So I started first thinking about the incredible transformation we are experience in the market with Cloud. And again, cloud really is changing everything. Changing how business run and people work; its creating new categories, disrupting existing categories, its changing how we communicate and share. changing the economics of business forever. It’s happening at a speed no one ever imagined It really is an amazing transformation that’s happening now, and it presents an incredible opportunity in front of us. And as I started thinking about the role of Oracle in this incredible transformation, I stated thinking about Oracle’s role in other transformations…other technology transitions.
Traditional business models have started to shift to digital ones. Companies like: NETFLIX changed entire cable / TV industry. Proteus Digital Health offers FDA approved ingestible and wearable sensors which delivers precise information about medication ingestion, dose timing and associated physiologic response of patients, including heart rate, activity, rest, and skin temperature UBER-global, modern day transportation service - Uber is evolving the way the world moves. By seamlessly connecting riders to drivers through our apps,we make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers. From our founding in 2009 to our launches in over 200 cities today, Uber's rapidly expanding global presence continues to bring people and their cities closer.
From brick and mortar, to mobile and cloud Oracle offers a full technology continuum to enable customers where they might be on that journey. Our customers are going to be on one side or the other, both sides at the same time, they’re going to be in the middle, they’re going to be somewhere on that journey, and we need to have a set of solutions that enable them wherever they might be.
So, let’s now see the POWER of the ORACLE CLOUD PLATFORM that enables this valuable scenario. There are 4 components of the platform: Build: Which is with respect to creating the UIs, the APIs, and the back-ends – everything it takes to create the app and the experience. Integrate: Which is with respect to the complex integration of the back end apps – cloud and on prem. Analyze: Which is with respect to the analysis of the mountains of data generated by these systems. Engage: Which uses the insights gotten from the analysis to drive business impact by engaging with customers, employees, and partners Our Cloud Platform gives you – a modern platform to effect change – changing how businesses run and people work, changing how we communicate and share.
Modern application experiences require the experience to be consistent on the phone, tablet, website or perhaps in the store. And the context of the customer must be maintained across the customers experience. Anna was engaged with StyleRetail using her phone, but she completed her experience in the store. While the store associate interacted with her on her ipad. Multiple form factors, different ways of engaging with the client. The empty shopping cart, carried across each of these channels. Consumption of internal and external services is a key part of the experience, its not just about the customer experience, or purchase history, which came from the internal systems, but also the customer reviews, credit ratings, which might come from external sources. And finally, analysis of the users’ behavior, search history, products viewed, time spent in parts of the app, geographies travelled, all improve the personalization of the experience. Analysis of the customer behavior must be built into the platform. And FINALLY, all of this can be done by a “citizen developer” not necessarily a programmer, may be a business user that can develop an application with some technical background, eg. Being able to develop an excel Macro
Let’s take an example, the store clerk app, might want to add custom data to track issues and be able to search on them. That would require the ability to extend the Oracle Marketing Cloud AND extend custom objects, perhaps mash it up with other apps. With ABCS, all you need is a browser, build your own apps – NO CODING required. Visual page editor, extend objects from apps OR create custom objects or add search on a custom box This is NOT just a single page simple apps, it’s far more sophisticated apps, you can provide on multiple form factors, tables, phone, browser and publish right there. Consume SaaS and 3rd Party APIs from a consistent API Catalog.
Let’s talk about creating the back-end now. To develop such a rich experience, you need: The first aspect is to create and manage the API catalog – a catalog of APIs that mash up functionality from multiple back-end systems, provides a way to shape APIs specifically for mobile development Mobile app developers can accelerate development with a set of predefine mobile services that can be consumed instantly – push, notification, offline synch, throttle, secure APIs – all built in to the platform. You saw Anna receive a text/push message from the mobile app - that is a built in mobile service into the platform so you can do out of the box without any coding. And the ability to analyze user behavior in a location enabled manner – which pages or products is Anna spending more time than others, where is she accessing the app, search history, and personalize the results even further – all of this is part of mobile analytics.
