The Meaning of Joining the Buddhist Youth Group

How does one find out about and join Buddhist Youth Group? It can be illustrated by the following shortstory:

"When I was young, I would go with my parents to the temple to worship Buddha. There I saw groups of

people in uniforms of gray shirt and navy blue pants/skirts. Everyone had the Lotus insignia and the

Buddhist Youth Group symbol on their shirts. The thing that captured my attention the most was wheneveryone stood in one by circle and played exciting games. After that, they all got into small groups for their

lessons of the day. At the end of an eventful day, everyone got back into the big circle, held hands and sang

the 'Good-bye' song. I noticed that they usually lingered and talked and played games after it was over, no

    one wanted to leave!

With these observations in mind, I asked my parents for permission to join the Youth Group. From mycontinuing attendance (of three months), I received my application for admittance to become an officialmember of the Buddhist Youth Group."

In Buddhist Youth Group, the members are divided into groups of people of same age group category andgender. For example, a seven year-old boy would be grouped with boys ages six through twelve. A fourteen

year-old girl would be group with girls ages thirteen through eighteen. They study, play, and grow to truly

care for one another in the love of a disciple of Buddha. In addition to having new friends, there are other

advantages. In Buddhist Youth Group, there are leaders that are loving and caring. They are always readyto teach us to become a good citizen, a good son/daughter, a good friend, and a good Buddhist. We learn

motor skill, practice living with nature, and study the experiences of life in order to become a courageous

and happy person. There are many good friends in the Youth Group that are always ready to lend a hand

    when needed.

When joining Buddhist Youth Group, one needs to attend regularly and promptly. Study hard and listen to

    the guidances of the leaders.

    The Slogan of Oanh Vu

The slogan of Oanh V are Concord, Trust, and Joy.

    1. Concord: Concord is to be in accord with everyone, not to dispute or quarrel with each other. In a family,

the young ones always listen to the older ones, and the older ones must always love and care for theyounger. At school, you need to be a good student, a role model, and do not fight with classmates. When in

the Buddhist Youth Association, you always get along with every body, listen to the leaders as well as those

who are older, and help those who are new to the group.2. Trust: Trust is to love and have faith in someone. You always believe in Buddha and his teachings to feel

closer to him, love others as you love yourself. You need to trust the elders, your leaders and, especially, in

Buddha. Buddha always guides you to become a good person.

    3. Joy: Joy is pleasure. A person with a pleasant personality will make friends easily and people like to be

    associated with.

Being an Oanh V in the Buddhist Youth Association, you always be happy, trust the others especially inBuddha, and live together with other beings in unity.

    Rules of Oanh Vu

As Oanh Vu you need to memorize, understand and practice the three rules of the Oanh Vu.

    1. Always Remember Buddha: Buddha loves everyone of us and all living creatures. In remembering Buddha

you will have the feeling that he is always with you and you will follow his step to do good thing in life.

    2. Always Obey And Love Your Parents, And Get Along With Your Siblings: Your parents raise and care for

you since you were born, teach you right from wrong with the only hope that you become a productive

citizen. To express your gratitude for all the things your parents have been doing for you, you need to obeyand love your parent. Living in the same family, brothers and sisters have to love and help each others. You

have to obey older brothers and sisters and be concessive with the younger members in the family. In doing

so, you also show your love for your parents because if siblings don't get along, parents are not happy.

    3. Always Love Human Beings And Living Creatures: We suffer when pain is inflicted, we want to eat when

we are hungry, animals do the same things. In other words, all beings have feelings. Therefore, we shouldlove each others. If you show your love toward others, they will do the same to you. By expressing your love

towards others, you will become Buddha's good disciple.

    A Compassionate Deer

Once upon a time, in a forest near the Indus river, India, there was a deer with beautiful golden skin thatcould talk. All other animals in the forest respected and loved the Golden Deer for its kind heart.

