I am an environmental planner studying how informal built environments can be sustainable, and how planning institutions- especially those involved in infrastructure- are central to this endeavor. My goal is to set up longitudinal research on decentralized ecological infrastructure in informal settlements, partnering with local urban designers, engineers, regulatory agencies and universities.

My dissertation discloses the link between stormwater drain-adjacent ‘slums’ in Delhi and a major environmental planning issue- pollution in river Yamuna. I explain the biophysical impact of these settlements versus ‘formal’ land uses upstream along the drains, and flaws in the institutional framework for formal and informal infrastructure provision in these settlements that result in social inequity and environmental degradation. I built a repository of basin, city, and settlement-scale spatial data on ArcGIS from >200 secondary sources, > 100 IRB-approved interviews with settlement residents, NGOs, and municipal agency officials, and detailed water quality monitoring data for a subset of Delhi’s stormwater drains.

I held research assistantships in sequencing & expression of secretion proteins in Arabidopsis, designing microscopic landscapes to study dispersal & population survival of protozoa Tetrahymena, studying how predation cues incite physiological responses that increase toxicity risk in Arabian tadpoles, delineating the stakeholder network for Canada’s first National Urban Park, and studying what municipal codes of the 50 worst-infested US cities say about mitigating bedbug infestations.
