Baldassare Cossa - Antipope John XXIII

Page 5: Renaissance magazine

Baldassare Cossa lived a great life and accomplished many things. In his forty nine years were full of events leading up to his death. His rise was inspirational, he proved that starting with nothing and making it to the top is not impossible. Cossa started with nothing and rose to the top with the help of a family who saw his potential. Baldassare Cossa was his name and along with the help of the wealthy banking family known as the Medici’s, Cossa was able to rise to the top to become known now as one of our former Popes, Antipope John XXIII.

Cossa made many accomplishments in his life, but his biggest would have to be the turn around he had in his life, he was pirate with no money breaking laws to make a living. But he went to the Medici Bank in Florence asking for a loan so he could turn his life around a pursue a career in the Roman Catholic Church as a priest. His goal eventually worked and his made his way up to the position of Cardinal, Bishop, and finally Pope.

The Pope had many things in life he could have changed. If he could change one thing in the world, it would be the power and the wealth all around him, so he and the Medici’s would have even more power in their favor. He and his associates were more concerned about the church because that is where all of their power is.The Medici Family and Cossa were in favor of Machiavelli because like him they also want to keep the power in their favor in the Roman Catholic Church. He was more influenced by the Roman Catholic Faith, and by the Medici Family, because these two parts of his life are what gave him his power so it is what influences him. They do not believe in heaven on earth or a perfect day because that would have to be earned in the afterlife because of all of the sinners in the world. Balassare’s greatest competition would be humanists and their ideas because with the rise in number of humanists the less people are seriously involved in the Roman Catholic Church where all of his power is.

Many things stand out about Cossa. What makes him different is the fact that he was more for religion while most people at this time were more abou the here and now, and supporting other humanist believes. Most people in this time and even now would most likely not know that originally Antipope John XXIII was a pirate, who was scavenging and sinning to make a living. His greatest strength was also his weakness, his strength is that he has the Medici’s banks and money to support his power. But this comes with a weakness of him having to rely on them so if they started to not support him he would have no power and lose everything. If Cossa could change anything about himself he would change his past and try to make more accomplishments before he became the Pope.

Cossa had forty nine years of life well lived. He had many accomplishments, and held great power until the time of his death in December of 1419. He rose up with the help of the Medici family, starting with nothing, and rising to what we know him as today.

Death of Cosimo de Medici, August 1st, 1464

On this date Cosimo di Giovanni degli Medici passed away. He was a leader of the Renaissance, perhaps the most important and significant. Cosimo was considered the “Father of the country” because he lead all of these major improvements during this time of Rebirth of the Greek and Roman culture. Before his death he suffered from arthritis, gout, and bladder problems. When he passed away he was not at home, he was at Villa Medici Careggi. He went alone, without his wife, she was upset that he was going alone and even more so when she found out that her husband would not be returning. There were consequences from his death because he was leading all these advancements of the Renaissance, so without him things would be changed. There would not be as many advancements in any aspect of the Italian life and all the advancements of the Renaissance would be slowed down. He was a key part of why the Renaissance came to be so without him others were forced to step up to the plate such as Piero the Gouty who was Medici’s successor.

You may have 5, 6, or even 7 siblings but 17 siblings? Not many people have 17 siblings or even half siblings but Leonardo da Vinci did have 17 half siblings. Although his parents were never married they did have many kids with others partners. Leonardo da Vinci is a very successful architect and inventor and he is very well known by many. Not only is he

an architect and an inventor but he is also a scientist, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, painter, sculptor, botanist, musician and writer. He is a very busy man who always has a lot of work to do. Da Vinci can be found working on his art one day but the next he can be off working on new inventions. One of da Vinci’s greatest accomplishments is the “Mona

Lisa” which he just completed last year. The Mona Lisa has an intriguing smile that people love which is part of the reason why it has become so popular. The “Last supper” is also a very impressive piece of art. Leonardo never got a complete education past basic reading, writing, and math skills. Leonardo wanted to change the world and so far he has done an

amazing job. He supports the idea of humanism as he wanted to create new things to help improve the world so we can be more advance in the things we do. He left the medieval times behind and their idea of religion being the answer to

everything and supported more self-achievement and science. Many new inventions were made and still are being made and he has and still is providing many pieces of art for the pleasure of others. One of Leonardo’s greatest weaknesses is

that he doesn’t spend his time well. He has many unfinished pieces of work because he is not able to use his time well. He can be working on art one day and then the next coming up with new inventions. One of his greatest strengths is that he is

confident in himself and does not care what others say or think about him which enables him to create masterpieces without a care in the world of what others say. His interest in science represents the Renaissance because during the

medieval times science was not as well accepted as it is today and he supports self-achievement which is individualism, but during medieval times religion was just the answer to everything. You wouldn’t try to accomplish things by yourself.

Leonardo da Vinci’s greatest competitor is Michelangelo. He too is a very successful artist and sculpture. He made the statue David which is one of the most outstanding statues. He is different from other people however, because of how many different occupations he has. Not only is he creating masterpieces but he is also creating many different amazing

inventions! I am writing about Leonardo da Vinci today because his work needs to be seen and known by the world. His work should not go unknown because he is a very successful man, maybe you would even say he is a Renaissance man.
