Power to the candidatesThe flexibility of the UK labour market has played a key part in the continued recovery of the economy. This flexibility has helped the UK maintain higher employment levels than most other economies across Europe, feeding economic confidence whilst helping to stimulate the ongoing recovery. Employment is now hitting record levels, and as such the market has ‘tightened’, placing skilled jobseekers in a stronger position. This means employers and recruiters must be increasingly flexible and act decisively to attract and secure the best talent available.

In 2016 we expect to see salary levels continue to improve, as employers respond to these market conditions in order to both retain and attract the best talent. Over the past year we have seen both an increase in counter offers from existing employers, and an increase in multiple offers for strong candidates, invariably leading to some employer disappointment. These are both indicators of a strong, candidate driven, market. We are advising our candidates to think very carefully about the offers they receive, and to weigh up all the elements to ensure that they are making the correct decisions, looking not only at salary package, but overall opportunity to achieve greater career fulfilment. Executive salary levels in the private sector will increase at a faster pace than the public sector as the Government continues to squeeze budgets. However, there is hope for more flexibility in wages within the public sector, as regional devolution is set to give regions greater control over their own budgets.

We are seeing growth in demand across most industry sectors throughout the UK, though certain sectors continue to show greater levels of buoyancy.

Looking forward2016 is set to be an interesting year as global issues and the economic situation in Europe look like they may have an impact on the UK labour market. The flexibility of our economy will be tested. Despite these challenges, prospects for skilled candidates and flexible, enlightened employers are good.

With the overall jobs market remaining strong, the market for good candidates will continue to be intense. Skilled and flexible candidates will find plenty of opportunities to further their careers by working with professional recruiters. The professional recruiter also has a clear part to play on behalf of the employer, providing expertise around candidate expectation and availability as the market continues to evolve and develop.

In 2016 we expect to see salary levels continue to improve, as employers

respond to these market conditions in order to

both retain and attract the best talent.

Job Market Overview

Investment in youthThese strong indicators for the labour market offer good news for young people joining the UK workforce, or taking early steps in their careers. With so many opportunities available for those with good skills and experience we are seeing more and more forward-thinking organisations switch on to the fact that they may not secure candidates with the exact experience they require and realise the long term benefits of investing in young talent.

The Government is also focussed in this area, both through their much publicised Apprenticeships programme and changes through the introduction of the Living Wage. As the UK economy continues to improve the future for the next generation of UK workers is considerably brighter than it has been over recent years.

The year aheadIn today’s jobs market, employers must be flexible, decisive and fast if they want to attract the best people. Candidates are more willing to take a risk and make a move, and they are not always simply looking to improve their wage package. Increased responsibility, or opportunity are often high on the list of requirements. Home working, or flexibility of hours can also be vitally important, particularly with many more working parents within the workforce. In many sectors, but particularly the hi-tech sector, larger companies must realise that they are often competing with new start-ups able to offer shares and ‘alternative’ work environments. To compete effectively they must stress the breadth of opportunity together with additional corporate benefits including healthcare, pensions and childcare support. It is also important for organisations, however strong their offering, not to forget the importance of a good candidate experience through the recruitment process if they want to be successful. Here, a trusted professional recruitment partner has an essential role to play. The coming year is set to be just as exciting as the last, with new businesses and more industries getting a chance to build on the solid foundations set in 2015.

The coming year is set to be just as exciting as the last, with new businesses and more industries getting a chance to build on the solid foundations set in 2015.
