 Arakanese Communities-Malaysia The Statement on The 72 nd Anniversary Memorial Ceremony of Ven.Ottama Date:9th September 2011 Today is the 72 nd Anniversary of Ven.Ottama who was well-known as the Sun of Asia in the world history and the Light of Independence in Burmese History for guiding the first political alertness. Ven.Ottama is an Arakanese Buddhist monk. He was born in Arakan State,the western part of Burma. Touring the countries such as India, Japan, Egypt, Cambodia, Sirlanka(Ceylon ), France, England,China, Korea and so on , he with his opened eyes studied the then political situations. He told the then British Governor General Graddock to get out from Burma with his brave speech “Graddock, Go Home” by the Thuriya Newspaper(The Sun Newspaper). With this only one word, he guided the whole Burmese with fear under the Bri tish colonial rule to face the unfai r governance. Thanks to his polit ical guidance, there arose Buddhist Monks Union, University Student Boycotts and political alertness among Burmese. He was the first Buddhist Martyr, the first Union Architect who was imprisoned for many times and sacrificed his life for Burmese Independence overcoming physical and mental sufferings. He is well-known as a martyr not only in world history but in Burmese history as well. The whole Burmese honour him on the occasion of September 9 of every year in memory of his thanks, sacrifice and first political guidance. The successive Burmese Military regimes have tried on purpose to make his honorable sacrifice disappear in Burmese History gradually. We sorrowfully see the Ottama Park opened in honor of him by the Parliament Government at the southern archway abolished by the successive Burmese military regimes. On this occasion of the 72 nd Anniversary Ceremony, we issue our statement and strongly demand the ruling Burmese Military Junta the followings- 1.We strongly condemn the cunning way of abolishing Ven.Ottama’s political role in Burmese History and demand to present his political activities in Burmese Curriculum 2.To renounce chauvinism , recognize and respect self-determination of all ethnics of Burma 3.To renounce chauvinism , recognize and respect self-determination of all ethnics of Burma 4.To have political table with all ethnic leaders based with view to enjoying sustainable political stability and to establish a democratic federal union based on freedom,justi ce and equality among all ethnics.
