Here you’ll find everything from virgin beaches where turtles nest and secluded island shores to shallow waters for children and high-octane waves for the most seasoned of surfers, who can enjoy hanging ten all year long.
Bahía de Banderas, Compostela, San Blas, Santiago Ixcuintla and Tecuala: five municipalities that make up the Riviera Nayarit. And this is where you’ll find over 30 beaches—indeed, there’s something for everyone!
The most spectacular is Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach), also known as Playa del Amor (Love Beach), tucked away inside one of the Islas Marie-tas. Then there’s the longest beach in Mexico, second longest in Latin America, third in the Americas and sixth in the world is Novillero, located in Tecuala and gorgeous at 56 miles (90 kilometers) in length.
Every surfer dreams about year-round waves—it’s a dream that comes true in the Riviera Nayarit. The most powerful wave, the Stoner Point Break in San Blas, is only around in the summer, but there are lots more. The most popular is in Sayulita, where thousands of people learn to stand on a board for the very first time. There’s another that’s over half a mile (1 kilometer) long—in fact, for years it was the longest one in the Guinness Book of World Records. This wave originates in Las Islitas and travels the length of Matanchén Bay in San Blas.
For the past few years the Riviera Nayarit has had the most Certified Clean Beaches in Mexico. It’s also home to Nuevo Vallarta Norte, accredited with the Blue Flag international certificate.
There are small bays in the Riviera Nayarit that shelter swimmers as well as open sea, which provokes those stronger waves. This is why, there are many other sports you can enjoy besides surfing, including stand up paddle, kayaking, jet surfing, fly boarding and kite surfing, among others.
Then again, can hang out on a beach in Punta Mita or Flamingos steps from a hotel with every service at your beck and call, or, you can choose to put your camping gear to good use and fall asleep under the moon to the sound of mermaids splashing and the murmurs of the jungle. The choice is yours.

This is a very quiet town to live in, but the adrenaline bubbles up in the sports that take place in its surroundings.
For example, Vista Paraíso in Rancho la Montalbeña o ers tours on ATVs or horseback, they even o er horseback riding lessons. And its zip-line is amazing!
One of the most recent services in the region is Archery Experience México, which o ers traditional as well as “gotcha” style archery.
Can’t miss beaches that bring you closer to nature include Punta Negra and Carreyeros—highly recommended!
KM5 Surf Bar & Restaurant is another must, it’s totally laidback and a great place for a beer after an adventure-filled day. And Mirador Restaurant in Litibú is perfect for sunset dinners.
Take the plunge!
The longest zip-line in the Riviera Nayarit is at Vista Paraíso. The sweeping view from the mountains of Higuera Blanca encompasses all of Punta de Mita all the way to the Islas Marietas

This is the coolest microdestination in the Riviera Nayarit thanks to its colorful, cosmopolitan, hippie chic style, so very inclusive and full of life. It was thanks to these unique qualities that it received the designation of Pueblo Mágico (Magical Village) on behalf of the Federal Government.
If you come to Sayulita you’re going to have to leave your diet behind, because you won’t want to miss out on the local cuisine. The most interesting meal has to be the chocobanas at the Chocobana Breakfast and the frozen fruit treats and tropical fruit drinks at Wakika are refreshing, but if you’re looking for something elegant in the dinner department, head to Don Pedros, right on the beachfront. Paninos is the place to go for the tastiest bread and you can find a great bottle of wine at the Sayulita Wine Shop. Oh, and don’t forget the shrimp tacos!
The good thing is, you can burn o the calories by renting an SUP board at Stand Up Paddle Mexico or a sur oard at Luna A ul Surf and taking a class. By the way, did you know the very best SUP surfers in Mexico are from around here?
And as for accommodations, you’ll find awesome villas and small hotels in the mountains, although camping out for a night (or several) is a total hit.
Here the local artists will surprise you with their unique creations, where they mix the traditional with the contemporary. Musts include shopping at Esto Es México and Revolución del Sueño. Or, if you’re looking for some ama ing Huichol traditional art, you’ll find the best at the Galería Tanana.
urfing and tand p addle are the favored activities on these waters, where thousands of people each year get up on a board to ride a wave for the first time in their lives.