One day, the Golden Deer went to the river to see the flooding, he heard a voice asking for help of personholding on a log, which was washed away by strong current. With the gentle nature, the deer could not resist

in helping, he jumped into the river to save the drowning man. Drained of energy after performing the gooddeed, the Golden Deer still cared for the unconscious victim. He stayed with him and kept other animalsaway. After a while, the man regained his consciousness and awoke. He was very happy to be alive but did

not know who had saved his life. Looking around for someone, he only saw the Golden Deer, he understood

immediately. He then knelt and bowed the Golden Deer with gratitude. The Golden Deer told him to go

home with the family and asked the man not to let anyone know the Golden Deer lived in that forest.

During that time, at the King's palace, the Queen dreamed of a Golden Deer could talk and was spreading

Buddha's teachings. She told the King of her dream and asked that the Golden Deer be captured.Immediately the King commanded:

    - "Whoever can capture the Golden Deer unharmed will be rewarded generously."

When the man whose life was saved by the Golden Deer heard the news, especially the rewards, he instantly

forgot his promise to the Golden Deer. Greed had taken over, he guided the King to the Golden Deer'sdwelling place.

After the King and his soldiers got there, the Golden Deer asked the King with suprise:

    - "How did you know where to find me?" The King then pointed at the man and said:

    - "He guided me here." As he said it he turned to look at the man to see that his face was covered with blood.

    The Golden Deer spoke:

    - "That is the consequence of an ungrateful action, forgetting those who had helped us. I saved him fromdrowning in that river!".

Understood what had happened, the King was upset. He ordered the man to be executed immediately. The

Golden Deer then asked the King to forgive the man. The King was touched and admired the Golden Deer'scompassion. He revoked his order and freed the man. He also dismissed the idea of capturing the Golden

Deer and forbade people to harm the Golden Deer.

Lesson Taught by A Compassionate Oanh Vu Bird

A long time ago, there was a very hot-tempered king. For pleasure, he liked to hunt and kill animals. One

day during his hunting, the king saw a fox running into a bush. He ordered his soldiers to find the fox. However, the fox was found nowhere.

Angrily, the king gave out an order to burn down the forest. Watching the tree burned dow and hearing the

animals groan in pain, the king greatly satisfied.

However, above the burning flame appeared a white Oanh V bird trying to put out the fire. The Bird flew toa nearby river and dipped itself in the water. It then flew back to the burning area and shook the water off itfeathers, hoping that the spraying of the water would extinguish the fire and save the injured animals.

Seeing the Bird's action, the king was touch by the Bird's compassion. He felt ashamed by his mistake and

quickly ordered his soldiers to put out the fire. From then on, the king prohibited anyone to hunt in thatforest.

Oanh V bird was one of the former lives of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Piousness of a Oanh Vu Bird

A long time ago on Tuyt Sn mountain, there was a Oanh V bird whose parents were blind. Because theparents were not able to find their food, the Oanh V bird always look for fresh, ripe fruits to offer to itsparents. At this time, there was a farmer who made a vow: "The fine wheats that I have just harvested are

available for all living creatures to use". Hearing these joyous words, the Oanh V bird often went to thefarm to bring home fresh wheat for its parent.

One day, while the farmer was checking his wheat, he saw the Oanh V bird in his wheat field, the farmer setup a trap to caught the Oanh V bird.

The Oanh V bird pleaded: "Your kindness is the reason why I am able to come here and take your wheats. Why are you now catching me?"

The farmer asked, "What are you taking wheats for?"

The Oanh V bird then replied, "My parents are blind so I bring these wheats home to them."

After listening to the Oanh V bird's explanation, the farmer became emotionally touched and sympatheticby the Bird's pious behavior. Upon releasing the Oanh V bird, the farmer gave it permission to take asmuch wheat as it needed from this day forward.

In their past lives, Shakyamuni Buddha was the Oanh V bird and X Li Pht Bodhisattva was the farmer.

The History Of Buddha(From Birth To The DepartingFrom His Family To Become aBuddhist Priest)

Buddha's real name is Tt t a with the title Thch Ca. He is the son of King Tnh Phn and Queen MaGia of Ca T La V city of India.

