Cosi Fan Tutte (All Women Are Alike) Two young officers, Guglielmo and Ferrando, confidently accept a bet from Don Alfonso (an old bachelor and philosopher) that their fiancées, Dorabella & Fiordiligi (sisters), will forget them and take new lovers if the officers are not around. The officers agree to fake their sudden departure to the wars and to come back in disguise; they will then attempt to win over each other's fiancée. Before the officers “depart,” the two sisters are in a garden gazing at the portraits of their lovers; they pour out their fondest feelings in the duet, Ah! Guarda Sorella (Look Here, Sister). Don Alfonso announces the two officers have suddenly been called to the wars. He and the sisters sing the beautiful trio, Soave Sia il Vento (May The Breeze Blow Gently), to wish them a safe journey at sea. The two officers appear disguised as Albanians intending to test their fiancées’ fidelity by singing the duet, Secondate, Aurette Amiche (Friendly Breezes, Bear My Message).
La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny) The Marquis’s daughter, Leonora, has been forbidden to marry Alvaro. Alvaro and Leonora attempt to escape; during a confrontation with the Marquis, Alvaro drops his pistol to surrender but it accidentally fires, killing the Marquis. Leonora's brother, Don Carlo, swears to seek out his sister and Alvaro for revenge. In despair, Leonora flees to the Monastery of the Madonna of the Angels where she hides in a lonely mountain cave under the protection of the monks. Solo/Chorus: La Vergine degli’Angeli.
Norma Norma, a Druid high priestess, is praying for peace because she fears further battles with the Romans may endanger Pollione, a Roman proconsul and the father of her two sons ‐‐ Casta Diva. But Pollione is falling for another priestess, Adalgisa. In Act 1, Scene II, Adalgisa confesses to Norma that she has broken the vows of chastity and that she is in love with Pollione. In the duet Mira o Norma Adalgisa initially asks for forgiveness while Norma expresses sorrow over the betrayal; Norma then decides to allow Adalgisa and Pollione to be reunited, but Adalgisa has a change of heart and she will beg Pollione to return to Norma and the sons. In the second half of the duet the two priestesses affirm their love for each other.
Mefistofele Mefistofele, the fallen angel, wagers with the Lord that he can win the soul of Faust, a philosopher. The deal is struck when Faust accepts Mefistofele's offer of youth and joy during life on earth in return for the Devil getting his soul after death. A magically rejuvenated Faust meets Margherita and pursues her; he convinces her to give her mother a sleeping potion so the lovers can be in private. Things go terribly wrong, and Margherita is imprisoned awaiting her execution for poisoning her mother and drowning her baby. Margherita refuses help from Mefistofele; she prays and begs for mercy and sings L’altra Notte in Fondo al Mare.
Zelmira Zelmira is the daughter of King Polidoro on the Island of Lesbos. When the ruler of Mitilene, Azorre, invades Lesbos, Zelmira hides her father in the royal tomb. Zelmira then shows her affection to Azorre until he is murdered which leads to victory and restores Polidoro to the throne ‐‐ Riedi al Soglio. Performance Note: Zelmira is seldom performed because the story line is weak and the music also poses technical difficulties for singers and instrumentalists; however, the aria Riedi al Soglio is considered one of Rossini's masterpieces.
Message from Lucy C. Lin Bel Canto which means “beautiful singing,” is the essential art and science of Italian vocal technique and style. Bel Canto is characterized by evenness throughout the vocal range, skillful legato, a light upper register, tremendous agility and flexibility with immaculate articulation. It is an important basic vocal technique for any kind of singing from classical to musical theatre, jazz and popular music. My students performing this evening are being trained using the Bel Canto vocal method.
Guarda Sorella(妹妹,你看)是兩姊妹在
Soave Sia
il Vento(願和風徐吹)預祝戰士平安。
Secondate, Aurette Amiche(清風送上 我心意)。
Mira a Norma
L'altra Notte in Fondo al Mare.
