The Beginning of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC)

The federal government granted the SMSC official recognition as an Indian tribe on Nov. 28, 1969. The first SMSC Chairman, Norman M. Crooks, was elected.

Little Six Bingo was established in 1982. Little Six Casino opens in 1988. The Community experienced significant growth throughout the 1990s as it built additional 

housing, a convenience store, a fitness center, a child care center, and RV and camping enterprises. 

Mystic Lake Casino opened in May 1992. The SMSC signed a historic agreement with the city of Prior Lake for police and fire services in 

1993. The first hotel tower is built in 1996.  In 2008 SMSC Water Bottling, a vision clinic, and the Dakota! Ice Center opened. Little Six Casino reopened in December 2007, moving back to its original site.

SMSC Gaming Enterprise Records Center We started with 240 square feet and a few hundred boxes in 1993. These

were mostly employment records. We grew to 1,600 square feet and 2,000 boxes in 2000 as we were moving

the financial and audit records from the office areas to the records center. In 2004 we increased our space to 3,200 square feet and storing 5,000

boxes. We purchased Simple Records Manager (WebSimple) http://recordmanagementsoftware.com/wp/

In 2007 we started using Ticket-in-ticket-out (TITO). We went from 7,500 boxes to 17,000 and added another 1,600 square feet. With the increase in TITO ticket volume we were archiving 20,000 plus

boxes and running out of room.. We worked with our Internal Audit team and the SMSC Gaming

Commission and reduced the retention schedule from 5 years to 60 days.

In 2012 we moved into our current 6200 square foot facility. Our box count is now 14,778 and we have had enough room to store 354 boxes

of SMSC government records. As of December 31 2016 we have destroyed 292,891,456 TITO tickets. In 2012 we upgraded our paper shredder enabling us to recycle 360,000 pounds

of paper last year. We also purchased a hard drive shredder and have destroyed 7500 hard drives

in 4 years.

Document Imaging (DI)

We started looking at DI in 2005: We realized that our largest invoiced commodity was food and

beverage. We process 80 to 100 invoices per day.

The retention was 6 years giving us 1,000 boxes in the retention center.

In 2006 we purchased Documentum; Captiva and Application Extender.

We went live in July 2007 reduced the retention to 3 year and now Store 160 boxes.

GP followed in 2015 enabling us to scan general product invoices.

In all, this will free up 1,800 box spaces at the records center.

Worked at OPG-3, Inc. for 9 years as a Laserfiche technician and developer. Specializes in Workflow creation, Forms creation, custom integration, and

conversions. Assists with everything from phone support to custom application

development. Over the years, has written 20+ custom applications and integrations used in

many different Laserfiche implementations using Laserfiche SDK as well as 3rd

party API’s. Converted around 15 document management systems to Laserfiche systems

including application extender, Docuware, Sharepoint, and even IBM AS/400’s.