The reality is that most apps are not under IT control anymore. Some are on prem, some are in cloud and a variety of ways to integrate them have emerged. Anna wants an integrated experience, which means the back end systems – CRM, merchandizing, Supply Chain, all have to be integrated together, usually in real time but also in batch. And, as the administration experience is being simplified, Integration user experience MUST follow.
Cloud Platform for Integration. No coding Integration for Citizen Developers – Apps on cloud, social and mobile. No need to download a development tool and code in Java - Zero coding 2. Everything is moving to an API model – even our own internal development – we offer API management, throttling (for surges on black Friday), analytics to monitor their usage. All of these are first class citizens of our integration platform 3. We have re-imagined the user interface for Integration – it’s a far easier experience than the competition. Mapping one of the most complicated tasks we have made it far easier without any coding. We do this with our recommendation engine, which provides best practices for mapping. The recommendation service provides intelligent mapping recommendations by harvesting thousands of maps which have been previously submitted by oracle experts, partners and customers (IT experts) thereby improving accuracy and reducing the development time for integrations.
Integration is also morphing from data and processes to devices. Let’s take an example, in order to make sure that Anna gets her cardigan, the inventory must be accurate in the store. This requires real time tracking of the inventory as it moves through the supply chain. Customer Cloud or Service Cloud apps can talk to devices without worrying about technical nuances. Our Integration Cloud Service allows for not only the integration based requirements, but also the analysis of real time data streams. A truck door is open, is potential theft – alert someone.
The new requirements for analytics are all about empowering business users. Pushing decisions closer to the point of customer interaction. Regional managers and merchandise managers should be able to look across all relevant data -- campaign data, point-of-sale data and inventory data, for example -- and discover patterns and insights quickly, and act on them. And, do this without any need for IT help.
It will allow business users to go from raw data to actionable insights in just a matter of minutes. Mashu up multiple sources like internal POS data, inventory, IRI, loyalty programs etc. It’s designed for self service. And it’s 100% cloud, so need for hardware or software setup or upkeep. Let’s see how the Regional Manager for StyleRetail uses Oracle Cloud Platform to increase same store sales. Hari, come up and wow us with the Insight.
That was exciting. Now that I have the insight for increasing same store sales, am now tasked with the Operations aspect of things. How do I roll this insight out to store managers, perhaps some signage, some promotion material. Each store Manager and store associate must be engaged. The key word is engagement – modern consumers, employees and partners must be engaged.
REWORK THIS SECTION We live in a connected world and the way people communicate and make decisions is changing. The way organizations interact with each other is changing as well. While individuals expect and be able to work from anywhere unimpaired, they also expect to be able to connect with experts who can help them to get things done faster. No one wants to reinvent the wheel. In our retail example, if another store has found a way to drive more revenue, improve customer service, improve their store efficiency, why wouldn’t other stores benefit from that experience? We need to ensure that our customers, partners and employees are the most engaged with our companies. This can be a transformative force for businesses to drive new revenue, new ideas, innovation and process efficiencies
REWORK THIS SECTION We provide a platform for engagement that enables businesses to collaborate together on content anywhere from any device. To have real time conversations and get recommended experts they should engage with. To build mobile optimized and content rich sites and business communities so they can share, communicate and discuss important information relevant to their business relationship. We want to make it easier for businesses to improve their process efficiency, so they can build a self-service organization, reducing cost and overhead while improving responsiveness. So let’s look at what Business Engagement looks like at Style Retail. To do that, I am going to ask David Le Strat who leads product management for our Business Engagement Platform to show us.
In Summary, the Oracle Cloud Platform enables the complete lifecycle for building, integrating, analyzing and engaging within a secure and managed platform that is portable across on prem and cloud.
