Sand and varnish a wooden floorUnderneath the carpet, there's often a beautiful wooden floor waiting to be revealed.

A wooden floor has obvious advantages, not least its natural, non-toxicbeauty. It's also a lot easier to clean than carpet, and harbours fewer germsand dust mites, so it's better for people with allergies. If you're shoppingaround for wooden flooring, the best timber on the market is fromsustainably managed forests.o bring your wooden floor back to its beautiful best, you will need to getyour hands on some specialist kit, not least of which is an electric floorsander. !ou can easily rent one from "## hire from $%& a week - and theirfloor edging sander goes right up to the skirting board, so you won't have toget down on your hands and knees with sandpaper to finish the ob. !oushould also get a special brush for applying the varnish - with synthetic

fibres (a bit more expensive but more effective) - sandpaper, a mop andbucket, varnish, a floor pad and hammer.Method1.*lose the door so the dust doesn't travel, open the windows, and put ona dust mask and safety goggles. Inspect the bare floor (we'll take it forgranted you've removed all furniture and rugs+ carpets) - it's important youhammer down any nails that might be sticking out, so that the sanderdoesn't get caught on one.2.Also, fill in any gaps in the floorboards. or large gaps or holes, use a

thin strip of wood covered in glue and stick it in the gap for smaller gapsuse papier mache. o make the mache, mix a stiff paste with torn strips ofnewspaper and wallpaper adhesive. Add some water-based wood dye tomatch the sanded floor. orce it into the gaps, smooth off and let it dry.3.ow start by sanding the floor with coarse sandpaper. If you are using afloor sander you will need to fit it with sandpaper, ensuring that it isincredibly tight around the drum - the staff at the hire shop should talk youthrough this to avoid any errors. #tart at one end of the room, leaving abouttwo-thirds of the floor exposed in front. #tart the sander - the drum needs to

be off the floor - then walk forward and gently ease the drum to the floor. Asyou reach the end of the strip, cautiously begin to raise the drum off thefloor./ith hand-held floor sanders, again load the sandpaper so it's tight, startwith the sander off the floor and lower it gently. #and with the grain, movingthe sander slowly from side to side. As you get to the end of the strip, turnby sanding in a semicircle direction. ote0 1emember to unplug the sanderwhenever you need to change the sandpaper2

4.After sanding, once the dust has settled , vacuum everywhere, then wipe
