PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

WHAT IS PERSONALITY ?

It is the totality of a person‟s quality, both desirable and undesirable as revealed in response to the

various situations presented to you in life. Your personality is the total impact you make on other

people.

The personality each one of has is determined by many factors. The level of one‟s intelligent. One‟s

physical limitations, extent of one‟s education , heredity and environmental , in which one s brought

up. The strength of our basic emotions, anxiety.

According to Bradshaw-“ An individual's personality is an aggregate conglomeration of decisions

we've made throughout our lives...”

A personality is an improvement in all spheres of an individual's life, be it with friends, in the office

or in any other environment.

Personality development is the developing a personality cult so as to create a strong positive

impression about self with the targeted group, or in general; and more pertinent aspect of such

personality is to maintain and prove in a long run.

Ten Important Points for an Ultimate Personality:

• Appearance.

• Intelligence.

• Smartness.

• Trustworthy, High integrity and Responsible.

• Knowledge, in depth.

• Management.

• Efficiency.

• Economic independence.

• Morality / Character.

withstanding capacity.

Social personality‟s main factors are: social values, communication skill, attitude and economic

independence especially in relation with wealth.

Psychological personality is in tune with personal values, approach, thinking pattern, emotional

management and influenced by knowledge, intelligence and smartness.

Philosophical personality is on account of maturity of values.

SELF DEVELOPMENT

Self Development is an approach that emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning. It recognizes

that we all have a great potential for learning and for changing what we do.

Self development focuses on the above mentioned cyclical process of learning, which encourages us

to build the ability to take responsibility and be proactive – initiating action , rather than being

reactive- in the way we work. Being proactive assist us in gaining more awareness of our power to

respond to any situation by recognizing our own role in influencing its outcome. Self development

recognizes us to recognize , and to own , our responsibility in influencing outcomes by taking risks

and doing things differently.

SWOT ANALYSIS

A SWOT is a planning tool used to understand the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and

Threats. It involves specifying the objective of the business or project or individual and identifying

the internal and external factors that are supportive or unfavourable to achieving that objective.

SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats.

Page 3: Personality Development

English Assignment

A SWOT analysis generates information that is helpful in matching an organization or group‟s goals,

programs, and a capacity to the social environment in which it operates.

Strengths

Positive tangible and intangible attributes, internal to an organization.

They are within the organization‟s control.

Weakness

Factors that are within an organization‟s control that detract from its ability to attain the

desired goal.

Which areas might the organization improve?

Opportunities

External attractive factors that represent the reason for an organization to exist and develop.

What opportunities exist in the environment, which will propel the organization?

Identify them by their “time frames”

Threats

External factors, beyond an organization‟s control, which could place the organization

mission or operation at risk.

The organization may benefit by having contingency plans to address them if they should

occur.

Classify them by their “seriousness” and “probability of occurrence”.

Changes in the global environment are radical and far reaching and the capacity to learn faster is

the only source for sustaining competitive advantage.

The dictum, “Know thyself, own change thyself” has become the cornerstone of managerial

effectiveness. Learning implies awareness of the job, one‟s current position, personal strengths and

limitations , and development needs. Knowing oneself is not enough. Learning about self must be

translated into action for change. Consequently ,change in self leads to managing the external reality.

Managers need to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills in technical, environmental and

leadership areas. They need to examine their values , style and typical behaviours and assess the

extent to which these are facilitating them both in their professional lives and personal lives.

What is Knowledge Management ?

Page 4: Personality Development

English Assignment

A systematic and integrated coordination of organisation-wide activities of acquiring, creating, storing,

sharing, disseminating, developing and deploying knowledge by individuals and groups in pursuit of

organisational goals.

Knowledge, by definition, resides within people. To derive competitive advantage, the organization

should be able to harness this individual knowledge through its systems and procedures thereby

institutionalizing it into Organizational Knowledge, and use this Organizational Knowledge into

adding value in its business proposition.

Knowledge Management is a way of looking at every aspect of an organisation‟s operations to

improve the way it harnesses the knowledge that is crucial to its continued success.

What is done in Knowledge management?

