    The FSM grit wash unit has beendeveloped with three aims in mind:

    1. To achieve a very highseparation performance offinest grit particles

    2. To achieve the limit value calledfor in the document TASiedlungsabfall (residentialwaste) for depositing on aClass 1 dumping site withupstream coarse screen.

    3. Grit wash unit in dry and wet

    charged versions.

    The FSM grit wash unit consists of two basic items grit wash tank and discharge screw. Depending upon the effectiveness of the inlet scree- ning unit, the screening drum can be dispensed with. During develop- ment, special emphasis was placed

    on low water consumption at low admission pressure in the service water. The grit wash unit provides high performance coupled with low operating costs.

    Functionalprinciple:

    The grit/water mixture is fed in viathe inlet flange of the grit wash tank.

    Organic matter is held in suspensionand floated off while the grit is sedi-mented in the container. With theaddition of water, the sedimentedgrit is separated from the remainingorganic constituents using a stirringdevice and up-current technique.The grit is removed from the contai-ner, de-watered and discharged viaa discharge screw.

    With the addition of a bunker at theupstream side, the FSM grit wash unitcan be extended to become a re-ception station for sewer grit. If afractionating and washing drum ispositioned between the bunker andthe wash unit, the installation can beadditionally used for conditioningstreet sweepings.
