Arakanese Communities-MalaysiaThe Statement on The 72nd Anniversary Memorial Ceremony of Ven.Ottama
Date:9th September 2011
Today is the 72ndAnniversary of Ven.Ottama who was well-known as the Sun of Asia in the world history
and the Light of Independence in Burmese History for guiding the first political alertness.
Ven.Ottama is an Arakanese Buddhist monk. He was born in Arakan State, the western part of
Burma. Touring the countries such as India, Japan, Egypt, Cambodia, Sirlanka(Ceylon), France,England,China,Korea and so on , he with his opened eyes studied the then political situations. He told the
then British Governor General Graddock to get out from Burma with his brave speech “Graddock, Go
Home” by the Thuriya Newspaper(The Sun Newspaper). With this only one word, he guided the wholeBurmese with fear under the British colonial rule to face the unfair governance. Thanks to his political
guidance, there arose Buddhist Monks Union, University Student Boycotts and political alertness among
Burmese. He was the first Buddhist Martyr, the first Union Architect who was imprisoned for many times
and sacrificed his life for Burmese Independence overcoming physical and mental sufferings.
He is well-known as a martyr not only in world history but in Burmese history as well. The whole
Burmese honour him on the occasion of September 9 of every year in memory of his thanks, sacrifice andfirst political guidance. The successive Burmese Military regimes have tried on purpose to make his
honorable sacrifice disappear in Burmese History gradually. We sorrowfully see the Ottama Park openedin honor of him by the Parliament Government at the southern archway abolished by the successive
Burmese military regimes.
On this occasion of the 72nd Anniversary Ceremony, we issue our statement and strongly demand
the ruling Burmese Military Junta the followings-
1.We strongly condemn the cunning way of abolishing Ven.Ottama’s political role in Burmese
History and demand to present his political activities in Burmese Curriculum
2.To renounce chauvinism , recognize and respect self-determination of all ethnics of Burma
3.To renounce chauvinism , recognize and respect self-determination of all ethnics of Burma
4.To have political table with all ethnic leaders based with view to enjoying sustainable political
stability and to establish a democratic federal union based on freedom, justice and equality among
all ethnics.
