So after Saturday were thankful we have a game

straight away that we can bounce back in. We were not at it Saturday and defensively we weren’t good enough, it’s not often we say that but it’s true. The back 5 have to hold their hands up. We conceded sloppy goals, we know we’re better than that.

Anyway it’s gone, we have to move straight on. What happend Saturday has got us bang up for tonight, we are raring to go. It’ll be a tough game, Hitchin are doing well this season, they will be a threat, but if we get back to our best defen-sively we have more than enough to win the game.

Get behind the lads, it’ll be a massive 3 points if we can get them.

TOM TALKSTom KillickFirst Team Manager

Today we welcome in form Hitchin Town to the Tatnam for a clash which

sees us take on a side that if they win all their 5 games in hand could draw level with us at the top of the league . There is no need to emphasise the impor-tance of the game to the players and with a difficult away match on Boxing Day we need to make home advantage count tonight.

Last Saturday was bitterly disappointing and frustrating. It was a game I felt we should have won comfortably, partic-ularly having gone 2 nil in front. I thought we lost concentration and were sloppy in conceding 3 goals to a side which were struggling with injuries . Every point is precious when you are looking to win a league and we can’t afford to let points slip away in games where it is clear we are the superior side. Credit to Slough who were determined and never gave up. However, we need to be ruthless and maintain our concentration and physical effort at all times.

It was a real off day for every-one involved and I include myself

in that. I made bad decisions during the game and should have dealt with things differently . This group of players are very honest and don’t real-ly need telling when things are sub standard . I retain complete confidence in them as individuals and as a group.

On the positive side it was great to see Richard Gillespie back on the pitch and although he has a way to go before he is ready to start a game I hope he can get some more minutes tonight.

I will keep my notes brief tonight and hope that actions speak louder than words when the game starts. All that remains is for me to thank you all for your fantastic support throughout the year. I wish you a really happy Christmas and a successful new year.

LAST TIME OUT

With the league’s first and third highest scoring teams play-

ing a high score line looked likely – and so it proved in this six goal thriller. Poole raced in to a 2 goal lead but Slough fought back to take a point.

Poole made a great start when on 5 minutes Spetch’s ball found Wort whose shot was blocked by keeper Scott’s charge out but Dick-son showed great awareness when the ball fell kindly to him to find the empty net from 30 yards out. Poole’s early momentum continued when a good cross from Dickson found Lindsay whose shot was blocked. From a corner

Spetch’s powerful header found the net to give Poole a 2 goal lead on 26 minutes. Poole won a free kick and with the normal free kick taker absent, Spetch stepped up to blast goalbound but Scott made a great save. Poole had a series of corners in suc-cession with Brooks header cleared off the line. Having dominated the first half Poole were pegged back just be-fore half time when from a quick break Mpi found sub-stitute Hallahan whose strong shot went underneath Hutch-ings.

Slough started the sec-ond half brighter with more possession. Jepson got

LAST TIME OUTthe equaliser on 57 minutes when everyone appeared to stop for a potential foul with Hutchings only half stopping the shot which rolled in to the corner. Slough looked the more dangerous team now with Poole not replicating their first half performance. How-ever Poole took the lead again on 68 minutes when from a break Brooks found Wort who broke free and his shot hit the advancing Scott, but the ball fell to Wort who neatly found the net from distance. Just as it looked like Poole would see the game out Walker’s header from a Slough cross fell straight to Hallahan who smashed in to the net on 88 minutes.

The contrasting reactions of the managers to this point each could not have been more different. Slough’s Ball and Underwood were delight-ed with their team’s character, particularly given the lack of fully fit squad. Tommy Killick saw it as “2 points dropped”. This was best demonstrat-ed by the last corner of the match that Slough won. Tal-lack raced over to put the ball

down. Slough then just played short to keep possession – content with their point.

Good to see Gillespie back with a short run out. Devlin and Roberts were missed in this game.

Most of Poole’s closest rivals also drew so the gap was not closed. However Hitchin with all their games in hand did win. This makes Tuesday night’s game of even greater signifi-cance.

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Official website: www.pooletownfc.co.uk 32

Happy Christmas to all at Poole Town, and to our visitors today from

Hitchin. At this time of year life can

seem so busy that there is hardly time to draw breath and reflect. There’s so much to do, presents to buy, food and drink to consume, TV to watch, carols to sing – and of course football to enjoy.

Every year I’m asked if I’m ready for Christmas, and my an-swer is always the same – ‘no’! But that’s ok. The first Christmas in Bethlehem saw the hurly-bur-ly of a census for the occu-pying Roman authorities. The place was so busy that even a heavily-pregnant Mary couldn’t find anywhere to stay and had to give birth among the mess and smell of animals.

I love the fact that God be-came a human being in the form of Jesus – born as a baby in very humble surroundings, not in a clean and shiny palace or hospital. And the first visitors were shepherds – ordinary people like you and me. From that day to this, the invitation has been open to all – come and see.

You may be wondering why a football club would link up with a chaplain. Many clubs do, from non-league to Premier League. Football clubs are collections of people, from spectators to players, who experience the ups and downs of life, and my previous experience as a chap-lain is that people sometimes want to talk or pray about things as they arise. I am available for anyone who would like to get in touch. You can reach me on 01202-740235 or email [email protected] or see me at Tatnam.

A few words about me... My ‘day job’ is Vicar of St John’s Church on Ashley Road, where you will always be welcome. I am married to Becky, and we have two grown-up children. My football hats are red and white, but I confess that’s because I am a life-long Arsenal support-er - I will be at the Emirates on the 28th for the Bournemouth game but not wanting to see the points heading for the south coast!

Happy Christmas! Rev David Price

Saturdays result was disappointing in the respect that we could have and perhaps should have already sown

the points up before half time. However the fact that we were disappointed with a draw shows the high expectations we have and at the end of the day. Howev-er, we still remained 12 points clear of Chippenham and 15 points clear of Hichin who we play tonight, sitting in 6th place, although they have 5 games in hand over us. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get the win and put more points between us and the chasing pack!

I would like to thank The Funky Peach for Sponsoring the Match on Saturday and The Daniels/Wigmore Family who sponsored the Ball. Between them, they chose Jack Dickson as their Man of the Match.

For tonight’s game, The Funky Peach are once again Match Sponsor and the Ball has been sponsored by Rockley Park. Let’s hope you all have a great eve-ning and hopefully the right result.

We are now sold out for Match Spon-sors for the remainder of this season. We have a limited number of MatchBall pack-ages left this season, including the Kings Lynn game on 16th Jan and Biggleswade on the 6th Feb. Please check the website for availability. If you or your company would like to sponsor the Ball (£60), Play-er (£85), or know someone who would like to be a Mascot (£40) please get in contact. At the time of writing, Paul Ayley (Kitman) and Matt Fisher (Physio) are still looking for a Sponsor.

If you have never tried Tatnam Treb-ble, I promise you it will be the most

tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek our Martin Smith on the Cheese table at home games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disappointed. Orders being taken for Christmas.

The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board.

I would like to thank all of you who are using http://pooletownfootballclub.easy-search.org.uk/ as your search engine. We earn 1/2p per search and that amounts to a couple of pounds per week. That com-bined with http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/pooletownfootballclub/ we have raised over £1,000 for the club. Thanks to all those that support these initiatives.

We are planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is taking place on 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar for further details.

Happy Christmas to you and your loved ones and hope to see you all at Frome on Boxingday and then Weymouth here on Jan 2nd.
