Task 2a Read the short texts about Australian people and label the place on the map.

I’m Carrie. I live in the capital of New South Wales, and the largest city in the

country. It’s got everything – fantastic beaches – who hasn’t heard of Bondi beach?

- , the trendiest shops, non-stop nightlife, and only two hours away, you’ve got the

Blue Mountains – breath-taking scenery and fresh air. And the climate here is

fantastic!

I’m Pete and I’m from Melbourne, the capital of Victoria. OK, the weather is a

bit miserable here, but we still have the best culture and sport! Every year, we have

Australia’s top horse racing event here, as well as the Australian Tennis Open and

the Grand Prix. and this city is where Australian Rules Football came from! It’s

not surprising I’m a sports fanatic!

My name’s Sean, and I’m from Perth which lies on the Swann River.

It’s a peaceful, clean place to live with hot weather and brilliant blue

skies. Western Australia has 12 000 km of the best surfing spots in

the world. That’s what I live for – the sea and the surf!

I’m Abbie. I live in the centre of Australia, in the outback. Everyone

comes here to Alice Springs to see the massive red rock, Uluru. I

like the fact that here we are closer to the real Aborigine culture.

I’ve learnt a lot about it. My dad works for the School of the Air,

teaching kids all over the state who live far from a school. So it

really is the heart of the country.

I’m Jordan and I live in Cairns, the perfect place for exploring Australia’s

biggest attraction – the Great Barrier Reef. It stretches over 2 300

kilometres along the Queensland coast. There are more than 1 000

islands, where you can dive, snorkel, sail and swim. Just 25 km north of

Cairns is the rainforest – a tropical paradise!

Task 6 Read the text. Use the sentences below to complete the text. Write the letter of the

missing sentence in the box in the correct gap.

Ant Invaders

Ants can ruin picnics and drive cooks out of kitchens. The tiny invaders may also wreck the rules by which

entire communities of their peers work, new research suggests. (e.g.)

Argentine ants are native to South America, but they now live in warm places on six continents. (1) ____

In 1993, Nathan Sanders of Humbolt State University in Arcata,

California, saw that the ants were moving north through California. (2) ____

Sanders and his co-workers went to nearby Jasper Ridge Biological

Preserve before the South American ants arrived. (3) ____

But after the Argentine ants showed up, everything changed. Suddenly, native ants in the preserve were

more scattered* and much more likely to live in contact with other native species. (4) ____

Sanders thinks that the invaders changed all the rules that native ants normally live by to make them behave in

new ways. (5) ____

At least, we’re still safe, however. Ants can destroy our picnics, but, for now, they’ve left our communities

intact!

A This being said, many ants don’t travel long distances.

B Seven years of data suggest the changeover happened fast.

C Also, they have spread to 21 states in the U.S.A.

D However, ants are very intelligent creatures.

E Other ecologists are not yet convinced.

F The researchers found some 20 species of ants living there. Different species rarely interacted with

each other.

G Curious to see if the little critters** were affecting other ants as they moved, he decided to do a little

experiment.

H This research was done by the Animal Society Group based in Scotland.
