Product Overview
The S9300 is a high-end terabit routing switch developed by Huawei for the service-focused network. It is designed
based on the intelligent multilayer switching technology of Huawei to provide intelligent service optimization
methods such as traffic analysis, comprehensive QoS policies, controllable multicast, integrated security guarantee in
addition to stable, reliable, secure, and high performance L2/L3 switching services. In addition, it features super high
extensibility and reliability.
The S9300 is applicable to WANs, MANs, campus networks, as well as the core layer and aggregation layer of data
centers to help enterprises build an application-oriented network. It integrates the switching and routing functions
to build an end-to-end integrated network.
The S9300 has three models: S9303, S9306, and S9312. Their switching capacity and port density can be expanded
continuously. The three models use universal modules and components. This not only ensures the extensibility of the
equipment, but also protects the investments of carriers. In addition, the S9300 adopts various innovative energy
saving technologies, which greatly reduce the energy consumption and noise of the equipment without affecting
the performance and stability of the system. By developing the S9300, Huawei can provide solutions for sustainable
development of networks.

Carrier-Level High Availability Design to Ensure Service Consistency
The availability of the S9300 is 99.999%, which meets the requirement of carrier-class operation. The key components of the
S9300, including the switch routing unit, power supplies, and fans, support hot swapping. The S9300 adopts a distributed
hardware-based forwarding architecture that separates the routing plane from the data forwarding plane. This architecture
ensures service consistency.
The S9300 provides 3.3 ms hardware-based Ethernet OAM function, which can quickly detect and locate faults. By using the
Ethernet OAM technology and switchover technologies, the S9300 provides millisecond protection for networks.
to 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s. It is completely compatible with line cards used on incumbent networks, which
protects investments of carriers.
The current carrying ability of the backplane allows for increasing power and heat dissipation requirement
brought by bandwidth upgrade in the future. Certain data buses are reserved for high-speed switching fabrics.
Each S9300 supports 576 10GE ports. The high density of 10GE ports brings enterprise campus networks and
data centers into an era of all-10GE core network.
Innovative Triple-Plane Design
The S9300 adds an independent environment monitoring plane to the traditional data forwarding plane and
control plane, thus realizing a triple-plane design. It adopts an innovative environment monitoring board to
manage and monitor the line cards, fans, and power modules.
The environment monitoring board uses an independent central control chip to implement hardware-based
power-saving functions such as dynamic power adjustment by traffic, separate fan control, intelligent fan speed
adjustment, and port hibernation. The system performance is greatly improved and the power consumption of
the entire equipment is reduced.
The environment monitoring board can work with the network management system to provide a visual
management environment for maintaining the S9300.

The S9300 implements seamless switchover between active components and standby components and graceful restart. In
later versions, the S9300 will support the in-service software upgrade (ISSU), which can minimize disruption of mission-critical
data and services.
The S9300 supports Enhanced-Trunk (E-Trunk) feature, which can ensure multi-chassis link aggregation. With E-Trunk S9300
need not use MSTP, in L2 network, which improves equipment utilization efficiency for the link while avoiding a single point
of failure.
The S9300 supports the link aggregation feature defined in IEEE 802.3ad, the IEEE 802.1s/w standard, and the Virtual Router
Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). In addition, it supports various millisecond switchover technologies, such as RRPP, Smart Link, IP
FRR, TE FRR, and VPN FRR. These technologies implement carrier-level high availability.
Cluster Switching System (CSS)
The CSS technology virtualizes multiple switches into a logical device. The switches in the cluster share the control information
and synchronize their routing tables and multicast forwarding tables.
The CSS technology improves the bandwidth a single device can provide and enables core switches to provide high
bandwidth and throughput required by the high-density 10GE core layer of campus networks and large-capacity data
centers.
The CSS technology improves the system reliability. Most switches implement the CSS function through line cards. This
method requires multiple switching processes cross chassises and therefore reduces the switching efficiency. The S9300
implements the CSS function through switching fabrics to solve this problem. In this way, switching fabrics of the switches
in a cluster are connected. This method saves line card slots and provides 256 Gbit/s bandwidth, which is the highest in the
industry. In addition, inter-chassis link aggregation can be used to improve link usage and eliminate single-point faults.
The CSS technology facilitates management of the core layer. The cluster uses a virtual IP address and is managed as one
network element, which reduces network elements on the network. Thus the network topology is simplified, the operation
efficiency is improved, and the OPEX is reduced.

