Congratulations to Dr. Sansanee Noiskran, a researcher from Department of Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital who participated in the joint research on “Dengue fever” and received the Loreal Research Award for “Women in Science 2012” from Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha on 25 December 2012 at Erawan Grand Hotel, Bangkok. Loreal Research Fund for “Women in Science” begun in 2002 from the collaboration of Loreal (Thailand) and UNESCO. Today, the program celebrates the 10th anniversary with a total of 40 awards given.

Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University congratulates Associate Professor Pongparadee Chaudakshetrin, the first Thai physician to be recognized at the 14th World Congress on Pain, Milan, Italy. Her prominent achievements include pain relief practices and training courses, held at both domestic and regional levels—primarily in the developing countries. Moreover, she also serves as the Honorary Member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).

The Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz is an annual event, where medical students from various institutes enter a quiz competition to test their knowledge and proficiencies in the physiology. The 11th IMSPQ 2013 was held at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 28-29 August 2013. Fac-ulty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University attended the competition for the fourth consecutive year. This time, the team was led by the thriving spirits of the chosen 3rd year physiology students, accompanied by our accomplished advising professors. Among

The competition was held for 2 days, beginning with the writing test on the first day. This first round was completed individually by all participants in order to determine the next 40 contestants with the highest scores to participate in the next round on the second day. Siriraj team was able to progress to the next round. On the 2nd day, contestants were asked a set of questions individually per team. Siriraj team was able to progress to the finale, among the remaining 3 universities, and won the 2nd place in the 11th IMSPQ 2013. With Mahidol University further ascending to the international level, our students and professors were able to establish a good relationship with those from other universities, thus exchanging valuable experiences.

Thai Neuroscience Society Conference 2013” from July 29-August 3 2013, at the meeting hall on the 1st floor, His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2007 Building (SiMR). The purpose of the IBRO-APRC Associate School is to introduce updated concepts of neuroscience to junior graduate students (in PhD or MSc course) from Asia-Pacific Regions. Students will learn how principles of neuroscience are established, from the generation of hypothesis and the designs of experiments to the interpretation of data.

Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, in collaboration with National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT), Vietnam, held the first joint conference after the MOU was signed between both institutes last year. The event was arranged as a 2-day visit of the delegates from NIHBT led by Professor Nguyen Anh TRI, MD., PhD. - the Director of NIHBT and the President of Vietnam Thalassemia Association. They were welcomed by Dr. Chanin Limwongse, the Director of Siriraj Thalassemia Center and Associate Professor Dr. Vip Viprakasit, Vice-Director of Siriraj Thalassemia Center on August 1, 2013.

On August 2, 2013, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, held a “Siriraj-NIHBT Joint Conference 2013: From Care to Cure.” After the opening remarks by Assistant Professor Visit Vamvanit, Director of Siriraj Hospital, the conference progressed with a discussion on a number of practical topics including: “Current Epidemiology of Thalassemia in Vietnam,” “Current Thalassemia Management in Vietnam,” “Update on Blood Transfusion and Iron Chelation Therapy,” “Managing Thalassemia Complications,” “Stem Cell Transplantation for Thalassemia,” “Prevention and Control for Thalassemia,” and “Gene Therapy for T h a l a s s e m i a . ” A t t e n d i n g p ro m i n e n t professors and lecturers were from both sides, namely, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu HA, Head of Thalassemia Unit, NIHBT, Dr. Le Xuan HAI, Head of Department of Immunology, Assistant Professor Noppadol Siritanaratkul, Chief of Hematology Division, Department of Medicine, and Assistant Professor Kleebsabai Sanpakit, Chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Division, Department of Pediatrics, Siriraj Hospital.

Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, held the academic conference on “Translational Immunology: Application in Medicine” from September 4-6, 2013, upon their 20th anniversary celebration. The conference was held at Adityadhornkitikhun Conference Hall, 7th floor, Syamindra Building, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, with the objective to emphasize the medical applications in the education and practices of immunology. In this special occasion, two special lectures were given; the first lecture was on “The origin of the first department of immunology in Thailand” by Emeritus Professor Suttipant Sarasombath, and the second lecture was on “Suttipant Sarasombath Honorary Lecture 2013 on the Evolution of the Immune System” by Emeritus Professor Dr. Stitaya Sirisinha.

On July 16 2013, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital joined hands with Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology (KSMCB) led by Hyung-Lae Kim, the President of KSMCB and Professor Prasit Watanapa, Deputy Dean and Director of Siriraj Medical School, and Professor Dr. Ruengpung Sutthent, Deputy Dean for Research, to host a joint conference. This conference was held to establish research collaboration on Molecular and Cell Biology between both institutes.

