Update from our ChairKia ora whānau We are only six months away from ratification, but there is still a lot to do! It is just around the corner and will be here before we know it.
The Trust are in the midst of finalising
the Deed of Settlement. The Deed of
Settlement represents the full and final
agreement between Whakatōhea and the
Crown to settle the historical breaches by
the Crown against Whakatōhea including
the historical claims lodged in the
Waitangi Tribunal.
Once this is completed, the WPCT
will initial the Deed of Settlement with
the Crown. By initialling the Deed of
Settlement the WPCT are confirming our
support for the Deed and to move to the
next stage which is for Whakatōhea Iwi
to Vote.
From there, it is up to you to vote in
support of Settlement. We urge you to
do this, and not wait another 10-20 years
before we get another chance to negotiate
with the Crown.
Support for Settlement is support for
Whakatōhea to push out the waka and
start our journey of cultural revitalisation
economic renaissance and development
pathways for our people.

October’s ZUI:Settlement & Rangatahi We had an awesome range of speakers for
our rangatahi ZUI, including Peedi Tai who
Zoomed in from the Gold Coast with her
views on Settlement. Here is a link to all
our awesome panel whānau here.
And if you haven’t seen it yet, here is a link
to the Settlement and Rangatahi ZUI here.
The Trusts view is that this parallel process, Settlement and a Waitangi Tribunal Inquiry, gives Whakatōhea a Win-Win situation.
Usually when an Iwi’s claims are settled, the
Crown removes the ability of the Waitangi
Tribunal to continue looking at these claims.
Whakatōhea are in a unique position where the
Crown have agreed that the Waitangi Tribunal
Inquiry can continue even if Whakatōhea Vote
in support of completing the Settlement. This
has never been done before and means we can
make the most of the Settlement now, whilst
leveraging the opportunities around the Harbour
and Aquaculture developments, AND having our
claims heard by the Waitangi Tribunal.

Trustee Profiles – introducing...Parehuia Mafi — Ngāti Rua Hapū RepresentativeI had the privilege of being raised in Omarumutu and our whānau home stands alongside those of the Ngāti Rua whānau who continue to live on our tūrangawaewae. Ngāti Rua hapū has always maintained that our whenua is a place where we can all
connect, live and thrive. My role on the Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Trust is to ensure that this becomes a reality for all Ngāti Rua whānau in the near future.
I have travelled the world as a national sports representative, and I have completed studies in iwi and hapū development, policy and health sciences. As part of the national E Tū whānau violence prevention strategy I have been able to follow my passion of working alongside whānau, hapū, iwi and hāpori / communities. As a Māmā, kaimahi and hapū trustee/committee member I have seen the devastating impact of colonisation upon our people and their resilience, strength and commitment to overcome this legacy and take control of their own destiny. I am honoured to be elected as one of our hapū representatives alongside Linda Grave, we are both dedicated to the tasks set down by our whānau of Ngāti Ruatākena hapū and more importantly to a future full of possibilities for our tamariki and mokopuna. “Kia nuku, nuku, Nukutere”.
Dave Ngatai Ngāti Tamahaua Hapū Representative
I’m very passionate about settling the Whakatōhea Raupatu and Comprehensive claims with the crown. Many of our tīpuna have passed that started this process.
They would have loved to have seen our claims sorted and their Moko’s, Rangatahi and Whānau thriving in a rich, prosperous and vibrant Whakatōhea community. As a united Whakatōhea Iwi we can achieve this and I will do all the hours needed, to get it done and dusted for our Tīpuna, Whānau, Rangatahi and Moko’s. Our future generations.
