The Turkish textile and apparel sector, which
continues to grow with the export rates it
has achieved, continues its upward trend in
2018, too, which it has recorded in 2017. According
to the data of Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM),
sector exports in March 2018 reached the highest lev-
el of the last 44 months. Textile and apparel
exports worth $ 1,683.513 bi lion in March is the
highest amount reached since July 2014. Exports of
the sec-tor in July 2014 is 1,720.102 billion dollars.
The i ndustry’s t otal e xports i n t he fi rst qu arter
reached 4,520.217 billion dollars, evaluating growth
opportunities and focusing on exports. The a ppar-
el industry, increasing its share of value-added and
branded exports by stripping away from its contract
manufacturer identity, recorded an increase of 11.4
percent compared to the first quarter of the previous
year.
The h ighest share o f exports in the l ast 44 months
has been achieved in Istanbul. The largest export was
made to Germany. Goal of Turkey, the world’s sev-
enth largest and the second largest supplier destina-
tion and the European Union, is to go beyond the
19 billion dollars bar by the end of 2018, breaking
a new record. As the TextoWear magazine, we are
proudly supporting the goal of two-fold increase in
the added value of apparel industry, which is expected
to increase in added-value as well as export amount.
We are quite excited and hopeful that the industry
will come to a position that has a say in the global
world in value added and branded production.

some of the segments this number reaches to 25-30 dollars.
When we look at the products that we send to the Europe, it
is about 25 dollars. Brand making is a serious process. One of
the most important elements for the brand is that its country
herself is a brand. In this area, we are an important brand. In
the Middle East, Turkic Republics, South Africa and Balkans

to create a chain to become a brand in Europe. We have a

“Türk Malı Dünyanın Her Yerinde”

çeken Öztürk, dünyanın her yerinde bir Türk malı giyim eşya-

algısının değiştiğini belirten Öztürk, buna karşın ihracatçının
pes etmediğini ve müşterinin ayağına giderek satışlarda önemli
bir başarıya ulaştığını dile getirdi.
Öztürk, sözlerini şöyle sürdürdü; “Önümüzdeki süreçte bu

“Turkish Products are in everywhere around the World”
Öztürk emphasized that textile sector is the one that brings
the most foreign currency after the automobile sector and that
they are sending products to 211 countries today. He said that
one can come across a Turkish wear product in any part of
the world. Öztürk stated that the attitude of the European
buyers towards Turkish wear products changed after the re-
cent political problems, but the exporters did not give up on
working, went to their customers and achieved a big success
in their sales.
Öztürk continued his words as follows: “Our success will con-
tinue periodically in the future, because Turkey’s machine set-
ting, infrastructure and qualified labor force and works that
are focusing on designing for innovation are rather important.
Although we are at the seventh biggest supplier when we look
at the world in general, we still fall below the Europe. When
we look at the market standards, I think that we can overcome
this by organized work and our collaboration culture.” The
sector focuses on designing and branding and keeps on work-

Form Düğme attracts attention in the sector with the natural materials
it produces. Stepping in the sector in 1996 and standing out with
their buttons made up of natural materials, Form Düğme produces
buttons and accessories from natural materials. In manufacturing of but-
tons, there is a wide range of products such as horns and bones produced
from from the core of the corozo tree, to wooden and pearl. Additionally,
the company also produces bakelite buttons. Mustafa Oktay, Co-Found-
er of Form Düğme, shares private information with our publishing group
about the innovative works of the company.
Any Colour Can Be Applied
Oktay provides information about their product portfolio and says “the
corozo button is made from the core of some kind of palm tree and the
desired color can be applied on it. Our customers can choose colors either
from our pantone or they can just send fabric or yarn samples and dye
them to to the colours they prefer. On the other hand, cotton buttons
can be sewn and dyed on the product, thus providing cost advantages to
the manufacturer. Bakalite buttons, all processes of which we manage in
our own way are the preferred buttons thanks to their model variety and
quality-price balance”.
Sector Prefers Natural Ones
The button is now regarded as an essential accessory, providing the unique-
ness of the design from an ordinary complementary side. “It is quite diffi-
cult to catch the integrity if you do not choose the right accessory, regardless
of the quality of the fabric or sewing of the sewn garment”, explains Oktay.