ISSU Function to Ensure Non-interruptive Network Running
The ISSU function reduces service interruption during software upgrade and improves the system reliability. The
ISSU function enables enterprise networks to provide services 24 hours a day. With this function, device software
can be upgraded without interrupting services and applications.
The S9300 provides three ISSU upgrade modes: lossless upgrade, lossy upgrade, and immediate restart. The
system can automatically find differences of modules in the new version and old version and provide a suggested
upgrade mode.
The S9300 supports auto-rollback of the system software when ISSU upgrade fails. The line cards can back up
processes of the new version and old version to reduce service interruption caused by the upgrade.
Improved QoS Mechanism
The S9300 provides excellent Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee. S9300 supports for Layer2 ~ Layer7 flow
classification technology. It adopts various queue scheduling algorithms and congestion control algorithms to
control data traffic accurately and hierarchically, providing differentiated services for different users.
The S9300 provides a hierarchical QoS (H-QoS) mechanism. It sets a scheduler for each service class to refine QoS
attributes of traffic so that QoS of key services can be better guaranteed. The H-QoS mechanism can be applied
to the access network to meet service requirements on different layers of a large enterprise campus network.
Full-Service Ethernet Switching Platform
The S9300 supports distributed L2/L3 MPLS VPN functions, including MPLS, VPLS, HVPLS, and VLL, to provide
access for various VPN users.
The S9300 provides WAN daughter-cards of different rates to support access to the WAN.
The S9300 has a capability to copy multicast packets between VLANs at the line speed on a full-load interface.
This meets the requirements of multi-terminal video monitoring and video conferencing. Through L2 and L3
multicast protocols, the S9300 can function as the multicast replication point and control point to provide IP

multicast video and audio services.
VRP software platform provides multiple routing protocols to meet the requirements in enterprise networking,
support level from small-middle business (SMB) to large multinational large-scale routing. The S9300 supports
IPv6 and provides smooth migration solution from IPv4 to IPv6 on the enterprise networks.
The system can be expanded to support various clock solutions, including the synchronization Ethernet clock and
clock synchronization defined in IEEE 1588.
The S9300 supports the standard PoE function to provide power for powered devices. Each port provides a
maximum power of 15.4 W (complying with IEEE 802.3af) or 30 W (complying with IEEE 802.3at).
Virtual Data Center Switching Platform
The S9300 supports the CSS technology, which enables core switches and aggregation switches of a data
center to provide large capacity, high reliability, and mass throughput. The S9300 innovatively implements the
CSS function through switching fabrics. Inter-device link aggregation can be implemented to improve usage
of bandwidth resources in the data center. This technology hides physical links from data switching in the data
center.
The S9300 provides line cards with large caches specific to the service model of large distributed data centers.
Each port of such a line card provides 200 ms caching of data flows. This prevents packet loss caused by high
burst traffic on the distributed computing network.
The S9300 supports refined QoS guarantee and traffic management. It uses various queue scheduling algorithms
and congestion control algorithms to control data traffic accurately and hierarchically. In this way, the S9300 can
assign different priorities and queues to flows of different users and services according to their QoS requirements
and provides different bandwidth, delay, and jitter for them.
High IPv6 Service Capability
Both the hardware platform and software platform of the S9300 support IPv6. The S9300 has gained IPv6 Ready
Phase 2 (Gold) designation.
The S9300 supports IPv4/IPv6 dual stack, various tunneling technologies, IPv6 static routes, RIPng, OSPFv3,
BGP+, IS-ISv6, and IPv6 multicast to meet the requirements of independent IP networks and IPv4/IPv6 integrated
networks.
Intelligent Load Balancing
The load balancer of the S9300 can ensure service availability, improve service response speed, and facilitate
service expansion.
The load balancer of the S9300 supports multiple load balancing algorithms to meet all requirements for load
balancing, such as weighted round robin (WRR), connection count-based hash, weighted IP-based hash, and
HTTP URL-based hash.
Web portal servers often receive requests for the same web page or service at the same time, and the servers
need to set up and close TCP connections frequently. This consumes many CPU resources and reduces the

