Railway Modernization Project (Romania) Problem Addressed by the Project The European Union (EU) has planned to open Europe-Caucasus-Central Asia (TRACERA) transport corridors by railway and road. These corridors cross the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea from east to west and connect with important Pan-European Transport Corridors. Corridor IV with a total length of 3,285 km crosses the countries of Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. On Romanian territory, Corridor IV has a railway component with a total length of 841 km across the north and to the east on a route through Curtici- Arad-Sibiu-Brasov-Constanta. This railway route is the most important of the lines and carries about 25% of the total traffic of the Romanian Railway compared with only 8% of the total railway network length. However, the facilities of the line were deteriorated and needed to be upgraded to meet European standards by removing speed restrictions, modernizing facilities to enable high-speed train operations (160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains) and to increase the carrying capacity of the railway system.
