QuietCreek’syear‐roundclassescoversustainabletopicssuchasintegratedpestmanagement,vermicomposting,creatingraisedbeds,soilfoodweb,herbalsoapmaking,breadmaking,shiitakeinoculationandmanymore!ApprenticeshipsandJuniorInternshipsarealsoavailableforstudentswhopossessapassionforsustainableliving.TheOrnershaveover30yearsofteachingexperienceand50yearsoforganicfarmingexperience.
RustyhasaBSinAgriculturefromPennsylvaniaStateUniversityandexperienceindairyfarming,growingherbs/vegetablesandlandscaping.ClairehasaBSinGeologyfromWestVirginiaUniversityandtwoMasterdegreesinMiddleSchoolEducationandCurriculum&InstructionfromAppalachianStateUniversityandtheUniversityofWashington,respectively.SheiscertifiedinthestatesofPennsylvaniaandNorthCarolinatoteachK‐12studentsgeneralcurriculum,biologyearthscience,environmentalscience,physics,andchemistryandhasteachingexperienceinbothstates.InNorthandSouthCarolinashewasemployedasanEnergy/EnvironmentalEducatorofCarolinaPower&LightCompany.AtQuietCreek,Claireconductsseminarsonthetopicsofrenewableandnon‐renewableenergy,generationofelectricity,electricalsafety,andmoretokindergartenthroughadult(teachersandadministrators)students.Ontheuniversitylevel,ClairecoordinatedtheUniversityofWashingtonScience/MathematicsFellowsProgram.Priortoherteachingexperience,ClairewasahydrogeologywithToddGiddingsandAssociatesmonitoringthewaterquality/quantityproblemsassociatedwiththecoalandsolidwasteindustries.
ClaireandRustycombinetheirtechnicalbackgroundswiththeirloveofteachingbyofferinganarrayofenvironmentaleducationalandsustainablelivingprogramsfundedbygrantwriting,taxdeductiblecontributionsandeducationalimprovementtaxcredits.
Thefarmhasbeenoperatingover15years,andhasbeenanon‐profitorganizationfor8years.OURMISSION
Weareanon‐profit,charitable,educationalorganizationdedicatedtotheconservationofnaturalresources,ecologicalthinkingandhealthfulsustainableliving.Ourgoalistoexpandoureducationalresourcesbyofferingahomeschoolcurriculum,co‐sponsoringworkshopswiththePennsylvaniaAssociationforSustainableAgriculture(PASA)andCitizenPower,andbuildingsustainablehousingforstudentstostayduringweek‐longintensiveclasses.

Preteen/TeenCamp‐EnvironmentalTheaterCamp

Formanyyears,students“intheschooloflife”havegracedthefarmwiththeirpresence,hardwork,andlearningspirit.Infact,oursons,Walker&Ashton,wouldfinditoddnottohaveoneortwoextrafolksatthedinnertableonaregularbasis.QuietCreekinternsareanimportantcomponenttoournon‐profitorganization.Theideawasadoptedfromotherfarmsthatopentheirdoorstoapprentices,interns,andvolunteers.Inlieuoffortyhoursofwork,ourinternsareprovidedwithroom/boardandasmuchinformationtheycanabsorbfromourknowledge,classes,network,computerfiles,andgardeninglibrary.Manyhavecometolearntheropesofstartinganeducationalfacility;somehaveakeeninterestingrowingvegetablesorganicallywhileotherswanttogleanthemedicinal,nutritional,andspiritualaspectofsustainableliving.Theprocessbeginswithane‐mailfromaprospectiveinternwhohasreadapostingonawebsiteorbook,orconversedwithaformerintern.ThenextstepisaphonecallwhereRustyhasperfected,throughtheyears,theproperinterviewtechnique.HeattemptstotalkthepersonoutofcomingtoQuietCreek.Thismaysoundcounterproductive,but“ifyouarelookingforasociallife–trythecity,ifyouneedamentalhealthconsultant–seeapsychiatrist,andifyoudon’tliketoweed–hangup.”HisintentisNOTtopaintarosypicture;theinternshipcanbechallengingandlonely.Ifthepotentialvolunteerisstillinterested,weinvitethatpersonforanovernightstayandworkday.Thisincludesexperiencingwholefoodmeals,playingwithoursons,andwhateverfarmprojectisinprogress.Aftercheckingreferencesononeanother,we,asateamdecideifthereisamutuallybenefitingfit.Ifso,internsaregivenownershipinpartofthefarmtomatchtheirlearningexpectations.Theyarementoredandnurturedinalltheydo.Rustyexplains,iftheydon’tmakemistakes,they’reprobablynotdoingenough.Hisfamousquestion,“Whatisthebestansweryoucangiveyoursupervisorwhenaskedtodoatask?”Mostreply,“Yes,I’lldoitrightaway.”Althoughagoodresponse,(hesharesthebestanswer),“It’salreadydone.”TheinternshipsarechallengingtoboththeQuietCreekfamilyandthenewresidents,buttheexperienceyieldsmanyrewardsforall.Wehavebeenblessedwithcaringfolkswhohavebecomefamilymembers.Theyhavesharedstoriesfromwheretheyhavelived,Vermont,California,andIreland,justtonameafew.Theyrelishthesustainably‐grownfoodgrownandpreparedbyallofus.Arrivingaswanderingworkers,ourinternsleaveaslifelongfriends.

WhatisaCommunityGarden?Acommunitygardenisanypieceoflandgardenedbyagroupofpeople.Itcanbeurban,suburban,orrural.Itcangrowflowers,vegetablesorcommunity.Itcanbeonecommunityplot,orcanbemanyindividualplots.Itcanbeataschool,hospital,orinaneighborhood.Itcanalsobeaseriesofplotsdedicatedto"urbanagriculture"wheretheproduceisgrownforamarket.
