MDC holds new Workshops
We are very grateful that a variety of organisations have chosen to hold
Workshops and Conferences at the MDC. Our guests are very well looked after
and we have presentation facilities and we are also able to organise catering
requirements.
The seating can be organised to face the projector screen.
The attendees can be organised into a sharing circle.
Please contact us if you’re interested in booking our facilities.
Recreational Fishing Grant
We were successful with a Recreational Fishing Grant application to develop a new
interactive model highlighting fishing in Marine Parks. We have put up a photo and
a brief description. (as per photo on page 1)
Please see: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/goodliving/posts/2015/08/fishing-grants
We were thrilled to be listed as the first Grant recipient ie:
“Recreational fishers rejoice, your favourite pastime is about to get a boost.
In July it was announced that 37 projects will receive funding in round one of the Recreational Fishing Grants Programme.
What does this mean for you? Here’s some examples –
In metropolitan Adelaide a grant of $20,000 will create an interactive model, Amazing Fishing Adventures with Marine Parks, at the Marine Discovery Centre in Henley Beach.”
Planning begins with Greg, Brian, Ursula, Tim, Bernadette and Callum
Science Week is launched
Congratulations to the Science Week Committee for SA, particularly our Co-
ordinator Rona Sakko. The launch was held on the evening of Thursday 6th August
at the Goyder Pavillion, Wayville Showgrounds. Professor Rob Morrison hosted the
event, and epilepsy researcher and Prime Minister’s Prize for Science
winner Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO spoke on the topic of ‘Science: Changing
Lives’.
One of last year’s Award winners, Michael Mills, meets a new friend
Professor Rob Morrison with Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO, who gave an excellent speech about epilepsy
Marine Trainees Program
We are thrilled to have Karno Kuri Martin join our MDC Team. Karno will be
developing his skills under the mentoring of Karl Winda Telfer, Kaurna Senior
Custodian. Karno will be working 20 hours per week and will be involved in
the Introductions for our Excursions, our Marine Trails and being the
Volunteer Guide in our Kaurna Learning Station. Karno is already working on
updating the area and we are really looking forward to seeing the
improvements.

New Puppets
Recently, we had an opportunity to develop some new puppets for our Centre –
some of our puppets are over 10 years old. Fortunately, we have an outstanding
group of Volunteers who ensure that our visitors interact with our models and
puppets in an appropriate way. Considering the number of visitors that the MDC
has, we have minimal damage.
We sincerely thank Kristen Messenger from Bugs’n’Slugs who provided 3
Workshops at a very generous cost.
The workshop will include fixing old puppets, deconstructing some of the sharks
and dolphin toys into puppets. Creating finger puppets like seastars, shells,
anemones or nudibranchs.

Ann welcomes John home We were lucky enough to have special guest, John Agnew, visit us recently. We are
very pleased to inform you that John keeps receiving good reports with his health.
MDC Volunteer Ann welcomes John back to the MDC
John has just returned from an overseas trip with his wife, Maxine. It looks like the
sea air at Normanville and retirement is agreeing with John! He enjoyed a recent
lunch with friends at Estia, as per below, one of our great supporters. Our Honorary
Senior Consultant, John, was also very impressed with our new aquariums and new
displays.

Cultural presentations are a real hit!
The students from Our Lady of Grace, Glengowrie and Stradbroke Primary School,
Rostrevor, were lucky enough to be the first primary schools in South Australia to
experience the Wonggayerlo Cultural Presentation.
Karl Telfer and Michael Mills were brilliant performers and we received the
following comments from two of their experienced educators:
“This was the most moving experience for my students and I would recommend
this to any Primary School” Kristen Messenger, Stradbroke Primary School
“An outstanding performance that gave my students an amazing insight into
Aboriginal culture.” Kristy Ogden, Our Lady of Grace, Glengowrie
We are hoping to provide this amazing experience to many other primary schools in
South Australia. Please let Primary
Schools and Teachers know that they can
book this experience through the MDC.
Please see the following flyer, which
provides more information.

Bird Life Australia Workshop held at the MDC
We had 17 attendees for a workshop provided by Dr Meg Cullen and Dr Grainne
Maguire both from Victoria, and local Jean Turner. All attendees thoroughly
enjoyed the workshop and found out many intriguing facts about our local
threatened coastal bird species including the Hooded Plover.

Seasonality Website launched
The Executive Officer for the
Marine Fishers Association,
Nathan Bicknell, launched the
new Seasonality website on the
evening of Thursday 27th
August.
Nathan launches new website
The website www.seasonailtysa.com.au provides a guide to various local marine
species and when they’re more likely to be
caught. “When you enjoy a variety of
seasonal seafood, you are not only
guaranteed freshness, you are also
supporting your local producers”. Nathan thanked the sponsors involved
including the Adelaide and Mt Lofty
Ranges NRM representative, Tony
Flaherty.
We are discussing some possibilities with
Nathan that will promote the Seasonality
concept. Please stay tuned!

Tennyson Dunes Group
We are thrilled that our friends at the Tennyson Dunes Group (TDG) won the State’s
Coastcare Award. We’d like to congratulate the whole Group including Nick Crouch
and Val Wales who’ve made an enormous contribution to caring for our local dunes.
The event was held at Waikerie and we were pleased to receive a “Highly
Commended” Award. The TDG also recently held their 20th year Annual Open Day,
which included the Dedication of the dunes by Minister for the Environment Ian
Hunter MLC and it was an overwhelming success.

Food from the Sea
There are two main groups of fish harvested for seafood (information from “The story of
Seafood” book):
Seafood in the vertebrate group are commonly known as finfish and seafood in the invertebrates
group are known as shellfish.
People have been harvesting fish as food source for thousands of years. These days people fish
for food, for fun and to earn a living.