The Prince was born on the full moon day of February (Indian Calendar) during Queen Ma Gia's visit at the

Lm T Ni garden. Buddha's birthday is celebrated on April 15th (Luna Calendar) by Vietnamese. He hasthirty-two (32) special features that were predicted by a prophet. It was also predicted that he would become

a Buddhist monk and later Buddha.

He was very intelligent and very good in martial arts and literature; all his teachers bow in admiration.

Even though he lived in the most magnificent palace, especially built for him by the King's order, his love forbeings who suffer the four miseries (birth, aged, sickness, and death) kept him from enjoying the good life.

He always thought of ways to save all lives from unhappiness and miseries.

    14

Thinking that the family tie would keep the Prince's intention of becoming a Buddhist priest, the King

requested that he gets married. At seventeen (17), the Prince married Da Du La and together borned ason named La Hu La.

With the prophet's prediction still fresh in mind, the King used every excuse to keep the Prince from havingany contact with outside world. However, after pleading with the King several times, the Prince got his wish

to go out. What he saw after leaving the palace was not pleasant.

Whenever he went, he witnessed people suffering from the miseries of life.

After the visit outside the palace and seeing the unpleasantness of life, Prince Tt t a needed no othermotivation. On the night of February 8th (Luna Calendar), while everyone else was deep asleep, he left hisfamily and wealth to start out a journey in hope of finding ways to end life's sufferings. He was nineteen (19)

    years of age.

    Pondering About Buddhas

When joining the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, the first thing one need to practice is rule numberone (#1) of the Oanh V:

I think of Buddhas. This rule is taught by the leaders of the Youth Group to guide one to understand moreabout Buddhas. Before practicing this rule, one needs to understand the meaning and methods of pondering

    about Buddhas.

What is pondering to Buddhas? It is a way to remember the names of all Buddhas, their characters, and tolearn from their teachings.

How to ponder about Buddhas. When pondering, one should not think of anything else but Buddhas.

Methods of pondering about Buddhas. There are several ways to ponder about Buddhas. One can ponder out

loud, whisperingly, or silently. On the other hand, one can ponder visually. However, at the Oanh V's level,

one only needs to learn the following two most basic methods:1. Silent pondering

    2. Chanting pondering out loud

What are the benefits of pondering about Buddhas? To calm one's mind, expand one's wisdom, and eliminateimpure thoughts that would harm oneself and others. Always remember Buddha's teachings, think and do

good deeds. When pondering about Buddhas, one can eliminate defilements, build up merits, and feel closer

    to Buddhas.

The methods of pondering about Buddhas are used to guide one to think of Buddhas, do good deeds, avoidbad actions, practice the good virtues of the Buddhas and Boddhisatvas, and show the qualities of a

Buddhist in order to emphasize the goals of Buddhism.

The Meaning Of Worshipping Buddha and Chanting Buddha's Sutra

    I. Worshipping Buddha: When you worship Buddha you must stand up straight to idolize, think about andstay pure, the prostrate yourself to Buddha.

When prostrating yourself to Buddha you must put your hands together in front of your chest, bows your

head, put your feet together, and slowly kneels to the ground opening your hands as if you were raiseBuddha's feet. Then, bend forward laying your head onto the palms of your hands.

In the past, when Buddha was still on earth his disciples from monarchs to servants, if they were fortunateenough to see he would kneel down, embrace his feet and lay their head on them to express their admiration,

today we worship Buddha in the same manner.

Before worshipping Buddha we should bathe and cleanse ourselves, burn incense, stand straight with hands

together in front of our face, look to the statue of Buddha in order to remember him. When we prostrate

ourselves we express our happiness just as if we were fortunate enough to see him.

II. Chanting Buddha's Sutra: Chanting means to read aloud with rhythm and sincere respect the Buddha's

    teaching.

As we are praying we think of Buddha and his teachings.

The teachings of Buddha and the Bodhistavas are precious and can help get rid of your sins and desires.

Such teachings need to be memorized, understood and followed. For those reasons we should chanting

    Buddha's teaching.

