The only radiation emitted is gamma radiation produced in daughter
decay.

Types of radiation and shielding
X-rays are high-energy photons, like gamma radiation. They are produced artificially by the deceleration (or acceleration) of an electron beam, such as firing an electron beam at a metal target. X rays are similarly penetrating and, in the absence of shielding by dense materials, can deliver significant does to internal organs. Gamma rays typically have higher energy (MeV's) than X-rays (keV's). X-rays and gamma rays are low LET

Types of radiation and shielding
Neutron radiation (n) is a neutron emitted by an unstable nucleus, in particular during fission and fusion reactions. Because they are electrically neutral, they can be very penetrating and when they interact with matter or tissue, they cause the emission of beta and gamma radiation. Neutron radiation therefore requires heavy shielding to reduce exposures. Free neutrons are unstable and will decay into proton and beta particle with half
life 12 mins. Fast n = high LET
33
• Because neutrons has no charge and can only efficiently transfer
energy by collision with atoms with similar mass to neutron
(hydrogen), it can be very penetrating similar to gamma radiation
• Neutron shielding can be materials with high hydrogen content, for
example, paraffin, polyethylene, concrete, water
• Several feet of water or concrete are required to stop most of them
• Example of sources: Cf-252, Pu-240 (both spontaneous fission),
Am(α,n)Be, Pu(α,n)Be neutron sources.
• Pu/Be is most widely used.

Neutrons
Spontaneous fissions• Many transuranic heavy nuclides have an appreciable spontaneous
fission decay probability.
• Several fast neutrons are emitted in each fission event, so a sample
of such radionuclide can be a simple and convenient neutron
source.
• Other products are heavy f.f., prompt gamma ray, beta and gamma
activity of f.p. accumulated within the sample.
• The source is generally encapsulated in a sufficiently thick container
so that only fast neutrons and gamma rays are emitted.

Neutrons
Radioisotope (α,n) sources• Alpha particles can be conveniently obtained from radioisotopes.
• The maximum neutron yield is obtained when beryllium is chosen as
the target:
2α4 + 4Be9 6C12 + 0n1 Q = + 5.71 MeV
• Most of alpha particles are stopped in the target, and only 1 in ~ 104
reacts with beryllium nucleus.

Neutrons
Photoneutron sources• Some gamma emitter can be used to produce neutron when
combined with an appropriate target material.
• The photoneutron source is based on supplying sufficient excitation
energy to the target nucleus by absorption of gamma ray to allow
emission of free neutron.
• Be-9 and H-2 are practical significant sources:
hν + 4Be9 4Be8 + 0n1 Q = -1.666 MeVhν + 1H2 1H1 + 0n1 Q = -2.226 MeV
• Only gamma rays with at least the Q energy is required to make the
reaction energetically possible.
• If gamma rays are monoenergetic, neutrons are also nearly
monoenergetic.

There are 4 important types of gamma ray interaction with matter, depending on the energy of gamma ray:
• Photoelectric Effect
• Compton Scattering• Pair Production• Photonuclear Reactions• In addition, there are two processes with very small energy
transfer:• Thomson (elastic) scattering on a ‘free’ electron, redirection of
low energy photon without change in energy
• Raleigh (coherent) scattering results from combined (coherent) action of an atom as a whole.
Interaction of gamma ray with matter

42
• Occurs predominantly when gamma ray or X-ray carries energy < 0.1 MeV
• Photon transfers the entire energy to the inner orbital electron
• The incident photon disappears
• The photoelectron is ejected
from the atom with kinetic
energy:
Ek = energy of photon –

44
• For gamma ray of sufficient energy, the most probable origin of photoelectron is the most tightly bound or the K-shell electron.
• As the photoelectron is ejected, a vacancy is produced in the atomic orbital which is then filled with an electron from a higher atomic orbit.
• This process results in the emission of a characteristic X-ray, which is itself absorbed in the material.
Photoelectric Effect
45
• Probability of photoelectric ≈ const*(Zn/E3) • n can be from 3 for low energy gamma to 5 for high
energy gamma
• It can be seen that chance of photoelectric effect occurring increases with lower gamma energy and with higher Z number
• This effect is important for < 1 MeV gamma incident on high Z materials (so lead is good for gamma ray shielding).

