Jessica Bishopp Design for Interaction and Moving Image Portfolio 2015 I enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures and people; from bartering in a Gambian market to climbing a mountain in Snowdonia. I am interested in the creation and documentation of narrative and the story using various mediums. I enjoy experimenting with different media from film, installation, graphics, 3D, photography, sound to book arts, however all of my work has universal themes that are embedded in daily lives and thoughts; I like to study basic human interactions and use real individuals to inspire all my work, giving it a documentary bias. I create time-based work encouraging participation and interaction. Community is an important aspect of my work; the definition of a community, how it is established, maintained and developed. I believe the mundane and imperfect to be both fascinating and beautiful. Confessional and intimate, my work intends to facilitate and document conversation and relies heavily on outside interaction, without the enthusiasm and willingness of participants the work would not be possible. +44(0)7840493246 [email protected] www.jessicabishopp.com

I taught students aged 16-20 from The Gambia Senior Secondary School, Banjul the basics of photography in relation to themselves and their environment. The focus of the workshops was how to tell a story through an image. Every student was given a disposable camera to use and we discussed their photographs in the final workshop. I exhibited the Gambian students’ photographs in London and published them in a photobook entitled, ‘See What I See’ which is being sold in London bookshops. The photographs show an insight into the Gambian teenagers’ lives that an outsider could never capture, they are intimate and candid; bringing a new perspective to images of Africa from the inside and not the usual outside looking in. The project recently won a Creative Conscience Award 2014. www.gambiamad.com

Short documentary film, installation and community project. I have worked with the Leathermarket JMB Local History Group since November 2013. From discussing memories of their streets of the past I created a short documentary film using archive footage. I am looking to develop the project into a mapping system whereby you can hear their memories of a particular street as you walk that street today. The project focuses on the collective living memory of the community and their streets in Bermondsey. Film length - 00:14:39www.vimeo.com/111633854

The web of cups and string is an interactive sound installation that allows people to play with conversation, memory, and anonymity; some cups murmur previous confessions, whilst others listen to you, creating a dialogue between the cups. When you speak into a cup your confession is not immediately played out but stored in the installation’s memory to be played later when a participant volunteers their ear to listen. It uses Max MSP. The project won the 2014 IdeasTap Graduate Award for Digital Design.Film length - 00:01:09www.vimeo.com/106022333

An estimated 50% of antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily each year. The overuse has disastrous effects on the human body, leading to antibiotic resistant bacteria. WWWL (Whoever Wins We Lose) is an interactive workshop in which participants can create and battle either a motorised antibiotic or bacteria and join the ongoing battle for the immune system! The project was exhibited at the Bio-Revolution Science Museum Lates in February 2014. Over 1000 adults were sitting on the floor making and battling their own antibiotic or bacteria. It was the most popular Science Museum Late to date with over 7000 people attending. This project was a collaboration with Nikolai Boyce and Emilia Hapka.www.wwwl.org.uk

Debug tracks insects’ movement (using a camera and processing) around a human designed structure that is beautiful through its simplicity, from a 3d cut out of a word to a cut out of the Zurich transport map or Swiss flag (all water jet cut). Different line qualities and shapes form as each of the insect species has its own identity through its path and movement. The main concept of the project is about creating and exploring dynamic identities, as Edhv are architects of identity. Edhv were exhibiting Debug at the graphic design and illustration exhibition fair Grafik13 in Zurich. I worked on Debug whilst interning at Edhv, I was given great responsibility over the project and designed several of the posters.

Speed - September 2011Short documentary film exploring the speed of recovery after an incident. The sound was collected through interviews on the subject and the visual split screen with found images from the 1970s (left) and the documentation of the clearing of my Grandad’s house (right) emphasize the sense of detachment from time and speed when you are recovering.Film length - 00:02:39www.vimeo.com/111404506