During June 3 - 28, 2013, 2 medical students from Peking Univer-sity Third Hospital, China; Miss Chen Lu and Mr. Shaoqiang Liu attended the clinical rotations at the Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics Surgery, and Department of Surgery.

During 5 - 23 August, 2013, Mr. Rangsimun Low, a 2nd year medical student from Faculty of Medicine Marsaryk University, Czech Republic, undertook an internship in General Nursing Care at Nursing Department, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.

During 1 July - 2 August, 2013, Miss Phatchrawan Tuntirungrojchai, a Thai medical student from University of Liverpool, England attended clini-cal elective programs at Department of Surgery and Department of Emer-gency Medicine.

During August 1 - 31, 2013, Miss Precious Fedeline Herrera Kim, a 5th year medical student from St. Luke’s Medical College, the Philippines attended a clinical elective at Depart-ment of Dermatology.

During August 13 to September 6, 2013, Miss Sophie Young and Miss Louise Cloney, medical students from University of Sheffield, England attended clinical elective programs at the Department of Dermatology and Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Myint Myint Than from Myan- mar, attended a short training program on Advanced Technology in HLA Typing at Department of Transfusion Medicine, from June 17 - 28, 2013. The training was supported by World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Yin Yin Thu, Dr. Yamon Myo, and Mr. Htay Aung from Myanmar attended a short training program on Basic Cytogenetic Techniques at Siriraj Central Cytogenetic Laboratory, Office of Research and Development, Siriraj Hospital, from June 17 - 21, 2013. The training was supported by World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Kaley Tash and Dr.Michael Shafique from Duke University at-tended a Residency Training Pro-gram (Clinical Electives) at Depart-ment of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Department of Preventive and Social Medicine and Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine from July 1 to September 20, 2013.

Dr. Marlar Thin from Myanmar attended a fellowship training program in Pain Management at Siriraj Pain Clinic, Department of Anesthesiol-ogy, Siriraj Hospital. The training was supported by World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).

Congratulations to Ms. Myat Thazin from Bahosi Infertility Center, Myanmar upon her completion of a short training course in Assisted Reproductive Techniques from June 3 - 28 2013, at Division of Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Ms. Naw Htoo Htoo Pwe from Bahisi Infertile Center, Myanmar completed the short training course in Assisted Reproductive Techniques from May 1 - 31 2013, at the Division of Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

On June 25, 2013 Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of the “International Conference in Medicine and Public Health 2013” held by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. The conference was organized under the concept of “Healthy Society Beyond Frontiers” and lasted 5 days from June 24 - 28, 2013.

ICMPH is a collaborative network between Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Ministry of Public Health, and the Rockefeller Foundation. The year 2013 was the Centennial of the establishment of Rockefeller Foundation, and the 90th anniversary of the official collaborations between the three main organizations. The legacy began in 1921, through the integrity of Prince Mahidol, who represented the Siamese government in negotiation with the Rockefeller Foundation with the aims to elevate medical education in Thailand to a collegiate level. The Rockefeller Foundation had agreed upon this request and provided assistance by appointing numerous medical personnel to establish an academic and clinical structure of this particular discipline -- Professor A.G. Ellis who was known as the architect of Pathological Studies in Thailand was also among them. Moreover, the foundation also sponsored Thai medical and public health practitioners to be trained abroad. Moreover, the foundation provided funding in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand and His Royal Highness’s personal donation for the constructions of medical and research facilities at Siriraj Hospital.

Moreover, on August 9, 2013, Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn graciously gave a lecture on “Palliative Care” to the 4th and 5th year medical students at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Professor Prasit Watanapa, Deputy Dean and Director of Siriraj Hospital, Associate Professor Rungnirand Praditsuwan, Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Education, the administrative team, and the students humbly welcomed Her Royal Highness’s arrival at Ratchapanadda Sirindhorn Conference Hall, Srisavarindira Building.

From 3 - 7 June, 10 - 14 June, 8 - 12 July, and 15 - 19 July 2013, rotating groups of medical students from Saint George’s University (SGU), Grenada, visited the faculty on a joint summer program. SGU students were given a tour to Siriraj facilities, Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine and various departments. Moreover, they also visited the College of Sports Medicine and College of Music, Mahidol University, as well as the rural hospital in order to experience the public health condition in the rural area.

On Monday August 26, 2013, a group of 30 physiatrists (Rehabilitation Medicine Doctor) from Myanmar, led by Professor Khin Myo Hla, the President of Myanmar Society of Rehabilitation Medicine, visited the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. Professor Rolf Keitzer (Right), a pediatric rheumatologist, coached the medical staffs in Department of Pediatrics from October 1, 2013 - December 31, 2013.

