HeroesWho we choose as heroes tells us what our culture really values.

Our heroes are not just objects of a passing infatuation; they are themen and women who embody our view of the highest humanpotential.

HeroesThe one common factor in all these mythological accounts,

however, is how the hero does not act on his own behalf but on thebehalf of others. He acts for the good of friends, family community,and/or country, with no thoughts of glory or fame or, especially, nancial gain.

In some myths, in fact, the hero literally descends into the fabledUnderworld in order to retrieve a lover, friend, or relative. Yet thishero, again, journeys not for himself but for others, even when goinginto the darkest regions of Hades.

Paul uses Timothy and Epaphroditus as examples of people in the

faith community who are should be considered heroes by Christ-followers . . . . .

These individuals clearly live out the values of humility andselessness that Paul has been talking about in this section of theletter.

They serve as examples of what it means to work out yoursalvation with fear and trembling in the context of community andmission.

The chart on the following slide will examine three areas of a

humble mindset held by Timothy and Epaphroditus.

    TIMOTHY EPAPHRODITUS

    Philipians 2:2-5

Be like-minded,having the same love, being one in spiritand purpose.

TO PAUL For I have no one elseof kindred spirit

    my brother and fellowworker and fellowsoldier, who is alsoyour messenger andminister to my need;

Do nothing out ofselsh ambition orvain conceit, but in

    humility considerothers better thanyourselves.

    TO

PHILIPPIANSwho will genuinely beconcerned for yourwelfare. For they allseek after their owninterests, not those ofChrist Jesus.

because he waslonging for you all andwas distressedbecause you hadheard that he was sick.

ac o you s oulook not only to yourown interests, but

    also to the interestsof others.

Your attitude shouldbe the same as thatof Christ Jesus:

    TO THE

MISSIONBut you know of hisproven worth, that heserved with me in thefurtherance of thegospel like a childserving his father.

hold men like him inhigh regard; becausehe came close todeath for the work ofChrist, risking his lifeto complete what wasdecient in your

    service to me.Sunday, April 18, 2010

Sow What? Our culture inuences our thinking about what makes a

hero and the culture of the empire is drastically differentfrom the culture of the Kingdom.

    1. What culture is currently inuencing your view of whatmakes a hero?

We celebrate what we value. Take a minute to think aboutthose you consider to be heros (celebrated people). Wecan have heroes we dont even realize . . . people who weinternally aspire to be like or want to emulate.

    1. What aspects of your celebrated people do you value?2. Are these values in line with the things we see Paul

    saying should be celebrated?