girmeyi hedefliyoruz. Yurtdışında markalaşma ve e-ticaret satışlarını arttır-
maya yönelik dijital pazarlama çalışmalarımız devam edecek.” ifadelerini
kullandı.
He says he accordingly prepares collections two times in a year. “Especially
in recent years, tendency towards natural products as a result of substantial
changes in the purchasing behaviour of the conscious consumers has in-
creased”, continues Oktay, referring to the most preferred products of the
industry. Products that are easy to recycle, do not harm the environment,
and that consider human health are preferred more. The certifications given
by important institutes in this regard are very important. We also produce
products with the Oeko-Tex document, which has a prominent place in the
textile sector”, comments Oktay.
“Trends Help Us Renew Ourselves”
Fashion is constantly renewing itself. “Every new trend allows us to renew
ourselves and improve our designs,” suggest Oktay, adding that clothing
accessories are among the essentials of trends. Holding an important market
share in the domestic market, Form Düğme has also increased its export fig-
ures with the studies it has carried out. “We provide services to very prom-
inent brands and apparel manufacturers trough the agency works we carry
out in Europe and Balkan countries as well as India and Bangladesh, which
are among important markets. We plan to increase our export figures
with our partnerships in the upcoming period”, comments Oktay. Form
Düğme also provides services to theirs customers with a strong marketing
team in the domestic market. The company aims to take its service one step
ahead by increasing its production capacity with the activities they conduct
for capacity increase.
Need In The Sector Creates The E-Trade Platform
Oktay states end users are having difficulty reaching natural buttons, par-
ticularly tailors and private sewing houses have to go to wholesale stores in
certain regions to make button supplies, and they are aware of this deficit in
the sector and thus they created an e-commerce platform. “We created an
e-commerce platform under the Form Düğme platform. Users can access
all kinds of natural buttons and men’s accessories from here”, comments
Oktay. Mustafa Oktay, Co-Founder of Form Düğme also mentioned the
goals they set for 2018. Oktay says 2017 was particularly productive in the
last quarter. “Incoming demands have shaped our 2018 targets. We will
have some production development projects in the plant. Besides, we also
aim to penetrate into new markets. Our digital marketing efforts to increase
branding and e-commerce sales in abroad will continue”, concludes Oktay.

Moda tasarımcılığının stereotip olması gerektiğine inanmadıklarını be-
lirten tasarımcılar, “Yani diğer bir deyişle iyi giyinmek, geniş bir gardıro-
ba sahip olmak veya magazin dergilerini yakından takip etmek moda ta-
sarımcılığına giriş seviyesi değildir. Moda tasarımcılığı, hikayesi ‘sonsuz’
olan bir dünya. Burada kendi hikayenizi kendiniz yaratma özgürlüğüne
sahipsiniz. Her an her şeyden ilham alabilir ve bunu görmek istediğiniz

with their ‘Look at the woman, not at the clothes’ vision and pre-

designers who worked with European brands for many years are using
their experiences at Ju İstanbul and make much appreciated designs by
combining different fabrics and playing with the fibers. In the previous
November Duygu Alptekin and Ahsen Uğurlu opened up a new Cou-
ture Showroom in Nişantaşı and made a special talk with our magazine
team.
‘Fashion Design is An Endless World’
The designers stated that they do not believe fashion design should be
a stereotype and said “In other words, wearing good clothes, having a
big closet or following the fashion magazines are not the entrance door
to fashion design. Fashion design is an ‘endless’ world. Here you have
the freedom to create your own story. You can get inspired by anything
at any moment and turn that into a form that you want to see. Getting
enchanted by the magic of colors and patterns is one of the most enjoy-
able parts of this work. At the end of the day, the design that you started
with a dream end at a woman’s body.’
‘Accessibility Should be Increased’
Alptekin and Uğurlu also talked about the differences between past and
the present in Turkey’s fashion industry. The designers stated that previ-
ously the collections were mostly focused on night gowns and said: “We
see designs that are educated, have broader imagination and vision. We
come across designers at current fashion weeks that are braver, more
assertive and most importantly that create their own worlds.” Alptekin
and Uğurlu stated that Turkish fashion world is at a much better posi-