I am advisor for Charite International Corporation and Academy (www.chia.charite.de) and recently became a member of the “Task Force International” a small working group appointed by the Dean of the Charite. As I like the Asia Pacific region during European long and cold wintertime and especially Thailand, the acceptance as a Visiting Scholar at Siriraj Hospital Mahidol University for 3 months was very interesting task and as well a great challenge for me. So my schedule with the students consists of bedside teaching (students are easily bridging the language barrier to the patients and parents), special lectures, “video clinic” with short case examples, bedside emergency ultrasound training, participation in grand rounds, problem case discussions, morning conferences as well as journal clubs.

There is also space for exchange of exper iences and knowledge with your very experienced senior physicians during conferences and grand rounds and I also gain a lot of knowledge about local special diseases and receive many inspirations as well. The work with your kind and well trained students is a great pleasure. I am very much impressed by the unique Campus Atmosphere here at Siriraj, where students and young residents live at the compound. I never found a comparable “Corporate Identity” anywhere else. It is a inspiring to pass by the dormitories in the evenings and weekends, watching the students learning, discussing or even painting together. The very special friendly and highly professional working atmosphere at Department Pediatrics made my start rather easy. I apreciate that being a Medical Teacher is a very high value at Siriraj Hospital and also the students seem to appreciate that a lot. Now after 6 weeks I myself still have a steep learning curve concerning learning about names, structures, special diseases, procedures and the cultural approach as well, but it is getting easier with each week and I am confident, that it will be a “win – win” experiment at the end. These are the benedictions of globalization: My wife, Nok, from Phayao and I from Mulheim in Germany met in London, where she graduated as a PhD in nursing at King’s College London. I’m Benno von Bormann, but everybody calls me Benno, a German Professor of Anesthesiology,

following my wife after retirement, and working at the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital for more than two years. My experiences are overwhelmingly positive. People say Thailand is the ‘Land of Smiles’, and believe me it’s true. Everybody smiles at me and tries to comfort me. Coming from a regimented society as Germany, where I used to be head of the Anesthetic Department of the Catholic Hospital, Duisburg more than 22 years, Thailand is a true challenge. Professor Jariya Lertakyamanee, my wonderful boss at Siriraj, use to say, ‘Benno, you must get adapted to Thai culture’, means, ‘Calm down, be patient’. I have to admit, patience is not my strong side. But things get done, and that’s what counts - isn’t it? My work as scientific adviser, meanwhile including the Orthopedic Department Siriraj and the Anesthetic Department Ramathibodi means reading, talking, writing, drafting, considering, and, yes, pushing people from time to time. Truth to be told, I enjoy every single day, and using this platform I want to say, ‘Khob Khun Krub’ to all of you. There is significant progress in research quality including presentation and publishing in English language, which is less my merit but more the dedication of the people. My personal philosophy? I believe in education being the key to a better world, because people who know and understand don’t believe everything and don’t obey without consideration.

My name is Bounleua Litdang and I come from Lao P.D.R. I am 25 years old this year. I was a medical

student at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hopital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It started from my family

that made me want to become a doctor so I decided to study in Thailand because the language is similar

to Laos. I hope that someday I can return to Laos and help poor people with their health problems. I was

granted the scholarship to study the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri

Sirindhorn, the princess of Thailand in 2006 and graduated from Faculty of Medicine from Siriraj Hospital on

February 2013. During my study in Siriraj hospital, I have experienced many difficulties, which are mainly

about the Thai language and change in community. During these times, there are many friends, teachers and

family helping me go through with them. Life in Siriraj hospital is definitely new to me and it slowly became a

part of who I am today. There are many specialties that interest me here, such as obstetrics and gynecology,

preventive medicine and internal medicine because all of mentioned are definitely useful to develop people’s

health in Laos. I would like to thank you all of my teachers, the staffs here, my friends, my family and those

who come into my life during these times. I have many things to say to each person. One of the things

I would like to say, which is what Ajarn Witthaya inspired me to think of what I was afraid to think about, is

that I have many dreams. And one of my dreams is to create a hospital aiming on trauma and obstetrics

in my hometown. I am moving on with my life, but this place, Siriraj hospital, is home to me. Thank you!!

“During one year training I got a lot of experience, because I met a lot of patients

with chronic pain, pains suffering and also acute pain patients. Those made me gained

a lot of knowledge. I also got a new experience about interventional pain management

which has not been existed in my country.

During my life in Thailand, there was a language barrier that made the clinical setting

became more challenging, however, I got a lot of help from Siriraj residents, trainers,

and my fellow friends during interviewing patients, and those made me clarified. For the

accommodation and living lifestyle were about the same as my country, so it is not difficult

to adapt at all. I was happy to be at Siriraj, despite I felt a little bit of homesick for the first

month of being here. The fellowship training in Pain Management was excellent. One

thing I would like to suggest is it would better if Siriraj residents or doctors communicate

in English during the ward round or when there is a group discussion, so International

guest like me can add comment and share an idea as you did. Finally, I would like to

give an acknowledgment to the president and committee member of IASP and WFSA

for funding support, and my thank also goes to Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty

of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, who provided an excellent training to me.”

