Norma McCorvery, known as Jane Roe, was a pregnant woman from Texas who wished to obtain an abortion. After being denied this, she sued, saying that this violated the 14th Amendment.

In 1971, Roe goes against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County, who enforced a Texas law saying that abortion is only acceptable if the mother is in danger and cannot carry the baby safely.

On January 22, 1973, The U.S Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, affirms the legality of a woman’s right to have an abortion under the fourteenth amendment of the Constitution.

However, a state could choose whether or not to allow abortion after the first trimester. As a result, the laws of 46 states were effected.

This changed women’s history forever. Now, women are able to receive a safe abortion at places like Planned Parenthood. However, they often are looked down on in society by the “pro life” side.