sözlerle bahsetti; “Her tasarım öncesinde Ju İstanbul kadını kendini nasıl

utes to a designer’s global accessibility.” The designers stated that in or-
der to acquire a leader position it is necessary to increase the accessibility
and emphasized that Turkish fashion world is not very slow in doing it.
‘We Try to Prefer Local Suppliers’
Alptekin and Uğurlu prefer timeless pieces in making of their designs.
The designers explained the process of creating their collection as: “Be-
fore making of every design, we think about how a Ju Istanbul woman
wants to see herself and in what kind of a piece she would be comfort-
able but at the same time chic. While creating out designs by taking into
consideration of ‘Confident, determined and stylish women’ characters,
we put a romantic but feminine look in the forefront time to time.”
Recently, ready-to-wear brands started making collections with famous
designers. The designers made an assessment about the collaborations
of ready-to-wear brands and famous designers and said: “We like those
collaborations very much. Works that the brands and the designers
come together not only for economic profits but have matching DNAs
come out as good and very enjoyable collaboration designs.” Alptekin
and Uğurlu while creating their designs pay attention on choosing
products such as fabrics or accessories. Ju Istanbul designers explained
the criteria in determining their preferences in supplying those products

the local suppliers is always our priority.”

naklar her an elimizin altında.
How do you define being a fashion designer?
In this context how do you define yourself as
a designer?
I was born into fashion. It was a very import-
ant drive for me in that process to know that
even when I was very young that the job I want
to do was ‘Fashion Design’. Today, I owe the
place that I am at know to hundreds of fabrics,
thousands of hasps, efforts, pages of drawings
and a strong team that I always feel their sup-
port. So, fashion design is my life rather than
an occupation. Today, things we do reaches to
much bigger communities, the fact that I rep-
resent Turkey in different platforms coincides
with my style of self-expression. Because as a
designer, who was born in Turkey and worked,
produced in this beautiful country, I think it is
very important to promote and present the de-
signing capacity of here to much more people.
What has changed in Turkey in the fashion
sector from past to today?
Turkey, gained pace especially in the last ten
years in fashion design. Of course, in achieving
this, there are important contributions of ini-
tiatives such as MBFWİ, Turquality and Pro-
motion Groups. It is now easier to make your
name heard in Europe or in the world compared
to the past, for example the years that I present
my collection at Paris Couture Week, even if
you are an Istanbul based designer. There are
differences in sectoral context of course but
if you ask my opinion fashion sector is now a
whole. To able to reach to data through devel-
oped technology and faster communication op-
portunities affected every sector. We can now
access to magazines, books and online sources
about fashion any time. Today, we can watch
a fashion show in Paris online and shop from
global websites. Style suggestions that brands
give on social media, easy matching pieces
minimize the possible mistakes. So, along with
the whole world, branding process is truer and
more conscious in Turkey.
Do you think that Turkish fashion acquired
a leading position or can she achieve that?
In fact, there is a big progress in this road. May-
be Turkish fashion is still not where we want it
to be but I believe that this gap will decrease
very fast and Turkish fashion and designers will
come to better places in the future.

