The Benefits
•About one third of the space in landfills is taken up with organic waste from our yards and kitchens
•Compost helps cleanup (remediate) contaminated soil
•Compost helps prevent pollution
•Using compost can reduce the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides. It serves as a marketable commodity and is a low-cost alternative to standard landfill cover and artificial soil amendments.
•Affects the life style decisions made by future citizens of the community
•Empower students (gives them a specific action they can take to help the earth)
•Teaches teamwork and interdisciplinary education
•Compost can be used as an alternative to mulch or other Compost can be used as an alternative to mulch or other plastic coverings-can be used for the memorial gardenplastic coverings-can be used for the memorial garden