Chanting Buddha's teaching allow for you to be calm, avoid bad things, do good things, is beneficial to us

and others, and reminds us to always follow Buddha's teachings and to repent our sin.

    - "Your majesty, there is only one kind of medication that could cure the King but it is very hard to find." The

Prince was very pleased and asked:

    - What medication is it? If it can cure my father, no matter how tough it is, I will find ways to get it. The

    - It is the brain of a person who from the time he was little is very pious to his parents and love people of all

    - In that case, can it be my brain? Can I use it to cure my father from this illness. The traitor overjoyed with

The Story of Buddha's Past Life

    Kind People Are Rare

Long ago, there was a boy who seemed sluggish but very intelligent. He was very kind and polite, and can

understand the languages among the birds when they talk to each other.

The boy discovered a quiet place to practice his religion, but unfortunately his dream was overturned when

he had to move in with the rich owner and became a salesperson selling things everywhere in order to

    survive.

One day he and his owner stopped under a big tree to rest and eat lunch. Suddenly a group of black ravenfrom somewhere flew by and landed on top of the tree and cried loudly. The boy heard the black raven's

cries but did not do anything. Instead he just sat there and laughed. For that reason, the owner became

suspicious, but he did not say anything.

When night came, the owner called the boy out to ask about the situation occurred at noon:

    - Why are you laughing when you heard the black raven cried?

Listening to the owner's question, the boy truthfully answered:

    - Dear sir, I have learned some magic therefore I can understand what the ravens were crying about. They

were so hungry and wondered how can they eat you. They told me to kill you first to steal the precious stone

in your pocket and then afterward they can eat you.

After hearing the boy, the owner got scared but knowing that the boy is honest, so he bravely asked:

    - Why didn't you take the precious stone in my pocket and become a rich person?

    The boy immediately responded:

    - Dear sir, jewelry and money that belong to you are not what I have worked for and earned. Killing a

person to steal property is not doing a good deeds. Moreover, you have helped me so much in the past, how

can I because of vanity forget the meaning in a relationship.

The owner was so impressed after listen to the boy. From that time on, the owner took good care of the boyas if he was his own blooded-brother, and given the boy whatever he needs.

The Boy is Buddha's previous life.

    The Rabbit Respects Religion

Long time ago there was a very intelligent and disobedient rabbit. Day and night, it always besides a monk

Not very long when the weather changes, wind and torrential rain brought the cold air to the bone that the

flowers and fruits rotten and died. The rabbit searched everywhere but it cannot locate any food to offer to

the monk. As a result, the monk suffered from hunger and cold. He decided to pack everything and headed

back to the temple for a period of time, and perhaps next spring, he will be back in the forest to continue his

    practice.

The rabbit was deeply saddened at the monk's decision because if the monks leave, it will be the one here,

and there is nobody to explain the Dharma to it so it too can also practice. The rabbit thought after all thistime, the monk has been teaching me everyday. Now the monk is deeply in trouble and I cannot do anything

to help him so to repay him.

After thinking it over, the rabbit disappeared into the forest to search for food but it cannot find the foodanywhere. The rabbit was so depressed and said to the monk:

    - My dear monk, I found the food. Can you set up the fire so we can barbecue it?

The monk then did what the rabbit said. He gathered up the woods and started the fire. When the flame was

hot and up high, the rabbit quickly jumped into the fire and said:

    - I am the food. Please eat me so you will not starve.

The monk shockingly grabbed the rabbit out of the fire and asked why did it does that.

    The rabbit sobbed and said:

    - I have owed you so much. Now facing with hunger and starvation, you have to temporarily leave this place

that makes me feel very uncomfortable. Therefore, I sacrifice myself so you can have something to eat to stay

    healthy to continue your practice.

The monk was touched by what the rabbit said. They love the rabbit even more and forget the idea aboutreturning to the temple. He decided to stay in the forest to continue his practice, and not even worried about

    starvation or suffering.

The rabbit that respects religion is Buddha's previous life.

