WE WANT BETTER PAY: Shoprite workers in Tzaneen demand a minimum wage of R4 500 and that the newly appointed branch manager resigns with immediate eff ect.

Shoprite workers demand better paySHOPRITE workers in Tzaneen embarked on a protest last Thursday demanding a minimum wage of R4 500 and that the newly appointed branch manager resign with immediate effect.

of them have worked for more than 10 years but they have not been offered permanent positions.

The staff demands that the fi red staff members return to work. They also said that the security boss, William Nomakonde is not making their work easy. Apparently whenever there is theft in the store his workers will just come and handcuff the staff without asking any questions.

Crime reports THE management of Herald Group of Newspapers has learnt with shock and disappointment that there seems to be some vendors selling the paper at a price not approved by its management.

A concerned reader, told the Herald that as per his normal routine of buying the paper weekly, he went looking for the newspaper at an outlet.

“I popped out R10 to buy a copy; the storekeeper gave me a change of R6-50. I then asked him if the price of the newspaper has increased? The guy said 0,50c is for commission, I said to him that the price on the newspaper is R3,00 including vat. He then said to me his boss said they add for commission. The management of Herald Group of Newspapers on Monday said the reader has very good reason to be concerned.

“Nobody may charge more for a newspaper than the price displayed on the front page. That price includes a commission for the vendor/seller. It is illegal and unethical to sell newspapers at a higher price than that indicated on the cover. We will investigate and should this proof to be a regular occurrence we will scrap the vendor/seller as an outlet for our newspapers.” The correct retail price for Letaba Herald remains R3.00 and these prices includes Vat.

ACCIDENT: A truck and car was involved in an accident on the corner of Kew street and Skirving street. (Photo submi ed).

Truck causes accidentMarianco [email protected]

ILLEGAL reloading and loading of heavy vehicles in a busy street of Tzaneen caused an accident and will cause many more if nothing is done.

The accident, which involved a truck and a car occurred on the corner of Kew and Skirving street last Tuesday.

Letaba Herald asked the local traffi c department what they are going to do about it.

Neville Ndlala, municipal spokesperson said “Our traffi c offi cials will continuously monitor the area to prevent these kind of accidents. The trucks must upload in that area since it’s a place of business, we however urge motorists to drive with caution in that street. We will look into the situation

to see if something more drastic can be done to address concerns by motorists.”

The truck was approaching Waltons.“I tried to alert the truck that he was about

to bump into me” said the driver of the car, Khanyisa Zwane.

The driver of the truck realised he bumped into the car and reversed whilst dragging the car.

There was four occupants in the car. Zwane said they were absolutely terrifi ed,

especially when the truck was dragging them. There was no injuries but the car is beyond

repair. It is a risk for drivers and it is evident that

the street is not safe.Zwane said “Thank God that He protected

me during the accident.”The accident could have been much worse.

Three houses destroyed by fireANGRY villagers at Ga-Sekgopo went on rampage on Sunday morning, burning down three houses belonging to alleged criminals terrorising the community.

This after three young men were accused of unleashing a reign of terror on the community and of being responsible for the killing of a young man in the village last week.

According to the police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the community mobilised and set fi re to the houses belonging to the families of the three young men.

At the time of going to press, no one has been arrested and police were investigating cases of arson and public violence.

He warned members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands but instead, report their concerns to the police management.

He added that police are continuing to closely monitor the situation in the village.

DESTROYED: Family’s belongings reduced to ashes in one of the houses in Ga-Sekgopo.

THE Greater Tzaneen Community radio station, commonly known as GTFM has not paid its staff since December 2014.

This resulted into a number of staff members leaving the station to seek green pastures. Three presenters who wished to remain anonymous for fear of victimization by management confi rmed that indeed they have not been paid since last December.

“Yes I can confi rm that we have not been paid and some of my colleagues have left the station because of this” said one presenter.

The Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (GTEDA), Chief Executive Offi cer Kwena Maphoto, said as GTEDA ,they are aware of the situation at the station. “We are aware of the problem. Our mandate as GTEDA ended after the

establishment of the radio station. A Board of Directors was appointed after establishing the radio station so I suggest you contact the chairperson to fi nd out exactly what seems to be the problem” said Maphoto.

