Funfacts•At night we also see planets and the Moon. But they do not make light like stars. They shine because they are lit up by the Sun.

noW I understand! stars shIne because

they are gIgantIc baLLs of fIre, LIke the sun.

they Look sMaLL to us because they are very,

very far aWay.

•Some stars in the universe are so far away from us that it takes years and years for their light to reach Earth!

1. Stars are huge balls of fire. They are made of burning gas. As they burn they give off a lot of light.

3. Stars do not only shine at night. They shine all the time. But we only see them when it is dark. During the day it’s too bright to see them because the Sun – another huge star that is nearer to Earth – is shining.

but if stars are huge balls of fire,

then why do they look so small to us?

Why do stars only shine at

night?

2. Stars look small to us because they are very, very far away from earth, out in the immense universe.

SamSam and SamTeddy are flying over the North Pole.

With his SamEars, SamSam hears someone calling for help.

A horrible Ice Monster is chasing a little penguin!

It is icy… but SamSam never feels the cold.

With his SamEyes he can see very far away…

He is about to swallow it when… SamSam arrives!

The Ice Monster melts and melts… until it is just a puddle of water.

The little penguin says, “Thanks, SamSam! You saved my life!”

SamSam shoots a heat ray with his BiffBoffer.

SamSam warms the little penguin up. Phew! It is fine!

The Ice Monster catches the poor penguin and freezes it…

Help!

Mountain haresMountain haresWhere do they live?

What do they eat?

how big are they?

Mountain hares change colour. in the summer their fur is brown. But in the winter it turns completely white except for… on the tips of its ears! In the mountains

all over Europe and around

the North Pole.

They are as long as your arm.

Fruit, bark and plants. They are herbivores

(plant eaters).

In winter, mountain hares spend a long time out in the open looking for food. Their thick fur keeps them warm.

This hare can smell something under the snow…

It digs down and finds a young tree. The hare nibbles on its buds. Yummy!

What a feast!

Suddenly, the hare stops. It has heard a noise. It stays still so it will not be spotted. Its white coat makes it almost invisible

against the snow so that its predators (hunters) cannot see it.

The hare does not sense any danger. The noise was just the wind.

It finishes its meal and sets off again, leaping through the snow.32 33

amazing but true…

in winter, mountain hares sometimes dig a burrow in the snow for shelter. in the summer, they hide between rocks or under large bushes.

Mountain hares come out of their burrows mostly at night.

The hare keeps going. But something has spotted it.

The hare has not seen the eagle flying up above!

The hare dives under some trees to find food. Phew! The eagle did not manage to catch it. The hare was lucky.

It will need to be more careful next time…

Mountain hares have very wide paws that stop them sinking into

the snow.