The History Of Thich Ca Buddha(From Monkshood to Nirvana)

During the middle of the night on February, prince Tt t a on his horse Kin Trc along with his closet

servant Xa Nc left the palace. Arriving at the A N Ma river he cut his hair, took off his jewelry and gavethem to Xa Nc to bring back to King Tnh Phn. The King was to be told that the prince was on a quest tofind a method of freeing beings from all sufferings. On his journey he met a hunter and traded clothing withhim, leaving behind his life of royalty.

He first studied all the different existing religions and methods in the country. Upon arriving in the city of

Vng X, of the Bt Gi forest he studied with the angel the method of hardship, in order to get into thedifferent heavenly places. However, he saw that it was not the correct method for ending all sufferings. Up

north, in the city of T X L he studied the method of getting to the heavenly place call V Tng Xfrom ALa La. Still, he decided that was not the correct method to end all sufferings. Afterwards, he studied themethod to get to the heavenly place of Phi Tng Phi Phi Tng X. Yet again, he decided that it was not

    the correct method.

After three tries with the different methods he realized that there was no correct method at the time and that

he would have to find the correct method on his own. He went to the u Lu Tn forest south of the Tngu mountains by the Ni Lin river with the group of Kiu Trn Nhthat consisted of five persons. Theystudied and practiced the method of hardship for six years. Its force himself to such an extent that he wouldonly eat one grain of rice or sesame seed each day. One day he fainted due to the hardship. At that time a

person named Tu X saw him and brought him some milk to drink. When he regained conscientious herealized that the method of hardship was not the correct method. He the bathed in the river, sat under thetree B and meditated vowing, "If I can not find the correct method to end all sufferings I will never leavethis tree."

He intends seeking a method to end all sufferings. The demons were afraid that he would achieve his goal so

they went to distract him, but he was determined to achieve his goal and so was successful in ignoring all

    their distractions.

After forty-nine days, on the 8th of December, of meditation under the B tree he found the true andcorrect method and became the Buddha with the title Thch Ca Mu Ni.Thch Ca Buddha went to Lc Uyn garden and preached the Four Noble Paths to five friends who studiedthe method of hardship with him, the group of Kiu Trn Nh. They then became disciples of Thch CaBuddha. From that point on the Three Jewels arise Buddha, Dharma, and Shanga (Pht, Php v Tng).Buddha preached for more than forty-nine years. He assists many people of all classes and characters.

While still on earth he preached in India during the nine warm months. The other three months he stayedindoor to practice.Knowing that he was about to reach Nirvana, on February 15 of the Luna calendar, he gathered all his

disciples, at Cu Ly in the Xa Ni forest, hang the hammock between two Song Th trees, to preach to hisdisciples for the last time. He then gave his attire to his disciple Ca Dip so that he can continue teachingBuddha's methods. He then said good-bye to everyone. He was eighty years old.

    The Unforgettable Bridge

In the green forest part of Hy M Lp Sn mountain in India, there exist a giant mango tree growing along theside of Hng river.

On the tree, there lived thousand of monkeys all under one nation led by the beautiful King Monkey with an

incredible strength. They lived by themselves away from the rest of the world, and their main source of food ismango. When the mango season arrived, the mango is at its full-sized, has a sweet scent, and delicious. The

mango tree can feed the entire monkey nation.

The King Monkey was very careful. It orders all the monkeys to eat all the mango when the mangos were stillgreen, never wait until they are ripe. When it gave orders, all the monkeys followed. Unfortunately, something

unexpected happened. One huge mango was covered by ants nest until it was so ripe that it fell into the river

flowing along the water. The twisted water led the mango to Ba La Ni country into the King's swimming areawhere he was bathing. The King tried the fruit and loved it so much that the next days he ordered his people rowthe boats along the river in searching for the mango tree.

After three long tired days, the King and his people located the giant mango tree and also saw the monkeys on thetree swinging from branches to other branches. The King goes upset so he orders his people to kill all the

monkeys for eating all the delicious mangos in front of him. But the sky was getting dark, so they have to startfirst thing tomorrow.