Again, we have a unique comprehensive solution to meet all of these needs from infrastructure to platform to software. Only Oracle offers a complete solution to meet the our customers need across all the dimensions of Cloud. Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service. We are one of the only Cloud vendors in the world that has chosen to compete in all three areas simultaneously. We’ve done this because we know that our customers need integrated solutions. They need a complete stack. Not just niche solutions in one area. Oracle Cloud continues to show strong adoption, supporting 70+ million users and more than 33 billion transactions each day. It runs on 54,000 devices and more than 700 petabytes of storage in 19 data centers around the world. Want to know one of the secrets to our success of how we can scale? We run our own platform and Infrastructure technology that we also make available to our customers. It's about a building an information platform upon which you can run you business, and that spans infrastructure, services, databases and applications. So next let’s look at one particular area in more detail around the platform…
Oracle offers the industries most completed integrated cloud platform, providing the broadest set of PaaS capabilities for our customers. In June this year Larry Ellison announced 24 new services as part of the Oracle Platform. They were across these important categories around Data Management, Application Development, Integration, Content and Collaboration, Business Analytics, Mobile, and Enterprise Management.
Each set of these capabilities offers multiple service offering. There is no other organization in the world that has such a complete Cloud Platform offering across each one of these major areas. Under each category of the Cloud Platform we have delivered the best-in-class individual services that can easily stand on their own or can be used together to work in multiple use cases in an integrated fashion. The Oracle Cloud Platform helps customers build new applications, extend existing ones, and easily move existing on-premises workloads to the cloud with no application changes. The services are designed to maximize end user experience and productivity; enable developers to manage and analyze data, rapidly develop, test and deploy applications; enable architects to quickly integrate across on-premises and cloud applications; and enable business users to drive rich business insights and enterprise collaboration. With the Oracle Cloud Platform, customers and partners are able to take advantage of the industry-leading Oracle middleware and database software that thousands of global organizations already use to run their own businesses, all delivered via cloud. The extensive level of automation that has been engineered into the Oracle Cloud, results in faster time-to-value, greater innovation, and lower cost for customers.
Our Platform as a Service offering is not just about the different services but at the end of the day it’s the multiple use cases we support that can differentiate us as well. Each of these core PaaS services can work in various key use cases, joined as solutions. For example, you can move Java and database workloads to the Cloud for dev/test use cases. You can combine services which support unstructured data and Hadoop for bringing a better picture of your big data through business analytics. And also we offer multiple integration styles that can work with on-premises and hybrid cloud environments. We can extend your SaaS apps. We can simplify and enable enterprise and mobility, especially for those enterprise legacy apps that have long tails, but we need to move them forward—bring them forward and mobilize them. Sharing in the cloud and Business Intelligence in the Cloud —we can support all these things, and as we engage with customers we need to really understand these use cases. Be that trusted advisor, identify those use cases and drive that cloud usage. Only Oracle offers the ability to drive more business value (again its about being greater than the sum of the parts)
Not only do we have one platform for every use case, we have one platform for every stakeholder. So we’ve got to understand who the stakeholders are, we’ve got to speak their language, from our traditional corporate IT and DBAs, to line of business to developers to business analysts to architects. And I’ll talk briefly about, you know, sort of what are those key points that each one of these folks care about.
So how much better are we actually at saving time and money? We can actually prove it out against AWS and traditional on-premise environments. We’re up to 4 TIMES Faster at provisioning We provide 5% of the number steps to provision and install and configure We do it without running a single command (eliminating manual error-prone user entry)… We only use simple easy to use configuration tools.
For developers it’s about building rich high performance apps. It’s about mobilizing the apps in the back end to support that. It’s about enriching, engaging and securing the apps as well.
For architects it’s about Sandbox/Dev Test. It’s about managing cloud, on-premise and mobile together. Again, that’s a big value add we have. You have all these different pieces. How on earth could I manage five different SaaS vendors, two different infrastructure vendors, two different platform as a service vendors. We can uniquely come in and bridge all of that and integrate it. Not only our own solutions but we have connectors to pull in third party as well. Get that strategic footprint. Single sign-on for all apps, monitoring and management.
For Line of business, there are universal truths we all care about. Secure and simplified sharing within our team, process automation, and again, those insights that we can get out of data. It couldn’t be more important.