The station manager, Tebatso Maapola, denied that the staff has not been paid. “As the station manager I am unaware of any employee that has not been paid. It is just people with hidden agendas and why do they want to remain anonymous. If really they have not been paid they would have taken actions against the station to ensure that they get their salaries. All of this is not true” said Maapola. Attempts to contact the chairperson of Board of Directors of the radio station for comment was unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

BUDGET: The Budget of the GTM was a long process, and many mes a painful exercise.

Cllr commends on budgetDA Cllr. Rene Pohl, Ward 15 writes:

IT is the duty of each Ward Cllr to give feedback to the community, as well as to inform the community about any information affecting them directly.

Therefore the following: The Budget was a long process, and many times a painful exercise.

Funding is available, huge amounts look promising on paper, but how does the community experience day to day service delivery due to them?

The DA accepted the Budget in general, but has the responsibility to raise the following serious concerns.

a) Only 17% is allocated to repairs and maintenance.

To be safe a municipality has to allocate at least 20 to 25% of the total budget to repairs and maintenance.

GTM needs to move from a dysfunctional to a fully functional status. This was also confi rmed by the Ruling Party on 12 January 2015.

The major aim is now to normalise the political and administrative situation in the

municipality. b) Management approves overtime above

40 hours per month, which is against the Regulations of the basic condition of the Employment Act.

c) GTM agreed that the new advertised positions must be fi lled, but did GTM budget effi ciently for all these salaries?

d) Excessive payments towards Legal fees and costs are one of the main factors that prevent GTM to provide effi cient service delivery to tax payers.

GTM is presently revising their By-Laws to be Gazetted later in 2015 and then to be implemented.

This entails further input from community members before the process is completed.

The fi reworks as well as the street hawkers By-Laws are relevant in this case.

There will be a By-Laws public participation meeting on Monday May 15 in the municipal building in the council chambers at 18:00.

Any input will be appreciated. The By-Law draft is currently on the GTM

ADDRESS: Mopani District Municipality Nkakareng Rakgoale addressing stakeholders at the District Water Summit at Magoebaskloof Hotel last Wednesday.

Communities to pay for water servicesTHE Mopani District Municipality will work on a plan to get all communities to pay for the water supplied to them as part of implementing cost recovery plan which will assist in the sustainability and maintenance of water infrastructure.

This came out of the District Water Summit held last Wednesday at the Magoebaskloof Hotel in Greater Tzaneen under the theme “water is life and sanitation is dignity.”

The summit resolved that the implementation of cost recovery mechanism will encourage communities to adhere to water conservation and demand management.

The summit also resolved that councilors should strengthen oversight through stakeholder engagement, public participation and awareness campaigns to address issues of illegal water connections, vandalism and theft of water infrastructure in the district.

Other resolutions of the summit include: Tracking devices be installed on all water infrastructure components; by-laws on water be reviewed and implemented and provision of water at industrial areas be looked to enable economic growth.

One of the councillors at the summit suggested that offi cials and councilors should lead by example and be the fi rst ones to pay as they also have access to free water.

Mhlaba Cross’s water committee representative, Irvin Shirindzi said the community have no problem paying for water service.”We don’t have any problem to pay for water services, what we want is the municipality to come to us and indicate to us exactly how they are going to charge us since we don’t have water meters” said Shirindzi.

The Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor Nkakareng Rakgoale said as a district municipality we are working tirelessly to address this crucial issue of water shortage and to fi nd a sustainable solution.

Rakgoale said that contractors will commence duty immediately after the summit to end water shortages problems in all fi ve local municipalities in the district. “Our electoral mandate is to work together to better the lives of our people, so let us ensure that this mandate is fulfi lled after this summit” concluded Rakgoale.

The executive mayor further said that many communities fi nd themselves with unclean water or no water at all.

Local traditional leaders, representatives of Eskom, Non Profi t Organisations, SALGA, COGHSTA, Offi ce of the Premier, Lepelle Northern Water and Department of Water and Sanitation were among those who attended the summit and gave presentations.