Creating and populating a repository of in –house knowledge

Valuation of knowledge

Facilating the transfer of knowledge

Creating a knowledge sharing environment

Building an organizational culture focused on innovation and knowledge creation.

TOOLS OF SUCCESS

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life, as by the

obstacleswhich one has overcome while trying to succeed”

The Following are the seven mantras for success:

1. Communication Skills – Most of what goes on as business in an organisation is, in fact,

communication. Anything that is not communication is probably dependent on something to

initiate communication or keep it going. This is why one needs to master the art of

communication both verbal as well as written.

2. Influencing Abilities: This is more of a leadership trait. It includes persuading and negotiating

skills. Persuasion means convincing and encouraging people to do, as against being pushy and

aggressive. It is a very powerful tool, especially in conflicting situations both in your

professional as well as personal life.

3. Managing Skills: - In layman‟s words this term means getting things done. But from the

career perspective it means managing things, people and of course, managing yourself, that is,

your time, resources and money. To be able to achieve success one needs to prepare and train

Page 5: Personality Development

himself/ herself in the art of effective management.

4. Problem Solving – It means knowing how to recognize and define problems, implement

solutions and track and evaluate results. Effective problems solving skills will help to become

the backbone of any team, which in turn will help in career prospects.

5. Creative Thinking – It is said that intelligence is central to both the right and left modes of the

brain. But the majority of people give more importance only to the logical approach in

problem solving. What is really required is a blend of logical and lateral thinking processes

together to generate new ideas and solutions, seeing things in the `round‟ and having an open

mind.

6. Social Skills – It means one‟s ability to relate to people, having insights, helping others and

facilitating. Interdependence today is of greater value than independence. Thus it becomes

that much more important for you to take a genuine interest in people with whom you work

and spent time, emotion and money on them.

7. Managing Money - If in spite of possessing all the above mentioned skills you fail to achieve

success it may be because you are poor in the number game! You must have your figures,

statistics and accounts in place. You must be shrewd in the money matters. As an old saying

goes. “Money begets Money”.

Some Tips for Personality Development

Personality is the collection of characteristic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are associated with

a person. Personality Development is an improvement in all spheres of an individual's life, be it with

friends, in the office or in any other environment. The progress in and insistence on quality of

education coupled with rapid strides in spread of knowledge calls for equally developed and able

recipients. Thus, a definite need is felt for well-developed personality and character in our life. The

vedantic concept of personality development is based on the concept of perfection of each soul and

self-confidence for realization and manifestation of this inner knowledge. Five dimensions are

involved in forming the human personality. These are:

Physical self

Energy self

Intellectual self

Mental self

Blissful self

Well-integrated personality is the sum total of harmonious expression of these five dimensions.

Certain Factors About Personality Development

There are various factors you will need to consider for personality development so that it has a

positive effect on your life. Personality development is all about your individualism and how you

control your emotions to act in a way that is most beneficial for you. When we think and analyze how

Page 7: Personality Development

people around us have behaved or reacted, we are in a way trying to assess how their personalities are,

without really knowing what we are doing. A personality is built up by the kinds of thoughts and

feelings we have within us that can result in a particular behavior.

Have a positive attitude

Motivate Yourself

Believe in your strong points

Effective Body Language

Handle people the right way

Focusing on personality development can help overcome many hurdles in your life. Problems that

may seem to loom large otherwise can suddenly seem to be really miniscule for you. Always fill your

mind with positive and fresh thoughts. Remember, how you present yourself has a lot to do with the

way things can turn out for you. So, turn things in your favor with successful ways of personality

development..

Some Tips to Improve Personality & Life Stlye

Here are some "Popular Sayings" which will very be helpful for everyone in critical situations.

Don't compare yourself with any one in this world. If you compare, you are insulting yourself.

Life laughs at you when you are unhappy... Life smiles at you when you are happy... Life salutes

you when you make others happy...

Every successful person has a painful story. Every painful story has a successful ending. Accept

the pain and get ready for success.

Easy is to judge the mistakes of others. Difficult is to recognize our own mistakes. It is easier to

protect your feet with slippers than to cover the earth with carpet.

