CAPTAIN’S NOTESJamie WhiskenClub Captain

Facebook: ‘Poole Town Football Club (Official)’3

Afternoon all, so I’m writing this just be-fore the start of a

busy bank holiday weekend of football in which we visit Slough and then host Frome at home (today). We know in this league there’s no such thing as an easy game, we see upsets week in, week out and know we’ll be in for two tough games. Slough away last season was up there with our best performances of the year so to go there and do the same will take some doing but obviously that’s what we’ll set out to do. Frome always offer a stern test and we need to keep improving on our last two home fixtures especially so please get behind the lads as much as possible and drive us on!

Last Saturday we were dis-appointed in our performance against Merthyr, we are yet to be at our best this season but we know it’s not far off before we start fully clicking. They’re a good side and again I think

they will be up there come April.

Looking back at the result we’ll take the point and move on from a day we were a long way off our best. On a personal note is was a shame to get two yellow cards but that’s foot-ball, I reacted to a horrendous tackle on Pettefer which could have easily broken his leg, luckily he was fine, but obvi-ously with previous against Merthyr immediately you suspect the worse. Fingers crossed he’ll be okay for us come Saturday but we’ll see.

Enjoy your weekend of foot-ball and get behind the lads!

C’mon you Dolphins

BOARDROOM NOTESChris ReevesVice Chairman

Welcome to Tatnam for this after-noon’s Southern Premier League fixture with our friends and rivals

from Frome Town. I trust that their players officials and supporters had a good journey and that whatever the outcome of the tussle on the pitch that they enjoy their visit here and go away impressed by their reception and the hospitality extended, something we take great pride in as a Club.

Frome arrive today with a new manager in the hot seat. The Frome Board of Directors responding to a start of three draws and two defeats in the first five games of the season have terminated the position of previous manager Adrian Foster and appointed ex Paulton boss Nick Bunyard. Nick is a former Frome player who was in the side that won the Western League Div 1 Championship in 2002. He went on to play for Chippenham and Paulton. He took Paulton into the Premier Division the season before last and had an encouraging first campaign before resigning in April. He has already appointed a new first team coach in ex Chippenham, Bath, Paulton and Larkhall player Josh Jeffries.

Teams always seem to have a new spring in their step under a new boss so our lads will have to be ready for that this afternoon. Bunyard has been away on business so it was intended that goalkeeping coach Lloyd Chanberlain would take the team in their game v Kettering on Saturday-no mention can be made of Frome’s fate in that game or our own at Slough for that matter as these notes had to be written before the weekend for obvious reasons.

The home draw with Merthyr was not without its good points-Marvin’s superb opening goal and the brilliant finish by Luke Roberts to salvage a point from the game and also the bright performances from all three substitutes-Luke took the eye for his goal but the cameo displays from Jamie Davidson and Alan Connell promised great things from both those players in the games to come. There

were of course disappointing fea-tures-not least our second successive red card and rest assured that disci-pline and the other areas to learn from arising out of this game have been identified and worked on this week with the players during two good training sessions and also within the confines of the dressing room.

The coaching side of the club has seen a change this week with the departure of Shaun Brooks and the appointment in his stead as new first team coach of his son Callum. Shaun was honest enough to tell us that he was desperate to get back into the pro game and in the interests of continuity and certainty it was felt by both sides right to make a change. We part on the best of terms with our very grateful thanks to Shaun for the work that he did while he was with us and for the coaching legacy he has left behind. Cal-lum was a compelling candidate to replace Shaun. We have known him for a while now as a result of the work he has done with our u21s. He will fill both the role of first team coach and u21 manager. We are delighted to have him involved and look forward to a long and successful association with him.

Next week we travel to Kings Lynn for the longest trip of the season and are making it an overnight stop to try and ensure the play-ers are in the best possible condition to get a result from the game.

I gather that Pippa is starting another “Last Man Standing” competition-great fun and a chance to earn yourself some money whilst helping the Club at the same time-see Pippa or any Club Director for further details.

Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50

tickets. Chris

The visitors from South Wales return with a hard earned point at Tatnam Farm.