46
• Occurs predominantly when gamma ray or X-ray carries energy > 0.1 MeV
• Most prominent interaction mechanism for gamma-ray energies typical of radioisotope sources
• Photon transfers part of its energy to the outer shell electron
• The Compton electron is ejected from the atom
• It continues until it recombines with matter
• The incident photon leaves the atom with lower energy making an angle with the incident direction

• Occurs when gamma ray energy >= 1.022 MeV in the presence of an atomic nucleus to provide a coulomb field
• Positron-electron pair is created and the remaining gamma ray energy is transferred to the newly created pair
• The positron energy will be attenuated in the matter
• Once it collides with orbital electron, the two will annihilate, giving out two gamma rays each with 0.511 MeV energy travelling on the opposite side

• The gamma ray photon interacts with the nucleus directly: (γ,n), (γ,p), (γ,2n), (γ,α), (γ,f), etc.
• These are threshold reactions, meaning that the incident photon must possess energy high enough to overcome the binding energy of the ejected nucleon
• Need at least several MeVs of photon energy (x-ray normally has energy in the keV range, gamma ray normally has energy in the MeV range, so predominantly for gamma ray)
• For example, 206Pb(γ,n)205Pb, Emin = 8 MeV

• Occurs with x-ray energies < 10 keV
• Incoming x-ray photon strikes an atom and is absorbed – the atom gets excited
• The same amount of energy is released in another x-ray emitting in a different direction
• In essence, this is simply a redirection of x-ray; the x-ray energy remains the same

58
• This is analogous to billiard ball collision
• A neutron particle collides with the nucleus, transfers some energy to it, and bounces off in a different direction
• The target nucleus gains the energy lost by the neutron, and then travels off
• This is the underlining mechanism for radiation damage in matter
• If the neutron collides with a massive nucleus, it rebounds with almost the same speed and loses very little
energy
• Light nuclei will gain a lot of energy
and will therefore be more effective
for slowing down neutrons
• Elastic scattering is not effective
in slowing down neutrons with
very high energy (> 150 MeV)
Elastic scattering – (n,n)
59
• A neutron strikes a nucleus and is temporarily absorbed, forming an unstable compound nucleus in an excited state
• It then de-excites by emitting another neutron of lower energy, together with a gamma photon, which takes the remaining energy
• This process is most effective at high neutron energies in heavy materials
Inelastic scattering – (n,n')
60
• A nucleus may absorb a neutron forming a compound nucleus, which then de-energizes by emitting a charged particle, either a proton or an alpha particle
• This produces a nucleus of a different element
• These nuclear reactions are most likely to occur when the energy of the incident particle is between a few MeV and several tens of MeV.
• (Transmutation is the transformation of one element into another by a nuclear reaction)
Transmutation – (n,p), (n,α)

• This is one of the most common nuclear reactions
• The neutron is absorbed into the nucleus
• The compound nucleus formed emits only a prompt gamma photon
• In other words, the product nucleus is an isotope of the same element as the original nucleus and are usually radioactive and are beta and gamma emitters

• Nuclear radiation, unlike the radiation from a light bulb or a microwave, is energetic enough to ionize atoms by knocking off their electrons.
• This ionizing radiation can damage DNA molecules directly, by breaking the bonds between atoms, or it can ionize water molecules and form free radicals, which are highly reactive and also disrupt the bonds of surrounding molecules, including DNA.
• If radiation changes DNA molecules enough, cells can’t replicate and begin to die, which causes the immediate effects of radiation sickness -- nausea, swelling, hair loss.
• Cells that are damaged less severely may survive and replicate, but the structural changes in their DNA can disrupt normal cell processes -- like the mechanisms that control how and when cells divide.
• Cells that can’t control their division grow out of control, becoming cancerous.

• The absorption of energy from ionizing radiation produces damage on DNA by direct and indirect actions (chemical bonds breaking).
• For direct action, damage occurs as a result of ionization of atoms on key molecules in the biologic system. This causes inactivation or functional alteration of the molecule. This occurs by photoelectric and Compton interactions. Ionization occurs at all radiation qualities but is predominant at high LET radiations. Absorption of energy sufficient to remove an electron can result in bond breaks.
• Indirect action involves the production of reactive free radicals from water molecules whose toxic damage on the key molecule results in a biologic effect (most abundant molecules in human is water). Predominate with low LET radiation. Electrons interact with water to form OH radicals (2/3 of x-ray biological damage).
• (A free radical is an electrically neutral atom with an unshared electron in the orbital position. The radical is highly reactive.)

