BASIC APPLIQUTECHNIQUES

Machine Set-Up:Use a bobbinwith lightweight thread thatmatches the background colorof the garment fabric. This willeliminate the need to changebobbin thread for every needlethread color change. Thread themachine with embroidery threadthat matches the appliqu design.Lower the machines uppertension to 3 or less, which will

cause the needle thread to pull tothe bottom; this will give a moresatin-looking stitch on top. Usean open toe appliqu foot andengage needle down option ifavailable.

Place a piece of tear-a-waystabilizer on the wrong side ofthe fabric under the area that

will be stitched. As you stitch thedesign, always pivot when theneedle is on the outside edge ofthe appliqu fabric. Sew fast and

move the fabric slowly. Whenthe tree has been appliqud on(see stitching order that follows),remove the stabilizer from the

wrong side of the fabric aroundthe outside edges of the tree butdo not remove the stabilizer thatsinside the tree area. This stabilizer

will help when stitching tatting tothe design later.

PRODUCT NOTE:Steam-A-Seam 2

Steam-A-Seam 2 is a double-sidedfusible stabilizer. It is slightlysticky and may be re-positioneduntil it has been ironed.

TIP:Always use a press clothwhen working with a fusible!

STITCHING APPLIQUDESIGN

1. Stitch tree trunk first usinga stretch straight stitch (L=3.0).Stitch along each outer edge first.Next, stitch a few rows of curvedstitching on actual trunk to adddepth (fig. 5). Pull thread tails to

wrong side and tie off.

2. Satin stitch tree (W=2.5 3.0;L=0.35.) (Test machine and adjustas needed).

3. Make snow (see directionsbelow), and blanket-stitch snow inplace.

MAKING SNOW

Stitching together two pieces offabric gives snow a full, fluffyappearance.

1. Transfer snow design to a plainpiece of paper. Roughly cut outaround drawn design.

2. Place two pieces of white snowfabric with right sides together.