No one can go back and change a bad beginning; But anyone can start now and create a

successful ending.

If a problem can be solved, no need to worry about it. If a problem cannot be solved what is the

use of worrying?

If you miss an opportunity don't fill the eyes with tears. It will hide another better opportunity in

front of you.

"Changing the Face" can change nothing. But "Facing the Change" can change everything.

Don't complain about others; Change yourself if you want peace.

Mistakes are painful when they happen. But year's later collection of mistakes is called

experience, which leads to success.

Be bold when you loose and be calm when you win.

Heated gold becomes ornament. Beaten copper becomes wires. Depleted stone becomes statue.

So the more pain you get in life you become more valuable.

Personality Traits

Personality Traits are intrinsic differences that remain stable throughout most of our life. They are the

constant aspects of our individuality.

The Big Five Personality Traits

The "Big Five Personality Traits" are five broad factors or dimensions of personality developed

through lexical analysis. The Traits are also referred to as the "Five Factor Model". The model is

considered to be the most comprehensive empirical or data-driven enquiry into personality. The first

public mention of the model was in 1933, by L. L. Thurstone in his presidential address to the

American Psychological Association. The five factors are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,

Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The Five Factor Model is a purely descriptive model of personality,

but psychologists have developed a number of theories to account for the Big Five.

The Big Five factors Explanation

Openness - appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety

of experience.

Conscientiousness - a tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement;

planned rather than spontaneous behavior.

Extraversion - energy, positive emotions, surgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation and the

company of others.

Agreeableness - a tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and

antagonistic towards others.

Page 9: Personality Development

English Assignment

Neuroticism - a tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression,

or vulnerability; sometimes called emotional instability.

Personality is the result of man's experience; it is the

sum total of all that he has said, done, felt, thought,

hoped for and believed in; it is the result of his

reactions to the events of life as they come and go.

Don't give up your heart if you face anything hard in

your life. It all depends on our views. Developing

Personality is not a one day activity. It takes time depends on our interest & dedication to improve it.

Find out the factor which you are weak in & try to work on that & Lead a Happy Life!!!!!!!

Personality Development: Be Who You Want to Be

Personality is an interesting subject, and not a topic I wanted to cover until I had thoroughly done my

research. After-all, even just the word „personality‟ means a lot of different things to a lot of different

people. Our personality actually plays a huge part in how we perceive the world and how the world

perceives us so I think it is an important subject to cover.

This site is all about living the life you want to live and being who you want to be and I think it‟s safe

to say that we each view someone‟s personality as a large part of what makes them who they are.

With that in mind, let‟s look at how you can change yours for your own benefit.

What is Our Personality?

I searched around for some definitions of this term and I have to say that my favourite is rather basic:

“A set of qualities that make a person distinct from another”. Nice, simple, to the point and the exact

definition that I‟ve come to think the word means through my 19 years of existence.

On top of that statement, I, like many others, believe that our personality includes our beliefs and

values so this is the understanding of the word I‟m going to use here. Feel free to substitute your own

definition and still go through the process towards the middle of this post.

How It Is Formed

Your current personality, whatever it may be, has been formed in a number of ways. Psychologists

have studied human personalities for years and have come to a number of conclusions. First of all, it

is believed that certain traits in our character are hereditary, yet things like our values and beliefs are

derived from socialization and unique experiences, mostly from childhood.

Based on that statement, it‟s likely that the personality of you and anyone you know is based on:

Social experiences (especially from childhood)

Unique experiences that you have had in your lifetime

The environment in which you grew up and how you had to act

While most of this might seem obvious, there is some strong research which suggests that a lot of our

current personality is in-fact, genetic. As an example, researchers from the University of Minnesota

Page 11: Personality Development

English Assignment

studied 8,000 twins who had been separated shortly after birth and reunited later in life for whatever

reason. They found that even though one of the twins may have lived a completely different live in a

different environment, their behaviours were still almost identical.

I don‟t think I like the idea that our personality and specifically our behaviours are largely proven to

be based around our genetic make-up. That being said, I still believe it is entirely possible to change

your personality and literally be whoever you want to be.

