The quietness ofthe town is interrupted during the days of the festivity for San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph), when ittransforms itself into a crowded continuation of altars decorated in arabesque bread rolls and richin symbolic elements.

n important event is the Cene di San Giuseppe - Suppers of Saint Joseph, with the mealoffered to three poor people, symbolizing the Sacred Family, at an altar set up inside a structureresembling a small church, decorated with bread loaves, myrtle and laurel. Another significantappointment are the four Giornate Garibaldine - Garibaldi days which celebrate the proclamationof the dictatorship assumed by Giuseppe Garibaldi over the island in the name of King VittorioEmanuele II.

In the small but suggestive church of Sant'Annedda,one can admire the eighteenth century paintings by Fra Felice da Sambuca, depicting the life ofJesus Christ and the Crocefisso - Crucifix on the altar attributed to Milanti (XVII century).

n the slopes of a hill 442 m. above sea level, Salemi looks out onto a large picturesque valleyon which extend flourishing gardens, vast fields of wheat and green vines separated by ancientsheep carts, mule tracks and rivulets. The town is crowned by the woodland areas of MountPolizzo, from whose summit there are marvellous views east over the hilly countryside whichextends from Segesta over the Egadi islands to Mozia and Selinunte.

On the more vertical rocky walls the rockcarnation grows. Some natural elements survive which show the evolution of the scrub and theoriginal holm oak wood. There are protected species like the crested porcupine and the hare,among the birds it is easy to spot the hoopoe, the white wagtail and the yellow wagtail.

he church of S. Agostino has on its façade two niches with the statues of Saints Peter and Pauland connected to it is the monastery with its elegant cloister (XV century). The chiesa dei Gesuiti- church of the Jesuits dates back to the mid XVII century; encompassed in the structure of theex College is the Casa Santa di Loreto - Saintly House of Loreto, built in1705. The Norman castledates back to 1070. The ex Mother Church dedicated to San Nicola of Bari, rose possibly on thesite of a pre-existing pagan temple, which later became a mosque.

It was largely used for supporting walls and for structures which requiredparticularly refined techniques like doorways, corners, friezes and coats of arms. Still today thewomen with great skill and ability transform raw material into vivacious cloth rugs and intomasterpieces of lace and embroidery.

n Mokarta, there is an important ancient Sicanian settlement dating back to the XIII and Xcentury B.C. On Mount Polizzo there are the remains of a VIII - VI century B.C. Elymian city.Around 325 B.C. the acropolis was occupied by Punics, and later, between 950 and 1000 A.D.a small village developed. The small San Miceli basilica with mosaics and inscriptions is an importantPaleochristian structure from the IV - VI centuries A.D.
