Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 24, 2019

The Message

HOW DO WE RESPOND TO THE CRUCIFIED KING? In the scripture reading we hear from the “bad thief” and the “good thief.” The first is mocking Jesus, joining in with

Jesus’ persecutors, rejecting the idea of Jesus’ Kingship. The other acts out of humility, contrition, care for the other and a sense of faith in God. He is one of the few present who recognizes Jesus’ Kingship. And his faith is rewarded. No matter

how much we try we cannot save ourselves. But what we can do is invest in our future as the “good thief. Any commitment to our church community is an investment in the kingdom of God, a movement of love in the world.

Challenge for the Week:

Think about one insight that you got from our Response Ability Series and share it with someone.

PARISH OFFICE HOLIDAY HOURS The Parish Offices will close at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, November 27 and be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance

of the Thanksgiving holiday. The offices will reopen on Monday, December 2, at 8:30 a.m.

Thanksgiving Basket Guidelines

For those who are planning to prepare a basket of food to donate to those in need, there are a few guidelines to follow when putting it together. 1. Please bring the basket to St. Vincent’s school gym on Monday, November 25th between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. 2. Choose a turkey or roasting chicken appropriate for the family you wish to feed. 1-2 people: a chicken, turkey breast or small turkey 3-4 people: a 12 to 15 lb. turkey 5-6 people: a 16 to 18 lb. turkey 7 or more people: a 19+ lb. turkey 3. Make sure the bird is frozen and wrapped securely in newspaper and a brown bag. This will keep the bird cold and prevent thawing. Important: Please write the turkey size on the outside of the brown bag. 4. Include the “fixings” for a Thanksgiving dinner—rolls, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, vegetables, gravy, nuts, pies (not frozen) and some festive candies. 5. No frozen food except the turkey should be included in the box. No milk, butter or other dairy products that would spoil without refrigeration for several hours. 6. No alcoholic beverages please. 7. Place heavier foods on the bottom and crushable items (desserts, fruit, rolls, etc.) on the top. 8. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always welcome and appreciated. 9. Mark the outside of the box/basket indicating the number of people it is designed to feed.

A list of the contents of the box taped to the outside would also be appreciated.

2019 Bishop's Annual Appeal

"For I Was Hungry . . ." This time of year, as we come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, please consider making a gift to the Bishop's annual Appeal as a way to give thanks for our many blessings. Each year, tens of thousands of people in profound need seek out the services of our Catholic Charities and, with the help for the Bishop's annual appeal, they find an open door and a compassionate response. Please make a pledge to our annual appeal today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2019appeal.org.

Stewardship

Gracious and loving God, As the autumn season continues its transformation; and the days become shorter, the earth cooler; as we anticipate joining family and friends in joyful celebration on Thanksgiving Day, we pause to give You thanks and praise for the abundant blessings You have bestowed upon us: For life and health, safety and comfort, food and nourishment, we are sincerely grateful. Through your Spirit, open our hearts so that we may be even better stewards of these rich and unmerited gifts. Show us how to be a blessing for the poor, sick, lonely and all who suffer. And help us nurture the gift of faith, revealed to us by your Son, Jesus Christ, our greatest gift, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

COMMISSIONING OF LITURGICAL MINISTERS

We are blessed at our Parish with so many people who participate in the many ministries and programs available at St. Vincent’s: Social Outreach, Community Presence, Catechists, Retreat Teams and Spirituality Groups. This weekend, we will commission those parishioners who serve at our weekend and daily liturgies as Minister of Holy Communion and Readers. We are blessed with people from many ages, backgrounds and nationalities. These ministers enhance our experience of worship and dedicate themselves to service at liturgy. We offer our prayers and gratitude to the following ministers.

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

If Thanksgiving is right around the corner, then Christmas cannot be far behind. Work is underway for our annual Christmas outreach. Each year we have had a generous and warm response to the poor and struggling

in our community, and throughout our Diocese. Because of the generosity of so many of you, we are able to bring some of Christ’s light into the lives of many. There are a variety of ways that you can participate if you are interested.

- Giving Tree: A Christmas tree will be in the church vestibule with gift requests on it beginning Thanksgiving weekend. Anyone interested can take a tag, purchase the gift requested and return it when you come to Mass or by dropping it off at the Parish Office, wrapped and with the tag attached by December 15. These gifts go to local families, to Diocesan or county agencies and to poor parishes. - Adoption: If you wish to consider anonymously “adopting” a family or individuals to give them a special Christmas, please call. The family or individual’s needs/requests, and instructions for drop off will be forwarded to you. - Donations: Food cards or financial donations are always welcome. Please call or drop a note to the Social Ministry in the Sunday collection. - Volunteer: Help is always welcomed and greatly appreciated because ‘many hands’ really do ‘make light work’. If you are interested in volunteering some time towards the Christmas Outreach or if you have any questions or suggestions please contact Jeanne Buckley on 201-988-4246 or via email at [email protected].
