STEM-CHANGING VERBS ENDING IN –AR AND -ER

• Stem-changing verbs that end in –ar or –er change the stem vowel (vowel before the –ar or –er)in the present tense in two possible ways:

e ie o ue in all forms except nosotros and vosotros.

E - IE

comenzar – to begin

yo comienzo nosotros comenzamos

tú comienzas vosotros comenzáis

Ud. comienza Uds. comienzan

O - UE

volver – to return

yo vuelvo nosotros volvemos

tú vuelves vosotros volvéis

Ud. vuelve Uds. vuelven

Note that jugar has the stem-change u ue.

jugar – to play a game

yo juego nosotros jugamos

tú juegas vosotros jugáis

Ud. juega Uds. juegan

Note that oler has the stem-change o hue.

oler – to smell

yo huelo nosotros olemos

tú hueles vosotros oléis

Ud. huele Uds. huelen