75DNA is found in every cell and consists of molecules that determine the function that each
cell performs. When radiation interacts with a cell wall or DNA, the cell either dies or becomes a different kind of cell, possibly even a cancerous one.

• Biological membranes serve as highly specific mediators between the cell and the environment.
• Alterations in the proteins that form part of a membrane’s structure can cause changes in its permeability to various molecules, i.e., electrolytes.
• In the case of nerve cells, this would affect their ability to conduct electrical impulses.
• In the case of lysosomes

• Ionizing radiation has been suggested as playing a role in plasma membrane damage, which may be an important factor in cell death

• A rough calculation shows that dose from natural radiation results in one ionization in the DNA-molecule in every cell in the body each year.
• Certain enzymes are checking the DNA strings and initiate a repair process.
• Cells can repair the damage if it is limited.
• Even damage to the chromosomes is usually repaired.
• Many thousands of chromosome aberrations (changes) occur constantly in our bodies.
• We have effective mechanisms to repair these changes.
• Thousands of dead cells are eliminated from the human body every day, and thus the body has a certain tolerance for it when radiation adds to the natural toll.

• Radiation sickness is damage to your body caused by a very large dose of radiation often received over a short period of time (acute).
• The amount of radiation absorbed by the body — the absorbed dose — determines how sick you'll be.
• Radiation sickness is also called acute radiation sickness, acute radiation syndrome or radiation poisoning.
• Common exposures to low-dose radiation, such as X-ray or CT examinations, do not cause radiation sickness.
• Although radiation sickness is serious and often fatal, it's rare.
• Since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, during World War II, most cases of radiation sickness have happened after nuclear industrial accidents, such as the 1986 nuclear reactor accident at a power station in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

88
• The severity of signs and symptoms of radiation sickness depends on how much radiation you've absorbed.
• How much you absorb depends on the strength of the radiated energy and the distance between you and the source of radiation.
Absorbed dose and duration of exposure• The absorbed dose of radiation is measured in a unit called a gray
(Gy).
• Diagnostic tests that use radiation, such as an X-ray, result in a small dose of radiation — typically well below 0.1 Gy, focused on a few organs or small amount of tissue.
• Signs and symptoms of radiation sickness usually appear when the entire body receives an absorbed dose of at least 1 Gy.
Radiation Sickness -- Symptoms
89
• Doses greater than 6 Gy to the whole body are generally not treatable and usually lead to death within two days to two weeks, depending on the dose and duration of the exposure.
Initial signs and symptoms• The initial signs and symptoms of treatable radiation sickness are
usually nausea and vomiting.
• The amount of time between exposure and when these symptoms develop is an indicator of how much radiation a person has absorbed.
• After the first round of signs and symptoms, a person with radiation sickness may have a brief period with no apparent illness, followed by the onset of new, more serious symptoms.
• In general, the greater your radiation exposure, the more rapid and more severe your symptoms will be.

When to see a doctor• An accident or attack that causes radiation sickness would no doubt
cause a lot of attention and public concern.
• If an event occurs, monitor radio, television or online reports to learn about emergency instructions for your area.
• If you know you've been exposed to radiation, seek emergency medical care.
Radiation Sickness -- Symptoms
92
• Radiation sickness is caused by exposure to a high dose of radiation
Sources of high-dose radiation• Possible sources of high-dose radiation include the following:
– An accident at a nuclear industrial facility
– An attack on a nuclear industrial facility
– Detonation of a small radioactive device
– Detonation of a conventional explosive device that disperses radioactive material (dirty bomb)
– Detonation of a standard nuclear weapon
• Radiation sickness occurs when high-energy radiation damages or destroys certain cells in your body.
• Regions of the body most vulnerable to high-energy radiation are cells in the lining of your intestinal tract, including your stomach, and the blood cell-producing cells of bone marrow.
Radiation Sickness -- Causes
93
• When a person has experienced known or probable exposure to a high dose of radiation from an accident or attack, medical personnel take a number of steps to determine the absorbed radiation dose.
• This information is essential for determining how severe the illness is likely to be, which treatments to use and whether a person is likely to survive.
• Information important for determining an absorbed dose includes:
– Known exposure. Details about distance from the source of radiation and duration of exposure can help provide a rough estimate of the severity of radiation sickness.
– Vomiting and other symptoms. The time between radiation exposure and the onset of vomiting is a fairly accurate screening tool to estimate absorbed radiation dose. The shorter the time before the onset of this sign, the higher the dose is. The severity and timing of other signs and symptoms may also help medical personnel determine the absorbed dose.
Radiation Sickness – Tests and diagnosis
94
– Blood tests. Frequent blood tests over several days enable medical personnel to look for drops in disease-fighting white blood cells and abnormal changes in the DNA of blood cells. These factors indicate the degree of bone marrow damage, which is determined by the level of an absorbed dose.
– Dosimeter. A device called a dosimeter can measure the absorbed dose of radiation but only if it was exposed to the same radiation event as the affected person.
– Survey meter. A device such as a Geiger counter can be used to survey people to determine the body location of radioactive particles.
– Type of radiation. A part of the larger emergency response to a radioactive accident or attack would include identifying the type of radiation people have been exposed to. This information would guide some decisions for treating people with radiation sickness.