That night the monkeys were so afraid except the King Monkey who maintained very calm. It quietly sneaked out

to the branch that leaned toward the river, then used all its strength swinging itself to the other side of the river. The King Monkey was overjoyed when he found section of the ropes. He tied different sections together formingone rope. He then tied one end of the rope to the tree and the other end onto himself. The King Monkey himself

the swung himself back to the mango tree with the purpose of forming a rope bridge to save the other monkeys.

Unfortunately, the rope was too short. With his two front legs, he stretched to grab one of the branches thatstraightened the rope and he himself filled in the missing gap between the tree and the rope.

The King Monkey then ordered the entire monkey nation to quickly cross the river. The monkeys felt awkward ofhaving to step on the King Monkey. Some monkeys were touched by the King Monkey's action that they burst into

tears, but they had no choice. There was a big monkey by the name Davadatta who is very jealous of the KingMonkey, so it stomped on the King Monkey as it crossed the river. The King Monkey was so much in pain that itbit its teeth to let Davadatta cross with an effort to help rescue him.

After crossing the river, Davadatta looked back with tears in his eyes, and felt regret when he saw the King

Monkey did not show any movement and his hair was falling all over.

When morning arrived, the King of Ba La Ni country orders his people to move ahead. When they got there, theywere very supprised because there was no sign of monkey on the tree, and they saw the bridge made out of rope

across the river with a monkey hanging from it. The hunters indicated to the King that the hanging monkey is theKing Monkey. The King finally understood the whole story and realized what had happened. He then ordered his

people to move back and with his own hand stroke the King Monkey and took good care of it until it becomeconscious.

The King Monkey's acts of sacrificing affect the King in many ways. It changed the way he treated his people, taught him does good deeds, and never does anything that will cause suffering to others.

The King Monkey is Buddha's previous life.

The Story of Buddha's Past Life

    The Pious and Loyal Elephant

Long time ago in Ba La Ni country, there lived a King who usually leads his knights into the forest to hunt. One day the King saw a beautiful white elephant. He then captured it and brought it back to the kingdom,

and directed his knights to watch it carefully, and make sure the elephant eat and stay happy.

From the time the elephant was captured, it did not eat or drink but cried in suffusion. One of the knights

immediately presents the situation to the King. The King himself then went to the elephant's cage and asked

why it did not eat or drink but cry so much.

The elephant knelt down and replied:

    - Your majesty, I still have my old parents who still live in the green forest unable to go out searching forfood to eat. I am the only one that they can depend on. Unfortunately I was captured, at this moment my

parents are probably dying from starvation. I rather die than live unable to fulfill my duty as a son.

After having listened to the elephant, the King was touched and set the elephant free to go back to the forest.

The elephant knelt down to express his gratitude to the King and promised that after his parents died, he will

come back to serve the King. Afterward the elephant ran hurriedly back to the forest where his parents live.

    The Monk and the Goose

One day, a monk on the way to the village seeking food, stops at the house and was invited in. While talking,

the host dropped his ring on the floor. A goose passed by and swallowed it. After a while, the host noticed

the ring was missing, got suspicious and accused the monk of taking it.

At that time, a servant came in to say the goose had just died of unknown causes. The monk then said, "When

the ring slipped off your finger and fell to the floor, I saw the goose swallow it." The host told the servant tocut open the goose's stomach, and indeed, there it was.

The host started apologizing to the monk and asked; "When I was accusing you of stealing, why did you notsay anything? Instead, you let me be suspicious and say bad things to you." The monk replied, "If in order to

protect my reputation to tell the truth then the goose would be butchered immediately. Even if my life was indanger, I could not tell the truth. In doing so, I would be violating one of the most important rules that I have

pledged to keep -- Not to kill, directly or indirectly."

The moral of the story is to teach us not to perform any act that would bring harm to other beings in order to

fulfill personal interest or for any other reason at all.

