    Deepavali ~Festival Date - 13 OCT 2012

Deepavali is also known as Diwali, or the Festival of Lights. Light is signifiant in

There are )arious alleged origins attributed to this festi)al. !ome hold that they celebrate

the marriage of Lakshmiwith ord /ishnu. 'n 0engal, the festi)al is dedicated to the worshi&

of Kali. 't also commemorates that blessed day on which the trium&hant ord Rama

returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ra)ana. n this day also !ri Krishna %illed the demon

    1ara%asura.

'n Malaysia, it is celebrated as the day the e)il 1ara%asura was slain by ord Krishna. The

trium&h of light o)er dar%ness and good o)er e)il. The mood starts a month beforehand

with the &re&aration of the )arious array of 'ndian coo%ies such as murukku, ommapadi, chippi, atharasum, nei orundeiand the wall brea%er kallu orundei. f course, there is the

ine)itable sho&&ing and wor% to be done that re(uires e)erything to be new and clean, from

curtains to clothes for family members. 1ormally on 2ee&a)ali e)e, Padayaior offerings and

&rayers are made to ancestors and deceased family members. After this ceremony, the

women are busy in the %itchen while the rest of the family do the house by hanging new

3etting u& early before sunrise, oil is a&&lied on heads and a bath

is ta%en. This ritual oil bath is %nown as 4ganga-snanam4 and is

done to cleanse one of the im&urities of the &ast year. Prayers areheld at the family altar, after which the family gathers before the

elders to recei)e their blessings. Then the guests come by and food

coo%ed is &re&ared 4halal4 or %osher so as to be ser)ed to Malay