Merthyr came to Tatnam as the 7th placed team in the league, with an identical record of two wins, one draw, and one defeat. Only Goal Dif-ference separated the two sides.

The Dolphins sped out the blocks, with former Poole favourite, Rhys Bag-gridge, conceding a corner. Poole got off to another brilliant start as Brooks used his aerial prowess to head home from a well whipped in Devlin cor-ner in the third minute. Shortly after, Richard Gillespie was brought down just outside the box, earning Merthyr’s No.5, Jarrad Wright, the first booking of the game. However, the resultant free kick was wasted by Poole, failing to capitalise on a good chance.

Gillespie proved to be a thorn in Merthyr’s side, as he caused multi-ple problems by making good runs into the box, but unfortunately, they bore no fruit. Slowly Poole’s grip on the early stages of the game waiv-

ered – Merthyr were now attacking in numbers, as well as having numerous attacks. One of these attacks resulted in a corner, which was wasted.

However, the Martyrs’ first spell of domination in the game finally resulted in a goal, as Poole failed to clear, and the only non-Welsh player in the Merthyr side, ex-Swansea City player Guillem Bauzà (of Spain) struck a half-volley into the back of Nick Hutchings’ net in the 19th minute of the game. With the scores level, Merthyr slowly became the better team, but only slightly. Hutchings did well to close down an unmarked Merthyr player before making another block shortly after.

Around the 27th minute mark, Mer-thyr had a strong appeal for a penalty, but this was waved away by the ref-eree Louis Marks of Denmead. In the following minute, a well struck cross found the head of Kayne McLaggen, who was unmarked, but only manage to horribly miss the goal with a looping header over. After half an hour, it was

Page 9: Poole Town v Frome Town

MATCH REPORT MATCH REPORTclear who the better team was, but in the last 15 minutes of the first half the best chance came from a Devlin free kick, which was flicked just wide by Jamie Whisken. In the 42nd minute, Merthyr had the strongest penalty claim of the half, as even the Lines-man flagged for a foul, but again the Referee let play continue, dismissing the claim.

One a piece at the half time break, and Poole were lucky to go in all level. There was only one switch at half time, Luke Roberts coming off for Richard Gillespie. It seemed whatever the Poole manager had said to his troops in the interval clearly had some affect, as Poole quickly won a corner, but it came to nothing. Another attack resulted in an ambitious overhead kick by Marvin Brooks, who fired just wide.

Slowly Merthyr took control of the game again, with two corners having to be punched away by Hutchings. Luke Holmes and Jamie Gleeson came off for Alan Connell and Jamie Davidson in the 61st minute.

The game became slightly more even as Poole had a couple of count-er attacks, before Merthyr broke and scored almost a carbon copy of their first goal , with an even better strike by Elliot Scotcher. It looked like Mer-thyr’s efforts had guaranteed them 3 points to take back home to Penydar-ren Park, but substitute Luke Roberts had other ideas – Jamie Davidson drew a foul from the Merthyr defence, with the free kick taken by Devlin, who returned the ball to Davidson, who set up Roberts to beat three defenders with some quick feet, before cooly slotting home into the bottom right of

the goal, leaving Tom Bradley hapless and hopeless.

This set up an interesting ending to the game – only for a recklessly mistimed tackle by Merthyr substitute Kyle Patten, lunging into Carl Pettefer, earning him a straight red card. Jamie Whisken was also dismissed for a second bookable offence, meaning Michael Walker finished the game as Captain, and both teams with only ten men. After the fracas between the two teams over the poor challenge, the game ended in an anti-climax,with Lewis Tallack with a rare foray into the oppositions box heading wide. Poole perhaps lucky to get a point, but it was a tight affair that could have seen a winner from either team grab all three.

The Fan’s View

Jack Tanner gives his view on the match:

Poole laboured to a point against Merthyr Town, which may turn out

to be a good point at the end of the season. Two well struck goals from Merthyr came after a well worked Poole corner, before Davidson did well with some quick feet to set up

Roberts to equalise.