“Siriraj International Visiting Scholar” Program

It is among the top priorities that the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol Universi ty ascends to the recognition of international standards. Our goal is to become one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with up to date facilities and capable medical personnel fully prepared to meet the growing demands of high quality healthcare of the ASEAN community by 2015.

In order to realize the vision stated above, the faculty has established the “Siriraj International Visiting Scholar” program to encourage further integration in education management, research, academic services in terms of medical and health science. The program will be instructed by visiting scholars from international universities. Expenditures and benefits will be supported by the faculty. On May 27 2013, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and Medtronic (Thailand) Ltd. held a meeting on the joint project to launch the a state-of-the-art Endovascular Center in Bangkok. The meeting was convened at the faculty meeting room on the 2nd floor of the Administration building with the vital attendance of Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Professor Supakorn Rojanin Chairman of Department of Surgery, Professor Pramook Mutirangura, Chief of Vascular Surgery Unit, Mr. Hurh Joon, President of Asia Pacific and Medtronic International and Mr.Poole Jr. George, Senior Business Director, Endovascular Therapies, Asia Pacific.

The Center will utilize high-end treatment procedures for abdominal aortic aneurysms and arterial occlusion training for doctors in Asia Therapy Certification Centers of Excellence (TCCE). In this occassion, both parties signed an agreement upon this collaborative project.

On July 8, 2013, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, held a press conference “Siriraj succeeded in using laser to treat cataracts for the first time among medical schools in Thailand.” Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, presided at the event, along with Associate Professor Suroj Supavekin, Deputy Director of Siriraj Hospital, Associate Professor Jutalai Tantedtham, Head of Ophthalmology, and Professor Sabong Srivannaboon, Director of SILasik - the main physician of this project - along with his ophthalmology team: Associate Professor Adisak Trinavarat and Assistant

On June 28, 2013, Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, along with Dr. Nipon Pothipattanachai, Director-General of Department of Medical Sciences, presided over the press conference for “Siriraj collaborates with Department of Medical Sciences in joint research on healing Macular Degeneration (RP Type) with Stem Cells for the first time in Thailand.” This event was also adjoined by Dr.Somchai Sangkijporn, the Director of the National Institute of Health, Department of Medical Sciences, and Associate Professor Jutalai Tanterdtham, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, as well as Professor La-Ongsri Atchaneeyasakul, Head of stem cell research projects, Department of Ophthalmology, and Assistant Professor Visit Vamvanit, Director of Siriraj Hospital.

On May 30 2013, Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, and Associate Professor Nisarat Opartkiatikul, Director of Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, presided over the certification ceremony upon the Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics receiving the ISO 9001: 2008 certification for “Quality Management and Research” from Intertek Moody International Certification (under the UKAS Network, United Kingdom).

In addition, the school also received the “ISPO category 1” quality certification (the highest ranking of ISPO) for Bachelor’s Degree curriculum--placing the institution as the first and the only of its kind in the world. These certifications have demonstrated the capabilities of Siriraj to thrive among the leading institutions. With trusted international standards, Thailand is able to produce high quality prostheses and orthosis to meet the growing demands of prominent healthcare. Nevertheless, the international standard promises further collaborations between Siriraj and other institutions of concerning proficiencies as well.

International Events

On August 23, 2013, nineteen doctors from Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hosptial, Mahidol University, headed for the “Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Conference 2013” in Prague, Czech Republic. In this occasion, it was also the celebration of the 40th anniversary of AMEE, held under the theme: Colouring Outside the Lines, between August 24 - 28, 2013.

Congratulations to Siriraj Security Guards for Their Completion of the

“Intensive English Course for Security Guards”

On August 20, 2013, Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hos-pital, Mahidol University, handed certificates to Siriraj security guards who successfully completed the “English Course for Security Guards” program. The program enrolled a total of 220 enthusiastic security guards—divided into 12 classes, for a duration of 3 months (from May 5 to July 29).

“English Course for Security Guards” was a project piloted by the International Relation Division with the aim to assist faculty’s security guards in developing their skills in English conversation. Professor Dr. Chirayu Auewarakul, Deputy Dean for International Rela-tions, reported the overall assessment of the project in the following details: 80% of the attendants were satisfied with the course and 100% of the attendants “passed” the course. These security guards are the first to meet and communicate with foreigners on the grounds of the faculty. This program represents our initiative to advance the faculty’s capabilities for the coming of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.
