Born in the “Bronx”

Drug habit

Lisa and I grew up in a home where people were heavily addicted to drugs… they weren’t careful and were using needles freely.

…contracted HIV

Family fell apart

“took to the streets” with a group of kids who were… “lost” (kids without homes) “pretty soon”, there was nowhere to go back to…

The first night I slept on the subway (didn’t think much about it)

I had just turned 16 when my mother passed away

“It” really began that day, a kind of change.

I saw life there one minute, and completely crushed and gone the next.

I realized that my time is limited, if I keep going like this, I’m going to end up wasting my life too.

I thought: “I need to go to school”, because I have all this potential inside of me… how is it ever going to become anything?

Since I was going to be 17 by the time I began high school, I just said: “I’ll do high school in 2 years” (High school in America is typically 4 years)

Found a scholarship from the New York Times and applied to that. 奖学金 纽约时报

Interview for the NYT scholarship was on the same day as my Harvard interview.

The next week, I found out that I had gotten the scholarship. Soon after, I got “the letter”.

If I could talk to myself back when I had given up…

“Don't look at the people around you who are doing things and think that they are "made of something more than you”.