The Meaning Of Being A Vegetarian

Buddhism is a compassionate religion; therefore, Buddhists should respect the lives of others including

animals. Buddha teaches us not to consume meat; however, before applying this rule, one needs to know the

meaning of it, the benefits of it, and the way to be a vegetarian. By obtaining an understanding of this, onewill not make mistakes when practicing and will not commit any sins.

    I. The Meaning of Being a Vegetarian:

It is a method taught by Buddha. It means to only eat fruit, grains, and vegetables instead of any kind of meat

    (including seafood).

II. The Benefits of Not Eating Meat:

    A. The Practicing Buddhism Aspect: The Buddhist Religion is compassionate, non-partial, and respectful of

the lives of other beings, including animals. Like humans, animals have the right to live, want to live, and areafraid of death. Therefore, Buddha treats all beings equally, none is more favorable then others. Noneshould be used to sacrifice for others. Hence, to improve the compassionate nature in oneself and expands

one's wisdom, a Buddhist should only eat vegetables, fruit, and grains. Furthermore, by not eating meat, one

can avoid the consequences of killing.

    B. The Spiritual Aspect: Eating just vegetables, fruits, and grains makes the brain functions more efficiently.

When eating too much meat, the digestive system has to work harder, the hard-to-digest fat from meat

fatigues the brain. Eating vegetables/fruits/grains benefits one's study habits. It also shows the peace-lovingnature in oneself.

    C. The Physical Aspect: Being a vegetarian helps one to live healthier and longer. One can obtain all therequired nutrients from vegetables/fruits/grains. On the other hand, meat products contain harmful

substances, such as fat and cholesterol.

III. The Methods To Practice Being a Vegetarian:

Depending on the cir*****stances, one can choose to eat only vegetables/grains/fruits by one of the

    following methods:

    A) For the remaining of one's life.B) For any three months out of the year.

    C) For ten days of a month (1, 8, 12, 14, 15, 18, 25, 26, 28, 29 or 30 -- Luna Calendar).D) For four days of a month (1, 4, 15, 29 or 30 -- Luna Calendar).E) For two days of a month (1 and 15 -- Luna Calendar).(*: and on the special memorial days of the Buddhas and the Boddhisatvas)

Whichever method is chosen, one needs to keep the vow, except when being very ill and asked by a physicianto eat meat again. However, after recuperation, that person needs to repend and re-vow.

As we can see, not consuming meat benefits a person spiritually, as well as physically. When practice being

a vegetarian, one needs to choose a method that is most convenient and suitable to one's personal situations.

    How To Arrange Buddha's Altar

Buddha is one who has perfected himself, unaided by any supernatural power, the destroyer of all corruption

and uncleanliness in life; whose wisdom is profound or deeply intellectual; and who is enlightened one. Toshow respect, we worship Buddha and need to display his image with honour.

The worshiping altar should be located in a solemn, visible and clean place, and it must be kept clean.

The Buddha-image is placed at the center of the altar, behind the incense burner, which is a special kind of

bowl, filled with clean sand and placed on a flat vessel or saucer. There are two flower vases and two

candles on both sides. Besides these one may also have a dish of fruits and a cup of water on the altar.

There are also bell (chung) and wooden drum (m) on the altar; with bell on the left and wooden drum on

the right facing the altar. The chanting books and Buddha's teachings are either placed on the altar or on asmall table separately.

There is usually a ceremony of the Buddha in-placed for the first time.

    Practice Doing Good Deed/Charity/GoodWill

Charity is the generous work, Set aside all personal benefits to helping other beings (human and animals).

In daily life, there are many opportunities that you can do to help others, such as guiding the elders acrossthe street, giving foods to the hungers, helping an injured animal, or rescuing ants from water.

Buddha possesses universal love and boundless compassion for all living creatures. As Buddhists, we followBuddha's teachings to reach out to help others with no reservations (intention) and thoughts of getting the

favor in return. Keep in mind that charity works bring merit (good things), not only to the ones we help but

    also to ourselves.