95
• Radiation sickness itself doesn't cause long-term medical problems for those who survive the illness.
• However, the radiation exposure that caused the immediate radiation sickness does significantly increase a person's risk of developing cancer later in life.
• Having radiation sickness could also contribute to both short-term and long-term mental health problems, such as grief, fear and anxiety about:
– Experiencing a radioactive accident or attack
– Mourning friends or family who haven't survived
– Dealing with the uncertainty of a mysterious and potentially fatal illness
– Worrying about the eventual risk of cancer due to radiation exposure

• Radiation sickness treatment is aimed at preventing further radioactive contamination, managing organ damage, reducing symptoms and managing pain.
Decontamination• This phase of radiation sickness treatment removes external
radioactive particles to the greatest extent possible.
• Removing clothing and shoes eliminates about 90 percent of external contamination.
• Gently washing with water and soap removes additional radiation particles from the skin.
• Decontamination at the start of radiation sickness treatment prevents further distribution of radioactive materials and lowers the risk of internal contamination from inhalation, ingestion or open wounds.

Treatment for damaged bone marrow• A protein called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, which
promotes the growth of white blood cells, is used in radiation sickness treatment to counter bone marrow damage.
• This protein-based medication, which includes filgrastim (Neupogen) and pegfilgrastim (Neulasta), may increase white blood cell production and help prevent subsequent infections.
• If you have severe damage to bone marrow, radiation sickness treatment may also include transfusions of red blood cells or blood platelets.

98
Treatment for internal contamination• Some radiation sickness treatments may reduce organ damage
caused by radioactive particles.
• Medical personnel would use these treatments only if you've been exposed to a specific type of radiation.
• These treatments include the following:
– Potassium iodide. This is a nonradioactive form of iodine. Because iodine is essential for proper thyroid function, the thyroid becomes a "destination" for iodine in the body. If you have internal contamination with radioactive iodine (radioiodine), your thyroid will absorb radioiodine just as it would other forms of iodine. Treatment with potassium iodide may fill "vacancies" in the thyroid and prevent absorption of radioiodine. The radioiodine is eventually cleared from the body in urine.

99
– Prussian blue. This type of dye binds to particles of radioactive elements known as cesium and thallium. The radioactive particles are then excreted in feces. This treatment speeds up the elimination of the radioactive particles and reduces the amount of radiation cells may absorb.
– Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). This substance binds to metals. DTPA binds to particles of the radioactive elements plutonium, americium and curium. The radioactive particles pass out of the body in urine, thereby reducing the amount of radiation absorbed.

Supportive treatment• If you have radiation sickness, you may receive additional
medications or interventions to treat: Bacterial infections, headache, fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, dehydration.
End-of-life care• A person who has absorbed large doses of radiation (6 Gy or
greater) has little chance of recovery.
• Depending on the severity of illness, death can occur within two days or two weeks.
• People with a lethal radiation dose will receive medications to control pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
• They may also benefit from psychological or pastoral care.

Spontaneous fission
• Fission is asymmetric: light group and heavy group with average
mass number 108 and 143 (E~ 80 and 105 MeV).
• The fragment appears initially as positive ions with the net charge
approaching the atomic number of the fragment.
• As it slows down by interaction with materials, electrons are picked
up, reducing effective charge.
• Energy shared between two f.f. is ~ 185 MeV.
