How do we recruit as fraternities and sororities?   What are we looking for when we select men and

women for our chapters?   Do we sell fun and have other expectations?   Are we who we say we are during recruitment?   Are we honest with who we are?

Page 3: Recruitment, Respect And Ritual 2

How do we teach respect within our fraternities and sororities?

What does it mean to have someone earn their letters/membership?

What is meant by brotherhood or sisterhood?   Are we REALLY values based organizations or

do we just say that because that is what everyone wants us to be?

Page 4: Recruitment, Respect And Ritual 2

Do we understand Ritual?   Do we teach Ritual and what it means?   Do we explain the real meaning of who we are and what role

Ritual plays during the new member education process?   Do we hold ourselves and our members

accountable to our Vows & Promises?   Does our Brotherhood and Sisterhood start

with our Ritual?

Tips from Mari Ann Callais

Thoughts to Ponder by Mari Ann…

o Make certain that your new member educator is educated and is a memberwho can teach the new members – may want to consider having a newmember education team

o Be selective about who you give the privilege of being big sisters/big brothers– they are key to the new members’ development

o Really TEACH Ritual – it does matter!!o Challenge your members to evaluate what they spend ($) on little sisters/little

brothers – encourage them to help buy their Badge – don’t miss out on a bigsister because she can not afford it

o Read Bound By A Mighty Vow (new book from Kappa Alpha Theta)o Visit your national headquarterso Visit the university or college where your national organization was foundedo Visit the your national organization’s websiteo Examine the culture of your chapter

What are things that you think need to be stopped; things that youneed to start; things that you need to keep

o Hazing has been a concern on many campuses – have a discussion about thepractices of your chapter and are you in compliance with your nationalpolicies, the law, and do you just care about one another…

o Encourage your members to wear your badge… ”Your badge is an outward symbol of an inner commitment.”

Maureen Syring, Delta Gammao Get to know your Founders – they were really amazing women and men!o Love your sorority or fraternity with all of your heart! You have been given a

special gift – don’t take it for granted!o Make certain that your sorority or fraternity experience is FUN and challenge

always for your sisters or brothers to truly live their lifetime commitment!
