Project
- Design a new invertebrates gallery for the Royal Alberta Museum.
While working for Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership, I spent a year designing two galleries for a new museum in Edmonton, Canada. The concept for the Bug Gallery is for it to be an "art gallery for bugs," a place where the live animals are the focus and there is not a lot of additional scenic elements to distract the visitors.
Project Team: JoAnn Secor (Principal, Director of Museum Services), Scott W. Briggs AIA (Senior Associate, Museum Services, Project Manager), Roy Lorieo (Exhibit Designer)
Project Duration: 12 months (design), 6 months (fabrication and installation), to open Fall 2017.

Look & Feel - Hive
In the center of the room, there will be a small gathering area for 15 visitors. It was frequently refered to as "the hive" because of the activity in the space. I took inspiration for overlapping organic forms that were also visually permeable.

Hive Development
There were many iterations of the Hive before we settled on the final design. Each horizontal rib had internal lighting, to make the structure glow. There are shelves on the inside and outside that support terraria, interactive kiosks and graphics.

Look & Feel - Terrarium
Once we had settled on the direction of "an art gallery for bugs" I looked for examples of the cleanest, simplest ways to present the terraria and aquaria, while giving as much visual access to the habitats.

Typical Terrarium
The bugs were grouped in sections by where they can be found in the world and groups by traits (e.g. how they hunt, how they mate or their use of camolfage).

Tropical Forests Group
This is a view of the "Ambush Predators" group, showing two terraria, an interactive kiosk and a story panel with environmental graphics behind. We used environmental graphics to pull together the five thematic sections in the space.

Look & Feel - Lighting
From the beginning, these images focused the design of the gallery. To create a warm and subdued environment, I looked for opportunities to light the exhibitry from the inside. This allowed the animals, that are usually hiding or camoflaged, to be spotlit for the visitors.