Designing your Own Personality

Before continuing with the following steps on designing your own personality, spend a few minutes

thinking of the personalities of people in your life. I have some close friends that I know whenever I

see them they will cheer me up because they are happy and very positive. On the other hand, I also

have friends that are close, but I can always predict how they will react in certain situations and it is

usually in a negative manner.

I think all of you can relate to my situation of having friends who you love to be around and other

friends who you do care about, but make you feel „drained‟ when you spend time with them.

The whole point of this post and personality development in general is to develop the characteristics

you want to have rather than the ones you‟ve been conditioned with.

Following are four steps that I have personally used in the past month to help bring about a change in

my own personality that have allowed me to literally be the type of person I want to be. If you are just

a skim reader, do not take any advice in this post. The sections in bold need their descriptions to be

read in order to have this process result in the kind of personality that you want.

1. Be Honest With Your Current Traits

How would you describe yourself right now? Personally I think I have quite a split personality. At

times I can be quiet, I keep myself to myself and I‟m very considerate towards the feelingsof others.

At other times, I can be quite crazy, highly outgoing and literally oblivious to what people think and I

don‟t really care.

It‟s important that you are honest with your current traits so you can decide what you want to change.

The position I would like to take my life requires me to be considerate to others so I wouldn‟t change

that, but I also want to have other characteristics which don‟t necessarily compliment being

considerate.

If you‟ve just spent the last few days in a negative spiral, cursing everything and thinking the world

Page 12: Personality Development

English Assignment

owes you a favour, then don‟t define yourself as someone who is happy and positive all the time. You

may be happy and positive some of the time, but you should be aware of the traits you aren‟t so proud

of as well as the ones that you are. Honest self-assessment is key to this step of the process.

2. Define the Qualities You Want to Have

Because this is all about you being who you want to be, it‟s time to pick the qualities that you want to

have. I have to stress that is important that you do not go overboard on this part of the process and

pick tons of qualities that you desire. It is far easier to focus on around 5 core qualities you would like

to have at a time rather than a list of 20 or more.

Some of the qualities that I picked for myself were:

Independent

Honest

Positive

Fun / Good sense of humour

Trustworthy

It is important you pick qualities that you want to have, rather than qualities you think people want

you to have. I put honest and trustworthy on my list because they matter to me personally, but I also

put positive because life is a toss-up between that and negative. Most people will say they want to be

positive yet they unconsciously love drama in their lives, so really think about this before making

your list.

3. Visualise Yourself for 21 Days with These Qualities

The 21-day format has been without a doubt the most amazing thing I have came across in my life. I

like to think that I semi-invented this idea because even though it is featured in the book „Psycho

Cybernetics„ by Maxwell Maltz, I can‟t find any evidence online of someone who had put a plan in

place for this and implemented it (so I did).

This third part of the process will involve you visualising yourself in any situation having the qualities

that you want to have. There are a few things to remember during visualisations and the 21-day

challenge:

You must do this for 21 days without missing a day

You need to visualise yourself being how you want to be in terms of the end result, not the

process

Page 13: Personality Development

English Assignment

Your visualisations need to be as real as possible – notice smells, colours, small details and

sounds from your imagined environment

To give an example, If I want the quality of positivity to become natural, then each day I must spend a

couple of minutes visualising myself being positive. For example I might visualise myself, as vividly

as possible, being positive after an event that most people would struggle to remain happy about. I am

aware of the fact that this idea will sound very silly if you have never tried it before.

However, it is scientifically proven that our nervous system can not tell the difference between a real

event and one that is vividly imagined. The 21 days that you will do this process for is enough time

for new connections and pathways to form in your brain, thus „imprinting‟ your desired result – sort

of like a habitual auto-response.

4. Act as If They Are Present

This is quite self explanatory, but in everyday life see if you can act as if your desired qualities are

already present. If you want to be positive then be positive, if you wish to be honest then start

implementing that in your life. This will get much, much easier as you get closer to the end of the 21

day challenge and this starts to become habitual.

For those of you who do take this challenge I would love for you to come back in around three weeks

and let me know how you get on. To everyone else, I would love your thoughts of the idea in general

and what your thoughts are on changing our personalities.