STAKEHOLDERS:Various stakeholders during the District Water Summit where it was suggested that communi es should start paying for water services in order to sustain and maintain the water infrastructure in the district.

long she couldn’t do anything on her own.If she would bend over to do some of her

More than Peacocks...birding in India with Dalena Mostert

Dalena Mostert, passionate birder and photographer, will transport us to India through her talk about a previous birding trip to this fascina ng area, and show off some of her stunning photos. Dalena grew up in the Karoo. Her father, a palaeontologist, loved nature and taught his family about the veld, the birds and animals. In 1990 she became extremely ill and suff ered from post-trauma c depression. She started birding for therapy, and never stopped! It became such a passion that she joined Birdingpal, started digiscoping, and in 2006 became serious about bird photography. She set herself two targets: To visit each con nent at least once in her life me,

and to see at least 3 000 bird species. So far, she has compiled an extensive photographic database of Southern African species, has travelled to Europe and Asia and is working on plans to visit South America in 2017.She works at Wes alia in the fi eld of intellectual property and has many other hobbies including reading, handicra , astronomy and gardening. The talk will be held at the Macadamia Community Centre on Thursday June 25 at 18:30pm.Chai and coff ee will be served a erwards. Visitors are always welcome and pay a small fee of R20. For further informa on contact Marianne McKenzie on 082 835 4185.

James is Vossies se trots

REDENAARS: Die Afrikaans Addisionele taal wenner, Michelle Stevens.

20 LETABA HERALD Friday June 12, 2015SCHOOL NEWS

Lize-Marie remembers challengeTHERE are a few moments in your life that one would like to build a memorial and celebrate it annually.

The “this time last year…” conversation that will continue many years to come.

We are continuously building memorials, leaving an inheritance for people of a legacy within them.

Taking part in the Unogwaja Challenge as a Support Crew member, representing Stanford Lake College and the Dream An’ Do Foundation (DAD Foundation) was an absolute privilege and something I hold close to my heart.

In 1933 Phil Masterson-Smith became the youngest man, at an age of 19, to win the Comrades Marathon. Phil was labelled the “Unogwaja” meaning hare / rabbit in Zulu for his speed.

Phil wanted to defend his title the following year, however as poverty in South Africa was rising he could not afford the train to Pietermaritzburg. Phil got on his bicycle, cycled to Pietermaritzburg in ten days and on the eleventh day he ran the Comrades Marathon.

Unable to maintain his title though, his heart of determination and hope was what captured the hearts of many people.

It is with this message of hope and determination that the Unogwaja Challenge started in 2010.

The Unogwaja Challenge is not a race, but a challenge. As 12 men or women are chosen from across the world, they endure the cold mornings of the Karoo, potholes of Transkei and Rolling Hills of Natal.

Cycling1650km in 10days and on the 11th day they put their bodies to the line of the “Ultimate Human Race” and complete the race, with usually 10 minutes to spare. It is an absolute display of comrade. Not much of a brain

teaser as to why the race is called the “Comrade(s)”.It truly is a display of fellow men, companions and

friends. And is a great way to display the Comrade between the

12 Cyclists who had just cycled across South Africa prior to the Comrades.

Money is raised towards the Unogwaja Light fund to support people that have created beacons of hope and Light in South Africa.

These are people that don’t do charity handouts, but who actually equip, teach and empower the hopeless with a message of hope and determination.

One thing that I have learnt from this experience is that our biggest resource to be the difference and create beacons of Light and hope is, in fact, ourselves.

We have a responsibility towards this nation and country. We have been called to be movers and shakers; to leave an inheritance and impart a legacy to the generations to come.

The Dream An’ Do foundation at Stanford Lake College was established to be the Light in a place where hope and determination lacks.

Our vision is to enable young people from less fortunate background, where hope is only a word found in the dictionary, the opportunity to access outdoor education experiences and teach and imparting leadership skills through this.

What memorials are you building? What legacies are you a part of?Phil Masterson-Smith We are Responsible.

To become involved with the Dream An’ Do foundation or Unogwaja Light fund.

Please contact Lize Marie Engelbrceht at 072 987 9981 or [email protected]
