About Saraswati College of Engineering
SCOE is a leading Engineering Institute, Established in the year 2004
by Hon. Prithviraj Deshmukh and Mrs. Vrushali Deshmukh. The
college is Approved by AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to University
of Mumbai, India. Recently it has been accredited by NAAC. The
college campus is beautifully landscaped in a lush green stretch of land
spread across Kharghar Hills. SCOE offers UG Engineering Courses in
Civil, Mechanical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer,
Automobile and Information Technology. SCOE also offers PG courses
in Civil, Mechanical, Electronics & Telecommunication and Computer
Engineering. The college is established with a purpose of imparting
state of art technical education to aspiring engineers of 21st Century.
Efforts are taken by enhancing the employability and skills of students
to bridge gap between Industry and Institute.
About Civil Engineering Department
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 2004. It is one
of the reputed departments in Mumbai University. The Department is
having eight laboratories viz. Strength of Material, Concrete
Technology, Surveying, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering,
Transportation Engineering, Applied Hydraulic and Fluid Mechanics
and Environment Engineering.
The department started in 2004 with intake of 60 students. During its
journey of development in subsequent years, the intake of Civil
Engineering increased to 120 in first shift and 60 in second shift. The
Post Graduate Program [M.E.] in the department began in year 2013 on
a regular basis in the stream of Structural Engineering. The current
faculty strength is 24 in first shift and 10 in second shift. As per the
vision of the department the highest emphasis is given on research and
development activities. Therefore the department is active in
consultancy and research work.
About the Workshop
In order to meet effectively and systematically the needs of structural
safety and be in tune with the modern development in constructions,
Indian Standard codes of practice are periodically assessed. It isrequired to allow certain corrections/guidelines or techniques to enable
more efficient design schemes. These revisions have multiple impacts
on the design and construction practices and are thus very important to
be understood. It is a well known fact that the seismic considerations
have become explicitly important in the modern construction due to
the devastating effects of the earthquakes that have been recorded and
highlighted in the past century. In order to overcome deterioration and
to provide structural
safety to the existing structures, retrofitting techniques are used. Proper
retrofitting must include identifications of inadequacies in designing
and detailing, degradation of material with time and use, and damage
due to earthquake or other catastrophe. Thus the retrofit engineer is
expected to estimate the deficiency resulting from all the above sources
and to suggest a retrofit scheme to make up for the deficiencies and
demonstrate the techniques used for retrofitting of RC and steel
structures, so that the structures can withstand earthquake forces and
also overcome structural deficiencies.
This workshop has been designed to retrospect Indian Standard code
revisions in recent years along with aspects of retrofitting of RC and
steel structures. The eminent speakers will cover considerations for
seismic design and detailing of RC structures based on recent revisions
in relative Indian standard codes of practices. The focus of the
workshop is thus to demonstrate the impact of revisions in IS codes on
actual design practices of RC and steel structures. The workshop is
mainly divided into three main themes such as firstly a thorough
discussion on revision of IS codes used in design and detailing of RC
and steel structures, Secondly the impact of revised IS code on the
future analysis and design of structures and finally an exclusive session
on the retrofitting of existing structures.
Objectives
To create a platform for academia-industry interaction and make
practicing engineers aware of the modern technologies related to IS
code revisions and its impact on design and construction practices along
with retrofitting and rehabilitation techniques.