And finally, for Business Analysts, these are specialized individuals who look across the organization when it comes to analytics. They need to build tools that deliver fresh business insights, rapid data discovery, and help make important correlations for all their data across Cloud, on-premises, mobile devices. These individuals need more from Cloud when it comes to shortening the time to build analytics dashboards, helping uncover patterns faster, collaborating on that analysis with LOB stakeholders, and finally, ensuring that information is connected across disparate data sources.
And then finally, again, Extending SaaS Apps. We talked about the install base we have around SaaS and how this is a unique opportunity for Oracle, to actually go in and use this platform to enrich, connect, mobilize our applications, to integrate ours as well as third party applications. To drive analytics across multiple applications to get to that unique insights into customer information for example. And I promise you, nobody else can go in there and tell this story.
We are very successful with our Infrastructure as a Service strategy. As a one-off, best in class together combined with our platform and software as a service, We’ve have the most compelling unified solution in the market. . We provide a complete secure, reliable infrastructure as a service and then we did one more thing to it, we made it lower cost than anyone else. We can provide a complete set of development / compute services as well as help companies migrate workloads flexibly between on-premises and public cloud. These are networked together to provide a complete package of solutions end-to-end. This is what Cloud was designed for. Our IaaS Services include Compute Services – Your own virtual machine instances, rapid self-service provisioning, and complete flexibility. Storage Services – Secure and scalable, object storage solution for managing and accessing data from any environment connected to the Internet. Networking Services – an efficient, secure and flexible way to connect users, applications and data in the Oracle Cloud.
In business, having options gives you flexibility to adapt to a constantly changing market and competitive landscape. It’s the same with Cloud. Oracle offers customers multiple options with a complete and modern cloud architecture. This choice is truly unique in the industry. Customers can deploy and manage their apps on their own private cloud, or can move it to the public cloud. When the make this movement – it’s a seamless migration because we’re using similar technologies (same standards, same products and unified management) on both sides. We also recognizing that no customer will have a single Cloud provider, Oracle has an open architecture that makes it easy to connect with existing applications on-premises and in the Cloud. As a result, customers can chose any combination of deployment model based on their business needs. Only Oracle offers customers the choice of both public and private cloud services. Any unlike our competitors, customers have the flexibility to change their deployment model –from private to public, or perhaps bring a public cloud application back in-house.
We have thousand’s of customers across multiple industry verticals to date. A small subset of them are highlighted here from across all global regions.
What happens if you would like to use our cloud services – Oracle Compute or PaaS services but deploy your production applications on premise? Perhaps because you’d like to retain an element of control perhaps you have data residency concerns. Today we are announcing a key component of Oracle’s mission to enable our customers to build applications and then seamlessly deploy them to Oracle Cloud or on Premise: That’s Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software 12c. Many vendors claim to run the same software stack on premise and in the Cloud – today oracle can truly say that we have delivered it! Oracle Cloud delivered in an Engineered Form on Premises. Let’s dig further into what’s in the box:
Firstly Oracle is delivering Oracle Compute – Storage and Compute on premise. That’s the same software that we have in the public cloud. This means that your applications and automation scripts that are developed in the public cloud are portable to on premise without code changes. Secondly, we are also packaging up our cloud-native PaaS services for on premises. Services such as java cloud service which enables you to develop applications in the cloud with full automation and integrated lifecycle management. You saw that a few minutes ago in Mike’s demonstration. The integration cloud service enables integration of on premise to on premise, on premise to cloud and cloud to cloud applications with an easy to use paaS services that significantly reduces the time and effort required to build and maintain integrations. Third, by bringing onboard our cloud-native PaaS services to on premise we are opening up the innovations that these applications bring to our packaged applications customers. For example if you have a PeopleSoft application and you want to be able to extend your application to mobile – you can do that with Mobile Cloud Service on Exalogic. No other vendor has the breadth of services in the cloud and on premise and the ability to truly offer portability across public and private. Talking about portability – how do you manage applications in the cloud and on premise? That’s Hybrid Cloud management….