ediyorsunuz. Ruhuma iyi gelen her seyahatte be-
nim için en büyük ilham kaynağı.
Son dönemde hazır giyim markaları ünlü ta-
sarımcılarla ortak koleksiyonlar hazırlamaya
başladı. Siz bu konuya nasıl bakıyorsunuz?
Hazır giyim markalarının ünlü tasarımcılarla
çalışması nasıl bir etki yaratıyor sizce?
Tasarımcı marka iş birliklerine, modanın de-
mokratikleşmesi olarak bakıyorum. Tasarımcılar
kendi koleksiyonlarının yanı sıra markalarla iş
birlikleri yaparak daha ulaşılabilir koleksiyonlar
hazırlayıp, çok daha geniş kitlelere ulaşıyorlar.
Ayrıca bu tasarımcı açısından da oldukça öğretici
bir iş biçimi.
Zira kendi koleksiyonunuzu yaparken, tamamen
Dilek Hanif for Koton koleksi-
cih ediyorsunuz? Tercihinizi belirleyen kriter-
leriniz nelerdir?
Tabii benim için öncelik iç pazardan tedarik et-
mek. Ancak bazı detayları, aksesuarları ya da iş-
lemeleri burada yaptıramadığımız oluyor. Ya da
aradığımız spesifik bir kumaşı temin edemediği-
miz durumlar yaşıyoruz. O zamanlarda yabancı
üreticilerden de destek alıyoruz. Benim kriterim,
hayalimdeki tasarımı en doğru şekilde yaratma-
ma yardım edecek üreticilerle çalışmak.
Where do you get your inspirations in
preparing your collections?
Travelling is very important for me, you find
time to relax and get inspired only in some parts
of the year. My first preference in such situa-
tions is Göcek. My abroad preference is Italy.
Capri, Forte dei Marmi and Borgo Egnazia are
my favorite holiday spots. If you are a person
like me who is working too much and want to
just relax in your vacation, you prefer the places
that you know better, enjoy more and are good
for your soul than the places that you have nev-
er been to. So, a vacation that relaxes my soul is
mu biggest inspiration.
Recently ready-to-wear brands started to pre-
pare collections with famous designers. What
is your attitude towards this? What kind of
an effect does this collaboration of ready-to-
wear brands and famous designers create ac-
cording to you?
I see those collaborations of designers and
brands as democratization of fashion. Design-
ers, along with their own collections prepare
much more accessible collections in collabo-
ration with brands and reach to more people.
This is a very educational thing for the designer
as well.
Because while you are making your own collec-
tion you are totally free, but when you are mak-
ing it in collaboration with a brand you have to
follow its design codes and fabric preferences.
I did a very enjoyable collaboration with Ko-
ton for 4 seasons. The Dilek Hanif for Koton
Collection was appreciated and preferred by a
different community which usually does not
have access to our ready-to-wear collections. I
think it was a very enjoyable and successful col-
laboration.
Do you prefer local or foreign producers for
supplements such as fabrics and accessories?
What are your criteria for your preferences?
My priority is to supply them from the local
market. However, there are some details, ac-
cessories or embroideries that we cannot have
here. Or we go through situations that we can-
not have a specific type of fabric. Then we get
supports from foreign producers. My criterion
is to work with the producers that help me to
create the designs in my mind in the best way.

novative and dynamic soul following fashion and the sector as being Dagi.
Comfort and style are our indispensables. We care offering new style, new
cuts, new searches and different fabrics each season.
How have the market expectations changed at underwear sector and
how the trends have navigated?
Each day new products are presented at retail and fashion sectors, new firms
break into the market. Here, the way to get ahead at this hard environment
is to ‘become different’. In the next periods, we are predicting that nature-
friendly and animal welfare vegan products will become different at the sec-

How the Turkish underwear sector is in our day and which position
does it have globally?
Textile and ready-to-wear sectors are playing important roles at countries’
economic development process due to the value- added and export in-
comes created during the production period in the world. Textile and
ready-to-wear sectors in Turkey have important share for production, ex-
port and employment. Especially due to the fact that it is an export- based
sector, developments in world trade affect the sector. Turkish ready-to-
wear sector ranks as 6th biggest ready-to-wear export of the world. And
in textile and ready-to-wear export for EU countries, Turkey ranks as 2nd
after China. Therefore, we can say that ready-to-wear sector is important
for the economy of Turkey because of the position at production and
employment.
In which markets are you active abroad? Which markets do you target
to enter?
Our target is to proceed fast at the target markets with the foreign country
declinations. Gulf countries and Eastern Europe are our target markets. We
are aiming to grow by maintaining our home experience abroad as well.
How was 2017 for your firm?
2017 became a year that we carried out more growth than we ex-
pected. We can say it was year we speeded up turnover and going re-
tailing processes. We had 27% growth in our turnover. We reached
58 singular and 32 franchising stores in total by realizing 14 singular
and franchising stores.
What is your expectations and targets for 2018?
We started 2018 excitedly with the speed we caught in the previous
year. We are planning to open 10 stores in 2018 and then we will
crown our success we have maintained since 1984 with our target
reaching 100 stores.