Tom KillickFirst Team Manager

Today we welcome Frome Town to the Tatnam. They are always difficult opponents but we have get back to winning our home games after dropping points against both Chippenham and Merthyr.

The players know they were be-low par against Merthyr. I take a sig-nificant degree of the blame for that as the shape of the side wasn’t right and we never really looked comfort-able with or without the ball. We had a fairly long discussion about that and some other issues and tried to improve things this week in training. Without going into detail we feel we have been guilty of being too slow in our build up play and not being quick or positive in our passing. I am hop-ing that you will some improvement today and we can be more penetra-tive and create more chances whilst retaining a real resilience which has been our forte over the years.

Shaun Brooks has left the club as he wants to take up a role with a professional team. That is disap-pointing after being with us for such a short time but I respect his deci-sion and wish him well for the future.

It was important that we moved swiftly to replace Shaun and we have done that by already ap-pointing Callum Brooks as Head of Coaching. Callum is someone I have known for a number of years and is a well respected and highly

qualified coach who has done very good things over at New Milton. I am pleased and excited to have him with us.

The squad of players has already been tested with some niggling inju-ries we have picked up and will be particularly stretched next Saturday at Kings Lynn when Michael Walker and Jamie Whisken miss out due to suspension. Thankfully we have real quality that can step in and that is always the key to being successful in trying to win a league.

The directors have once again done the players proud by allowing them to travel to Kings Lynn on the Friday night as I do feel its simply to far to go up and back in the same day . An overnight stay gives us the best possible preparation for the game and we need to be sure we take advantage of that.

I see that in the FA cup we have been drawn at home to either Barn-staple or Bridgewater. It is great to get a home draw in a competition that offers so much both in prestige and financial rewards. We would all love a run in the competition but we all know that nothing in football come easily and must not get car-ried away.

Page 41: Poole Town v Frome Town

Well we managed a draw against one of the fancied sides in Merthyr, but today we need to

go one better. These notes were written before the Slough game so do not have the benefit of that result. Hopefully we got another important away win under our belt and we can continue that way today. Come on you Dolphins, we believe!

I would like to thank Portman Stone for Sponsoring the Merthyr Match and picking Marvin Brooks as their Man of the Match. Unfortunately we did not get a photo as Marvin took too long doing his hair. Peter and Olive Reeves sponsored the Ball and in return have secured themselves a reserved seat in the stand for the rest of the season. A couple of others have since followed suit. If you would like to do likewise, then please get in touch. Also, a big thank you goes to Brynn Vaughan for being our Mascot on Saturday, who asked to have his photo taken with Goal Keeper Nick Hutchings.

For today’s game, Rockley Park return to Tatnam and have Sponsored the Match and the Ball has been sponsored by City-IR who have agreed to sponsor the ball for a package of games. Todays Mascots are the nephews of Matt McGuire, who recently walked from Tatnam to Old Traf-ford, Manchester, fundraising for Bobby, son of Martin Smith (Cheeso). We hope you all enjoy the afternoon and hopefully see a Poole Town win.

If you or your company would like to sponsor a Match, Ball, Player, or know someone who would like to be a Mascot please get in contact. We have plen-ty of availability. At the time of writing, Hutch, JD, Marvin and Luke Roberts are all looking for Sponsors and we are looking for Sponsors and Mascot for the FA Cup game on Saturday 12st September.

We will finally launch the new fans shirt (second strip) today. As it’s a home game, we will not be wearing it, but you will be able to collect your pre-orders from Robtheshirt in the Supporters Club Club-shop. If you have not placed a pre-order, replicas of both the new first strip and the fans shirt can be ordered at the Clubshop today and orders can be placed online shortly. There are all kinds of other bar-gains to be had in the Clubshop, so give Rob’s Pod a visit before you leave today.

The annual golf day is on Friday 25th September 2015 when we will be return-ing to Canford Magna once again. We are almost at our full quota of teams, so if you are interested, contact [email protected] for further infor-mation as soon as possible. The annual Sportsmans Dinner will be on Thursday November 12th with details to follow.