response speed of servers. The load balancer of the S9300 supports reuse of TCP and HTTP connections to
reduce the work load of setting up and closing TCP connections, thus increasing the access rate of Web portal
servers.
The load balancer of the S9300 supports dynamic traffic locking to implement load balancing for online shopping
on ecommerce websites.
Powerful Netstream Function
The S9300 supports distributed Netstream through line cards and integrated Netstream through a dedicated
processing line card. The Netstream function helps to collect and analyze network traffic in real time.
The S9300 supports Netstream packets of v5, v8, and v9 and provides aggregation traffic template to reduce
the workload of the traffic collector. It can collect traffic in real time, generate reports dynamically, analyze traffic
attributes, and generate alarms for abnormal traffic.
The Netstream function helps to monitor network traffic in real time and analyze throughput of network devices.
The traffic analysis results are basis of network optimization and expansion.
Excellent Security Design
Built-in firewall can support virtual firewalls and multiple instances of NAT, which helps multiple customers
sharing the same firewall. Dynamic blacklist active defense technology to achieve worm prevention, resist
topology detection, IP and port sniff attack protection for enterprises to build secure Intranet. Application
Specific Packet Filter (ASPF) technology can detect for application layer packet based on complex rules, ASPF
supports for SIP, QQ, MSN, H.323, SMTP, RTSP, FTP, HTTP and variety of application layer protocols. Hot-backup
firewall enhances network reliability and anti-attack capability.
The S9300 supports Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA). It performs AAA for access users
according to policies. In addition, the S9300 supports 802.1x, portal, and Guest VLAN. S9300 supports
dynamical access authentication, thus it can work with the NAC products of mainstream manufacturers.
The S9300 supports the routing protocol encryption, MAC address filtering, dynamic ARP detection, and ACLs to
protect data of service providers and end users. Hardware-based packet filtering and sampling guarantee high
performance and high scalability of the system.
The S9300 uses a 2-level CPU protection mechanism and supports 1K hardware queues for CPU protection. It
separates the data plane and the control plane and prevents DoS attacks, unauthorized access, and overload of
the control plane. With these features, the S9300 provides industry-leading integrated security solutions.
Six Innovations to Save Power by 30%
Environment-friendly design: The S9300 uses an intelligent chip to adjust the equipment power according to the
traffic, which can reduce equipment power 8%.
Revolving air flow: Revolving air flow of the S9300 not only improves heat dissipation of the equipment, which
can reduce equipment power 3%, but also facilitates six times cable-layout than traditional switch in one cabinet.
On-demand configuration of the power supply: The power supply can be configured on demand to reduce the

investment in the early stage and lower the power consumption 10%.
Fan flexible controlling by position: Fans of high-power line cards and low-power line cards are controlled
separately, which can reduce noise 10% and save power.
Intelligent fuzzy fan speed-adaptation: The rotation speed of fans can be adjusted flexibly according to the
temperature of key components free from temperature disturbance. This technology reduces equipment power
3% and extends the lifetime of fans.
Port hibernation: The port hibernation technology enables the S9300 to adjust the output power according to
the traffic on a port, thus saving power 6% without packet loss.
Universal Components to Reduce Costs of Spare Parts
The S9300 adopts the industry-leading heat dissipation design, which solves the problem of heat dissipation on
large-capacity equipment. This design enables the S9300 to provide the highest port density per cabinet in the
industry.
All models of the S9300 series use the power supplies, fans, environment monitoring units of the same type. The
highly uniform design reduces models of components, and thus saves the customer's investment.
The S9300 adopts energy saving chips and a high-efficient energy saving management platform. Its energy-
efficiency ratio is higher than counterpart products.

Quidway S9300 core switches help users to construct enterprise campus network with high reliability, high
performance, and business easy to expand and manage. S9300 has distributed IPv4/IPv6/MPLS wire speed
switching capacity to meet the enterprise campus core node and aggregation node, which has high-density
10-Gigabit massive data throughput. S9300 can provide CPU queue based on hardware, which can protect
network against DDOS attacks and a variety of security threats.
Configuration Guide
S9300 is modular configuration. Product configuration includes basic configuration, software License, Line
Processing Units (LPU), Service Processing Unit (SPU), daughter units, and other types of units (CSS Service Unit,
Clock Pinch Card), transceiver and fiber connectors.
Product configuration must include the basic configuration, for the first time purchase. Basic configuration
includes Assembly Chassis, Switch Routing Unit (SRU) and power module. SRU must configure at least one unit,
but we recommend configure 2 units in order to improve equipment reliability. Power module must configure at
least one module, but we recommend configure 2 or 4 modules for 1 +1 or 2 + 2 redundant in order to improve
equipment reliability, flexibility to choose according to machine power.DC power module and AC power module
does not support mixed-configuration. Then, based on actual requirement you can configure software license,
LPUs, SPUs and daughter units. These units may choose from the ordering information table as followed. Finally,
you can select the transceivers and fiber connectors, which can refer to the list of common quotes.
If there already has been a basic configuration, only on this basis, you can add LPUs and upgrade software from
the ordering information table as followed, according to the actual demand.