San Francisco, The Cultural Capital
A little over a decade ago San Pancho began a cultural, ecological, environmental and artistic revolution that changed the town’s history and now o ers one more tourist attraction for visitors.
The civil associations that make up the Las Fábricas de San Pancho Cultural Center were the foundation of the cultural change in San Pancho. It all began with the Entre Amigos Community Center, a place that o ers games, recycling, a library and free classes for the local children plus all sorts of fun activities. Your kids will love it!The Colectivo San Pancho is comprised of a group of artists who work on diverse cultural projects in the Bodega 3. There’s also the Bodega Teatro, where they practice the performing arts. The Bodega Circo is home to the Children’s Circus, created by Gilles Ste-Croix, co-founder of Cirque Du Soleil, where kids and youths learn the circus arts and put on a yearly show. The Alianza Jaguar works in pro of jaguar conservation and its ecosystem. Every time you visit these bodegas, or warehouses, you know that in order to change the world, all you need to do is start with your own neighborhood. The Plaza del Sol is the meeting point for festivals. Here you’ll find a mural composed entirely of bottle caps—yes, that’s right: the creators of this unique artistic expression collect the caps and transform them into art. La Perla and Las Palmas—both beachside restaurants—are quite good. Ask for the tostada de atún (tuna on a crispy tortilla) or the traditional aguachile verde (shrimp), cured in lime juice with red onions, cilantro and spicy chile. In Las Palmas they also sell red and black aguachile, each spicier than the last.

The La Patrona Polo Club is the only one of its kind in the Riviera Nayarit. As unique as the Lo de Perla orchid garden, a 1.24 mile path in the jungle full of nature. Prefer to putt? Check out the Las Huertas Golf Club and practice your swing on this 9-hole course.

San Blas sums up the very essence of the Riviera Nayarit with a touch of history that dates back to the 18th century—and before!
San Blas, el Puerto HistóricoSan Blas, The Historic Port
When you arrive, head up to the Cerro de Basilio (Basilio Hill) for a visit to La Contaduría, considered in past centuries the most important business, goods and cultural exchange crossroads between the Americas, Asia and Europe—there’s a museum for you to enjoy, as well as some petroglyphs. Continue your tour at the Muelle de San Blas, the local dock, and ask about the infamous La Loca (The Madwoman). Other attractions include the “U” de Pescadores (Fishermen’s Inner Harbor), the Escala Náutica, the Casa de la Cultura (Cultural Arts Center), and the Iglesia Antigua (Old Church).
Become one with nature with a visit to La Tobara, followed by a stop at the Cocodrilario “Keikari”—you’ll be sure to see several species of flora and fauna. n your way back to the sea, stop to take a peek at the crocs in the estuary, then continue on to the Stoner Surf Camp to rent a board and hit the waves.
Take to the water for a visit to Piedra Blanca at the Isla del Rey, also known as Tatéi Haramara—“the place where the soul and the spirit are born”—a sacred space for the Wixárica people. Seek out an encounter with the whale shark, the largest fish in the world and one you can swim with peacefully.
Chef Betty Vázquez, the Riviera Nayarit’s Culinary Ambassador, is all about food that goes from “sea to table.” Experience oysters fresh from the waters of Aticama, taste the lisas tatemadas (roasted fish Nayarit-style) at Los Cocos, or a delicious aguachile (shrimp cooked in lime juice with chile and onions) in Santa Cruz de Miramar. Visit the beachside restaurants at El Borrego beach, Matanchén or Las Islitas, where you can try the local banana bread or the smoked Marlin or Sailfish.