tu. Franchise taleplerimiz çoğaldı. Müşteri portföyümüz genişledi.
2018 beklentileriniz ve hedefleriniz nelerdir?
Marc & Andre olarak 2018’de perakende mağazalarımızı arttırmayı
hedefliyoruz. Bu doğrultuda fizibilite çalışmalarımız devam ediyor.
you want me to give an example for healthy and functional products, we
are the single firm producing cap size in swimsuit in Turkey.
How the Turkish underwear sector is and which position it has globally?
Due to the fact that we cannot add enough branding and add enough
value- added to our product as being Turkey, we are slogging on at com-
petition. But this is a matter of process. We believe Turkish brands will be
able to enter competition with global markets in time.
In which markets are you active abroad? Which markets do you tar-
get to enter?
We are pretty active in Middle Europe, Scandinavian countries, Russia
and Ukraine. We have 35 stores in Russia. We are the main sponsor at
beauty competitions each year in Russia. Our brand value is so high
there. We have 15 stores in Ukraine. And we are working with many
department stores in Europe. In the next periods, we will concentrate on
our meetings with Arab countries.
How was 2017 for your firm?
2017 was hard for us too as it same for everyone. Nevertheless we can say
it was positive. As a result of withdrawal of many import brands from
Turkey in crisis environment, an opportunity formed for us. Demands
for franchising increased and our customer portfolio enlarged.
What is your expectations and targets for 2018?
As being Marc & Andre, we are targeting to increase our retail stores in
2018. Our feasibility activities are keeping on within this direction.

with 3D printing and says, “These boxes, in the form of 4 and 8
heads, extend the life of the heads by completely taking control of
electronic cards suffering from paint fuzziness. Users do not have to
make positional adjustments since the alignment adjustments of the
heads in the Mouvent Cluster are made during production.”
First In Textiles Digital Printing
Cenk Elkatip further suggests the positioning of the head in the di-
rection of fabric flow on the machine has never been done in textile
digital printing. “Accordingly, the width of the head group is less
than 10 cm, making the machine very compact. Thanks to this ar-
rangement, it is also possible to solve band traces that can be solved
by decreasing the machine capacity by only one way printing, which
is one of the biggest problems in digital printing, thus offering you
the opportunity to do double printing every time. Another inno-
vation is that the machines offer single pass solutions ranging from
200 square meters of multi-pass solutions up to 100 meters veils per
minute, with Mouvent Clusters placed one after the other or side by
side or side-by-side like lego.
Digital Printing Sets Its Eyes On Rotation Printing
Elkatip also states significant momentum has been recorded thanks
to the developments in digital textile printing from past to present
and explains the evolution of digital printing as follows: “I started
this business 14 years ago as a contract manufacturer. My first ma-

Tüm veriler her geçen yıl dijital baskının
klasik baskıdan pay alarak büyüyeceğini gösteriyor.”
Hedef Pazarın yüzde 30’una Hakim Olmak
Son olarak Mouvent’in 2018 yılına ilişkin pazar hedefleri konusunda
birisi olmak. Mouvent’in Türkiye’deki organizasyonu olarak bizim de
Türkiye pazarında ve bize bağlı Pakistan, Özbekistan, İran ve Orta Do-
ğu’daki hedeflerimizde bu doğrultuda.” sözlerine yer verdi.
chines were the machines that print half a meter in an hour, which
was not used by a company in France. For many years, digital print-
ing was seen as a boutique production. It has served as customised
productions or limited productions demanded by very luxurious
brands. Companies around Como in Italy gave birth to dozens of
companies who saw this need and were considered the center of dig-
ital printing. While this was supposed to go on like this, companies
like Zara, H & M, who offer quality products to the those people
with middle income discovered the digital printing. Digital printing
enabled them to increase their collections from 2 to 12 collections
and manufacture as many as they sell, which means zero stock. Pat-
terns limited with report dyes and colours limited with the number
of templates are now back in the past and the textile sector is now
filled with millions of colours and unlimited report dyes thanks to
digital printing. The only problem at this stage was the cost of pro-
duction, which was quickly solved by the fact that the dyestuffs were
rapidly becoming cheaper and the machines provide faster solutions
compared to rotation machines. Boutique digital printing produc-
tion started in Como now set its eyes on the throne of 30 billion
meters / year classical rotation and film druck printing. All the data
shows that digital printing will grow every year, taking share bit by
bit from the classic print. “
Goal Is To Possess 30% Of The Market
“Target of Jean Pascal Bobst, Board Member at BOBST, which is
one of the prominent partners of Mouvent, is to take minimum
30% shares in world textile sector and become one of the 3 top
companies in this sector, just like every other business he attempts.
As the organisation of Mouvent in Turkey, we also share the same
goal in our markets in Turkey and Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and
Middle East”, concludes Elkatip, providing insight into their mar-
ket targets for 2018.