    Buddha with Rahula

Before enlightened, when Rahula (Prince Tt t a's son) was rude and lazy in studying Buddha'steaching, Buddha immediately ordered him to return to the Purity barrack Hin (meaning Gentle andBlessing) for ninety days of nonstop studying and repentance of his wrong doings. When Buddha came visit, Rahula brought him a bowl of water so he could wash his feet. After washing,

    Buddha asked Rahula:

    50

    - Is the water in this bowl drinkable?

    - Buddha, the water is no longer drinkable. The water was clean, but after washing your feet in it, the water

    is now dirty.

    Buddha preached:

    - You are no difference than the water. You are my son. I had left the luxurious life to become a Buddhist

priest. If you are unwilling to make yourself study harder, your conscience and soul will be similar to theuseless dirty water.

Buddha told Rahula to dump the dirty water and asked:

    - That bowl is now not contains dirty water. Can we use to put food into it?

    - Buddha, it cannot be used to put food in because this bowl is known to have been used for storing only dirtywater.

    Buddha preached:

    - You are no difference. Even though you are a Buddhist priest, you are very lazy person and your words are

not peaceful. There are a lot of rumors about you, similar to this bowl that can't be used to store other thingsbeside dirty water.

Buddha used his feet to push down the bowl away causing it to break and asked Rahula:

    - Do you have any sorrow that the bowl is broken?- Buddha, the bowl used to wash the foot was not precious thing to missed at all.

    Buddha told Rahula:

    - You are no difference. Even though you are a Buddhist priest, you will receive no respect because you

carry a bad reputation, just as nobody respects the bowl.

Listening to Buddha's teaching, Rahula felt ashamed. He vowed to repent. From then on, he devoted all histime to studying Buddha's teaching.

    The Lion That Respects Dharma

Long time ago, in a forest, there lived a lion named Kin Th. His hair sparkled like gold, and he was

stronger then thousand animals combined. Each time Kin Th roared, the echo vibrated throughout theforest, causing the flying birds to fall to the ground and the other animals to run and find places to hide. In

the forest, there also lived a Buddhist monk who led a solemn life. He was always peaceful and happy.

At the same time, there was a hunter who saw the beauty in the lion's fur. He wanted to kill the lion, so he

    could skin it to offer to the king for a prize. The hunter thought: "Lion is the king of all other animals;

therefore, it is impossible to use bow and arrows or traps to capture such a strong animal. The only option isto pretend to be a Buddhist monk, wait for the lion to get very close, and then use a poison arrow to kill it."

After careful planning, the hunters immediately shave his head, changed his clothes similar to what the

Buddhist monk wore, and sat under the tree to wait for the lion's arrival.

As usual, the lion came to listen to Buddha's teaching. The hunter sneaked up quietly and shot the poisonarrow into the lion's eye. The lion roared in agony and tried to get up. It was about to jump onto the fake

Buddhist monk to kill him when a thought came to its mind: "That person wearing the Buddhist monk'sclothes symbolize Buddha. It is not difficult to kill the fake monk, but I will damage the color of the cloth that

symbolize Buddha." Thinking that way, the lion swallowed the pain and died without touching the fake monk.

After Kin Th slowly died from the poison arrow, the hunter immediately skinned it beautiful fur andbrought it to the king for a prize. After listening to the hunter's story, the king recognized the hunter's cruelty

and was stuck with admiration of how much the lion respected the Three Jewels. The king then ordered thehunter beheaded, and the lion's body cremated in similar ceremony like that of a Buddhist monk. The golden lion, Kin Th was one of Buddha's previous life.

    The Very Pious Monk

Once upon a time, there was a monk named Quang Thim. He was born and raised in a poor family. Hisparent were blind. Day and night, the monk helped out his parents. He recognized that people lived in a lifefilled with greediness for fame. Therefore, he took his parents into the woods, built a small wooden shed to

stay, and studied Buddha's teachings. Quang Thim never killed an animal. Instead, he went into the woodseveryday to picked fruit to feed his family.

Close to his shed, there was a creek with clear, cool water, and lot of tree and good fruits.
